I just got the iPad mini!should I discharge it first?How many hours should I charge it for the first time?
The only thing that might be useful is - every once in a while (Monthly?) - let the Battery drain to near zero before charging it completely. Won't have much effect on the battery iself, but supposedly helps keep the battery meter calibrated. I'm pretty slack about this myself and have never had any battery meter issues (two iPad and as of December two iPhones). Otherwise I agree wholeheartedly with my UK collegue. Use it, charge it, have fun.

HT4060 Is it true you hve to let the IPad battery get real low before you charge it?
I have been told that if I charge the iPad when it is at 1/2 charge that the iPad will start to remember that it needs charged again. I was told the iPad will think it is a in a lower charge than it actually is. So if I charge it every day at 1/2 charge by the time it gets to 1/2 charge, it will slow down or may not work. This doesn't make any sense to me. If full, is 100% 50% 20% why would the iPad think it needed charged when it was at half charge. Does it have a mind. Does it cause it to think in that position if I charge it at 1/2 charge? Does it sinc in that spot? Hope you understand what I am trying to tell you. My son is good with the computer electronics but this has me stumped?

HT4060 How long should an iPad battery last?
When using my iPad continually I only seem to get approx 4 hrs use, is this about right?
The usefull life of an iPad battery is about 1000 full discharge/charge cycles, by Apple's standards (i.e. at 1000 cycles, if not abused, it should retain about 80% of its original capacity). But, a Lithium cell begins to loose capacity from the minute it is assembled at the factory. It will continue to loose capacity over time, whether used or not. So, if your iPad is a couple of years old and has had a lot of use (that is many discharge/charge cycles) then it will inherently last less and less on a charge as time goes by. Also, if it has sat unused for very long periods (several or many months) it will have degraded much faster than if used regularly.
As others have said, it also depends on your settings, and just what apps and things you normally run on it. -

Doesn't really matter. Just totally (<5%) discharge the battery once per month.

When I plugged my iPad 4 in to charge tonight at 2% I started watching a video but the battery level dropped to 1% then turned off. It was charging but it's like the video was eating too much power, more than the charge.
Is this normal? I'm a little concerned that the charger is not working. By the way I think I'm using my iPad 2 charger with the lightning cable plugged into the USB. Is this the problem maybe?
MattThe iPod & iPhone chargers are 5W. The iPad 1-3 chargers are 10W. The iPad 4 charger is 12W. You can use the iPad 4 charger on the other iDevices and they will charge faster. The older chargers can be used on the iPad 4, however, it will charge more slowly.

IPad battery draining quickly - tried everything, please help!?
Ive noticed recently that my iPad battery is rapidly draining. I've even noticed a 20% decrease just overnight while locked, which has NEVER happened. I've googled and research and tried everything possible. So does anyone have some options I might be missing?

My ipad battery is losing charge fast, how do I combat this?
I've recently updates to iOS 7.1 and I don't have any multi tasking animation (but I know why that is and I don't care), but my iPad 2 has been losing charge fast and not charging well. I don't have the apple charge cable that came with it I have another one from eBay, (it only charges well when it's turned off)

Ipad battery. Do i need to calibrate?
My 7 months old ipad 4 battery indicator is behaving very erratic. It is jump dropping and sometimes it just stuck at a percent. I haven't calibrated ipad even a single time since i bought it. Is calibrating bad? I heard its not good for the battery. Should i calibrate and how? Properly i mean. Thanks in advance.

Charging iPAD Battery from External Battery
Question:
When you plug in a Hypermac (third battery) battery to an iPad, does it charge the iPad, or does the iPad run from the external battery.
I have seen documentation that says, if the iPad battery is dead (less than 10%), then the external battery will charge the iPad to a "certain level", and then the iPad will run from the external battery.
Can anyone provide guidance and or Technical documentation regarding this ?

WilsonYes the iPad expects a constant voltage input of 5 Volt. The maximum charge current is 2.1 Ampere. The internal battery is charged by an intelligent charger, there is no direct connection between the external power and the iPad battery. Charging Lithium based batteries isn't trivial. Below a certain voltage the charge current has to be pretty low. When the battery is completely drained the charger will start with a lower rate. Once it reaches a certain voltage the full 2.1 Amp are charging the battery. As the internal battery is 'filling up' the voltage goes up. Once it reaches a certain level (4.2 or something around that, depending on temerature) the charger has to reduce the current (Ampere) gradually to make sure the internal battery's voltage never goes beyond that level. Letting it go higher is what makes those batteries explode.
All this is completely separate and independent of the external power supply. The iPad expects a constant 5 Volt and it will draw as much current as it needs or the supply allows. All external batteries that are sold as i-device chargers have a regulated output. The output voltage is constant (5 Volt) regardless of the battery level or voltage. The majority of these have a 500 mA or 1 A limit, only a few newer models are now equipped with regulators that are capable of 2 Amp. So only those will allow the iPad to charge as fast is it's possible. But again, the output is a regulated constant voltage.
I'm pretty sure the iPad would not even start charging if the external power is an unregulated source like a direct connection to a battery. -
