HT4061 Ipad won't open - message iCloud Backup - This product hasn't been backed up in 2 weeks.  Backups happen .... etc

Baffled by the message on screen as I have not tried to back up the machine.  How do I do anything when I am unable to go beyond this message?  I am on a friends laptop trying to make some sense of what has happened.  I did get an email some time ago about verifying my id but have not had time to look at this and now can't find it.  I am completely stuck - can anyone help?
