Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.

See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 to restore the phone using Recovery Mode. You will lose all content on the phone. This is the only way to bypass the lock screen if you don't have the last computer the phone was synced to.

My iphone is stuck in recovery mode and itunes will not recognize my phone. I've tried pretty much every trick i can and i still do not know what to do. Someone please help me

I've done all of these, even trying a different USB port, and still, nothing. This is really confusing. Windows 8.1 said something to do with USB malfunction or something and nothing works. I need to restore my iPhone quickly and nothing has happened. My cable is not genuine Apple product. iTunes makes the noise that it makes when I connect the device, but it doesn't say 'iPhone is in recovery mode' or even say 'iPhone' in the corner. I am really fed up and would really appreciate a response.
    Thanks,
    Nathan.

    Hey Yan Heng,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like your iOS device is not recognized in iTunes for Windows, while in recovery mode. The following resource may help to resolve your issue. While you should run through each step, the specific information related to your symptom is outlined in Step 5 (If the device is not recognized while in Recovery Mode).

If so, then it's a hardware problem. Make an appointment at the genius bar and get it replaced. Based on the "it was water damaged", I think it's a safe bet that it's toast.

  • IPad Air stuck in recovery mode!

Tried to update my iPad Air to iOS 8 this afternoon. Plugged into my brand new Macbook Air (about one month old), backed up to iTunes. Clicked to begin the update and install, left the room.
Came back to find the iPad Air in recovery mode (iTunes logo and lightning cable on the screen). iTunes reporting that it has detected an iPad in recovery mode and needs to restore. Since I have a backup already, I go ahead and click on Restore iPad, and then Restore and Update (my only option besides Cancel).
The progress window gets all the way to "Restoring iPad Software" and the progress bar starts to climb, but then I get the error message:
"The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)."
I've repeated this process many times, usually the error occurs right at the beginning of the progress bar, but one time it almost got to the end before giving me the error message.
I read up on Error 9 and it says it may be something amiss with my security software. I have not installed any antivirus or firewall software. My firewall is off and always has been. Like I said, this is a pretty new Macbook Air, I've installed very few programs on it (Crashplan, Dropbox, Google Drive, Lightroom).
Any thoughts on what to do? It's completely frustrating. My iPad's been bricked. ;(

  • I downloaded 5 to my itunes.  When I tried to update my iPad 2 it extracted the informaion and then when it tried to restore the iPad, I got an error message saying that my iPad malfunctioned, it went into recovery mode, and it would not restore.

When I downloaded (on PC) the new 5 it crashed my iPad 2. I worked for two days to get it to stop the malfuction, went to the apple store for four hours, iPad crashed again, got a new one, new iPad crashed when I tried to restore my back up.  Down loaded iTunes to an employees computer, I was able to restore iPad to factory settings but my itunes account is on my office computer and now I am afraid to plug it into my computer.  I did delete the back up as maybe that is currupt and making it crash???  Any body know about this?

This is Linda again.  The new iPad actually as not restored on my employees computer. I thought it was working.  Message said the device is in recovery mode and can not be restored.  I have been at the Apple store for a total of 6 hours and on the phone with support for at least 4 hours.  And now the replacement has crashed???  Has this happened to any one else?

  • IPad 2 went in Recovery Mode and I don't want to lose my data

    Well, hello.
I have a big problem with my iPad2. From the begining: I wanted to update the iOS to 7.1.2. The progress bar appeared and I left it like that. When I returned, it showed me that I have to connect the device to iTunes. When I did this, it said that I have to restore it. The big problem is that I don't have any back-up of my iPad. I had, but my old laptop broke and I can't open it anymore. So I got a new laptop (Windows 8) and never connected the iPad to it, only now, when it is in Recovery Mode and... I tried to hold the Home+Wake up button both pressed in the same time, but still no change: the Apple logo appears only for a few seconds and it goes back to the Recovery Mode screen. I also downloaded TinyUmbrella from here: http://tinyumbrella.en.lo4d.com/ but nothing happened (it appeared something like TinyUmbrella: Verifying libraries, reticualting something). I also contacted the service in my country, but they said that nothing can be done, I have to restore it and, by this, erase all the data on it. Please, is there any way in which I can save the data? I'm more than desparate

Yes, I know... I discovered now that I have saved the photos I wanted from it long time ago (for the same reasons, i didn't wanted to lose them). So I'm kind of saved. Also it has been like crap because the laptop where I had my backups is as dead as can be. That was the moment when I panicked. From now on... I'll back-up it everyday. Thank you a lot!

  • My iPad is stuck in recovery mode, and wont stay turned off in order to use redsnow.

Alright so my iPad is stuck in recovery mode. I did some research and arrived at redsnow to fix the problem. In order to use redsnow's recovery fix option I have to power down my iPad. When I hold the sleep button though, no "slide to power off" appears, the screen just goes black then reboots into recovery mode 3 or 4 seconds later. Restarting it via holding the sleep and home buttons doesn't do anything. How do I get it to stay powered down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I may have used the wrong terminology. My iPad screen looks identical to the picture shown in the link, which is what I reffered to as Recovery Mode. I was looking for a way to return to normal functionality, without having to restore my iPad. I have never backed up this iPad and would prefer not to lose any information on it. If this is impossible then I will just restore it and carry on.
My main issue with restoring it is that I don't want to lose the pictures on it. If the restore doesn't erase the pictures, then I apologize for wasting your time and will be restoring it immediatly. However if I will lose the pictures than I'd prefer any other method of exiting this screen.
