The mandatory story (scroll down if you're short on time or are like "TL;DR")
Over the past few weeks, I've posted on forums, listened to people on IRC, thought, thought some more, and tried to get an idea of the kind of the computer I need. And, after way too much stringing myself out over the whole issue, I've finally decided to give up.
You guys know Linux, in the sense that some of you use Linux for the reasons I want/need to run Linux for, and run the applications I want/need to run. So you're walking reviews of how responsive your hardware is under the stress you put it under (if you do at all), and in a prime position to explain to me what I need.
Up until now, I've used old hardware that's anywhere between "OUCH." and "*faints*" behind today's tech - I was using DOS in 1997, Win 3.1 in 2000, and Win98 in 2005-2006. Then things took a turn for the better (I believe in God so I know he had something in that change of events) and I got an old P4 with 512MB RAM. And that's when I was able to finally install XP - and when XP went to the "wow" I could never make my own to the "bleough, get this thing off me" it is, aka I "saw the light". And installed Linux. Arch Linux.
But I've finally outgrown this PC by several Saturn-sized margins, and need a new one. I've processed a lot of information, did quite a cram (that didn't even break a sweat although I thought it would, like this comic strip ) and learned about FSBs, RAM speed/timings and the like in less than a week, finally put my finger on the reason why my PC is so slow, learned about RAM size and so on... and started churning out keywords like a quad-core processor, 8GB RAM, etc... then it went to 16 cores, 32GB RAM, then 64GB RAM... and then things got really bad.
Everything reached a "capacity head" when I noticed that Intel are going to be releasing a 6-core chip as the last of their Penryn line, and mentioned this to a friend (who has a way bigger handle on hardware than I do, and taught me most of what I know), and shortly after other (related) topics were discussed he showed me this motherboard (he actually showed me this URL, the first URL the product page) that would work with it. That board has space for 192GB of RAM... enough said? Enough said. Ooh, right - it also has space for 4 of those 6-core Intel thingies. I don't think anyone can beat 24 cores. Well, AMD will be able to, with their 12-core chips they're releasing sometime... but then Intel will pwn them with their own 6-core Nehalems (which have HT, so 12-core) and we'll have 48 cores... and it will all continue.
Now, that server board is only $1195. I'd think that a few people could manage to do a bit of saving and scrimping to get a board like that, and I was figuring out how to do exactly that... until my friend told me the small issue that that board has 24 RAM slots, and a single 8GB stick of FBDIMM RAM is going to set me back a relatively manageable $1,100! $25k for RAM anybody?!
That board was off the list quickly. Very quickly
And my ideas... they just all ended. I like the idea of 24 cores a lot, because I'd be able to run 24 different Linux distros at once, or perhaps encode a DVD while playing a really intensive game through WINE through while being logged in to 10 Folding@Home accounts while load-testing 8 different Linux distros in VMs to see their performance differences while watching a Blu-Ray disc on another screen while keeping an eye on a full-motion animation I was developing using Blender while I was running Chrome over WINE in another window for the lulz. But... who's going to do that, except for a "look at me" video or two (that would quickly become one of the most viewed videos whereever it went )?
I mentioned the current hardware I have above to give you an idea of what I can, and can't, do right now - what I can't do includes animation. My PC maxes out watching youtube - or any video for that fact. It just makes the CPU hit 100%. And if you think that's because of Flash being absolute garbage on Linux, when I play stuff in mplayer, it typically hits 70% at the default window size. Yes, this is the bane of having a garbage GPU, one of the other things I need to upgrade. But case in point, not only can I not do animation, I can't do a lot of other things, and since pretty much most of my friends are online and not physical (how I like it), I'm not really able to try out other PCs from a "local" standpoint and see how they fare under differing circumstances. Plus, most of my friends' PCs are as bad as mine . If I look at that system from a possibility perspective, I see a system that can do whatever I want it to. Not mainly from a RAM perspective, but from a processing perspective - animation. And I want to get into animation, but I don't know where to start spec-wise. And I think that a server board with 192GB of RAM will be able to render animation really well. Scheduled animation, that is, not realtime animation, and area I want to get into also. Plus, that board doesn't have a lot of PCI slots...
But in case you haven't noticed, I don't know what I need in order to do what I want so I'm massively overcompensating to the extent that I'm breaking the bank.
The point
What I want is to be able to...
...throw any type of visual medium at my PC and expect it to respond in a nanosecond. Be that a high-definition movie from a BD-DVD or my hard disk, a complex realtime animation I just coded (or however you create that sort of thing), or both at the same time, I want it to play with graphics capability to spare for a (considerably) graphically complex game, even one running through WINE.
...run 3 30" displays off my system and expect them all to run at 50 or 70fps with all 12288000 pixels of the 3 screens updating at the same time.
...run a decent number of VMs at once, say 8 or 12.
...edit impossibly large images and still have a responsive system.
...keep an insane (1000+) number of tabs open in Firefox, indefinitely.
I think (read: hope) you're getting an idea of the kind of system I want here. Something that heads heavily into the field of realtime graphics management, but also something that functions just as well as an ordinary PC.
Some other points to note:
* I want to be able to leave my PC on at night without it chewing its way through the local power station's reserves.
* I want a decent amount of diskspace, say 5 or 10 TB. I currently have around 400GB of old files and triplicates of my duplicates, and I've not been able to sort it out. Ever. In 7 years. Meep? Meep. And for the ickies among you lot, FYI, none of that will be for pr0n. Just in case you missed the vague I-am-a-Christian hint in the paragraphs above (or went TL;DR at it).
* I don't need a quiet system. Yes, I'm not joking, I don't care. Provided it's not a jet engine.
* Watercooling is out, Zalman CPU coolers are in.
* Overclocking is out - well, major overclocking anyway. I've never overclocked before, and I'll likely wander into my BIOS one day and be like *read manual* *doublecheck manual* "okay, if I raise that by 1 MHz..."
* Nehalem - no thanks. It's version 1.0 (well it will be when it comes out), and Linux hasn't had a chance to take advantage of all the new stuff that is likely to surface about the new chip. No, that isn't a hint, it's a random realization I just had, and I don't work for and am not related to Intel or anyone who works there.
What I've been thinking is a good target:
* An 8-core system by way of a dual-socket board and two 4-core chips
* Two ATI Radeon 4870X2s for graphics
* 3 HP LP3095 10-bit 30" LCDs
* A G15 keyboard
* Both MX Air and MX Revolution mice (for different situations)
* A Lian-Li PC-V2110B case (yes, $500, but it looks awesome while not looking violent)
* Somewhere between 8 and 64GB of RAM, depending on how much you think I need.
Price isn't really an issue here; I'm interested in knowing what I need for a working system - this is my first big upgrade and big upgrades don't cost $1. Or ¥1. Or €1.
So... that's all I know for sure. Everything else is "?!?!?!?!... *dies*". And I've given up trying to respawn and think about it anymore.

First of all, the current ATI drivers don't support multiple GPUs, so at the moment even a single 4870X2 would be only a 'normal' 4870 (which is quite a speed beast already). GFX drivers evolve rapidly, so things might look different next month, but when it comes to Linux and hardware there's one Golden Rule: stay away from the newest stuff and wait for proper support to get coded.
I also wonder what power supply could possibly cope with the differences between idle and full load; that's way beyond 400W. But then, I'm one of those "quiet&green" types where >100W idle is already a bit much.
I kind of understand that you want to get it done and not worry about hardware for the next 10 years or so, but that's simply not how the hardware world works and never did. At least not for the average consumer. -
I cannot swipe up on my iPad to get to control centre. I want to mirror to Apple TV. this is the most frsutrating thing. No wonder Microsift rules
Is notification center showing up when you swipe down ?
Check in your settings if control center is checked :
Settings > control center > check both "lock screen" and "access within apps"
gently swipe up beginning outside the screen, just a few inches up (you don't need to swipe up to the top of the screen.
if detected the airplay option will appear in the control center. -
Im using Itunes version 10.6.3 to try to restore my Ipad. Check for updates tells me this is the most recent verion, but its also telling my I cant restore my Ipad because its doesnt have the software available yet.

my ipod nano 7th generation....works fine as long as it's on the docking station. when off the station, the display goes dark after a few seconds. it's fully charged. please help. this is the heartbeat of my business. thanks
In the worst case, it's still under warranty (all 7th gen nanos are still under one year from purchase).
So, you disconnect it from power, and it almost immediately goes dead? You can try a Restore... but it doesn't sound like the type of problem a Restore will fix.
You should probably have it looked by Apple Tech Support. If there's an Apple Store nearby, you can take it to the store's Genius Bar. To avoid waiting, you can make a reservation at the store's web page

I have an old IMac with 10.4.11 & the most uptodate Itunes it allows me to download (this isnt the most uptodate as u'd imagine) I now have new Iphone 5 i want to add my itunes songs etc to but when i plug it in it doesnt register the device. Any advice?

Yep, skype has become one of the most useless things on the internet,,,,, well the ACTUALL skype is quite fine, it's just the "help" pages are simply designed to go round in circles so the "team" helping don't ever have to,,,,,,,,,, do anything, answer other humans (we assume they in fact are human), actually reveal their intelect(s) and or interact with the REAL WORLD in any way whatsoever, they are however easy to spot,,,,,,,,,,,,, they're the ones sitting prone rocking back & forth chanting on the floor of the mall RIGHT NEXT TO THE GUN SHOP,,,,,,,,,,,, I'd advise quietly returning to your car, train or taxi and dialing 911 (or appropriate to your country) other wise the good news is there are now MANY other options (fortunately) for free video calling etc, dear old Google.com has truck loads for your convenience, personaly I have 3 (yes a whole three) contacts on skype now, the rest of my 100+ (Im a small player I know) have all scattered round the MANY other options that have REAL help pages, that (gasp) DO answer questions (many in REAL TIME with live human operators) this has been hugely convenient and altogether quite pleasant to have, hope that helps. -
Help me get the most of my N900

I've slowly grown to like my N900 more and more over the months I've had it. I wish I had more time and know how to get creative on it, but for now there a few quirks that prevent me from getting the most out it.
1. media player
Is there any media player that will allow you to go from shuffle to the album that the song is from, like you can in ipod? I basically need inspiration from shuffle to decide what to listen to and miss it on my n900. Going back to find it manually is too laborious. Just downloaded instinctive and it doesnt seem to handle that. Also in portrait only which is no good for me!
2. google search
If I do a search from the address bar, it nearly always gives me results from google.fr. Dunno why this could be.
3. Sygic Mobile Maps
I love Sygic. I often use it with music running at the same time. I got the update (including full screen) before I reflashed and then updated to latest maemo. I dunno how to get the update again, but when I do I really need to know how to minimise and get to other programs by only using the screen. This didnt seem to be possible with full screen and changing music while using maps on my bike is pretty lethal otherwise!
Also wondering how to not have sygic sound files in my media player. I dont really need to be given random directions in mandarin chinese while I'm trying to navigate the countryside. Not that I'm actually gonna understand it !
4. Lastly as an honorary angry bird, I demand more levels immediately!

PIf you don't want the sound to be added into your media player then
you'll have to change the path of /home/user/MyDocs/Res to /home/user/MyDocs/Private/Res
i.e. Create a folder called Private in MyDocs and move Res into it.
after Moved Res folder to Private Folder.
Edit the file MyDocs/Drive/Maemo/setting.ini . . [Settings] showSafetyMsg=false ;DPI=96 DPI=220 ;IconSize=3 processing=fribidi PositionFiltering=true colorMode=RGB565 showSafetyMsg=true ResourcePath=/../../Private/Res
Done now there won't be any .wav file from sygic in your media player anymore.

As for the problem, to go back to the task manager while u r using sygic in full screen mode, install the app CAMKEYD from the app manager, and itll enable u to just push the camera button halfway and that'll bring up the task manager or u can use the other option by using keyboard shortcuts, i dont like to keep on opening my keyboard again and again,

This is my basic query, but it pulls back multiple records for the given part/serial number combo. How can I re-write this? Thanks

I'm going through **** here. Have a client who needs a spanish version of their corporate presentation. Got the Spanish keyboard up. Each and every time I need to use an accent above a letter...FCP X shuts down. What is going on with this system? The most feckless piece of soffware ever!! Ready to pull out the old tower G4 and cut on the FCP 7...
Okay will do...using the Canadian English Version...
Also, as you well know in Spanish, the "accent" does "slice" either way. Over vowels, such as "a" and "o"...

Is this machine the most annoying PC EVER?
is there any way that I can speed up my internet performance? I am so sick of watching that stupid little circle spin that I'm ready to buy a mac and just be done with it all.
What are the tweaks that will smooth out how this thing operates? Does anyone else see the same issue? Blame it on Vista if you want, but I have another vista box that does not have this problem.
Why is it that when I click a link that the little circle needs to present itself and spin for a few seconds before it decides to go to a link?
ALSO, what does that stupid circle continue to recycle every few seconds?? I JUST DONT GET IT?!!!!
By the way, I do not have McAffee.... Using Trend; which, all my other machines use as well.
What can I do??

It's your Internet - it may be slow or you may have problems with your router or you've launched torrents/eMule in backgrond. Many things can cause such behaviour but none of them can be adressed Lenovo or Vista.
Plese try using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 instead of IE that is buggy. Also test your speed and post it here - that'll help to resolve the case.

The pop-up window states Error: Syntax error. This happens on almost every page that I load. It's also happening on my windows xp laptop... and it seems that it has something to do with the most recent Microsoft updates that just went through.

i have been using skype for five years and still have not figured out why it is so difficult to do business with these maniacs in luxemburg . i do not even know where luxemburg is . every month they attempt to charge my credit card $2.99 for the cost of a north american subscription . every month my bank blocks the charge because it came from europe . i have to have pre approval for all charges that originate outside of the usa . this is a bank policy which is meant to protect me from charges that look unusual . then skype -- without even contacting me first -- immediately cancels my subscription . i never know the exact date that skype will attempt to charge my account $2.99 . so i am never able to inform my bank when to permit a charge from luxemburg to go through my account . also it has never been clear to me whether or not i am supposed to pay $30.00 for my skype number each year . why doesn't skype make it more clear that i am supposed to pay for my skype number ? are they embarrassed that it cost $30.00 to buy a personal skype number on top of the $30 plus dollars that i pay for the subscription ? this would mean that skype is actually $60.00 or more per year . why doesn't skype just tell their customers that instead of pretending that everything is free ? why is there absolutely no way to directly communcate with anybody at skype and find out what i am supposed to pay ? skype is a world wide communications company that refuses to communicate with their own customers and keeps cutting their customers' phone off even when the customer has a subscription or paid personal skype number . can't they get somebody in the middle of the usa to answer the **bleep** phone !??shedowa wrote:

I haven't forgotten my log in name or my password. I'm being told by the blue skype log in page that "We can't open skype. You are already signed in on this computer. Please sign out and try again." Try to reset all Skype settings.
Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.
If you are on the latest Skype 6.5/6.6/6.7/6.9/6.10/6.11/6.13/6.14 version, then do also this:
Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.
Restart Skype.
N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder. -
Why have you removed the bookmarks side panel button? This is THE most important feature of firefox.
Since last update of firefox, the button to open the side bar bookmarks have been removed (ctrl+B) equivalent.
I don't want to do a ctrl+B command in a graphical interface that I use so often. There is no good enough extension for that task.
This is THE reason I used firefox since the begining.
I have gazillions of bookmarks cleanly ordered since YEARS of web browsing. This is the way I use internet. If I have a project I create a folder and I put every interesting links I want to remember in it. There is no way to do that in a dropdown menu which close at every click.
I know people who use chrome and keep up to 60 tab open just to remember what they need.
I just spent half a day searching for proper extension in chrome and opera.
I feel so frustrated and powerless in front of browser developpement, I have to tell it. I would gladly pay 20$ per year to keep that function there, a single button sending ctrl+B command, so simple and already coded.
Firefox was my only browser for years, I leave you with that. The new software update - iOS 7.0.2 is killing the battery in my iPad. I have searched online and taken the recommended measures to decrease battery use, but within hours my iPad is completely dead. It would take days to kill the battery before this update. I am very frustrated. Can I undo this update???
This typically happens when some apps on the phone were interrupted by the upgrade. When it comes back up the app tries to resume and can not. You have to find and kill that app(s).
Do you have an Exchange account?
That is usually the culprit. Go into Settings and turn off all of the toggles for the Exchange account. Then reset the phone (hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears). When the phone powers back on, turn the toggles back on.
Do the same for all mail accounts if you don't have Exchange or that doesn't resolve the issue.
If it is not Exchange/Mail then it could be another app(s).
With iOS 7 you can control what apps run in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This will list all of the apps that can run in background. Turn them all off and restart. If this fixes the problem turn on a few at a time until you find the one causing the trouble.
