I'm sure you must be eager to get your iPhone back in safe to be able to continue using it's wonderful apps.
Since you didn't back it up on your computer, you maybe be able to lose your things on your iPhone.
But, if you're using iOS 5, maybe you can restore your purchases on iCloud.
Even your contacts, Calendar and more...
If you purchased music you can redownloaded it if no cost.
Also if you started backup in the cloud you'll be able to get everything back, since you let your iPhone charging and WiFi was on, by that way your iOS will do the back up automaticly per day, this way, you'll never lose anything
If you didn't did any of this things, probably you'll lose the data from your iPhone.
But if you start it over again, be sure to activate the backup daily, to never again lose your apps and music.

If you have performed a sync with the device since you restored this old backup, then don't bother looking for another backup. iTunes writes over the last backup each time you sync. If you were handling contacts in iCloud, you would find them by logging into iCloud. Or you can check settings and iCloud and see if the button it on for Contacts. Otherwise it might have been on the computer, if you had a program that syncs with iTunes and handles contacts, depending on the computer system you use. If Windows, it would be Windows Contacts or Outlook. If a Mac, there is a Mac Address book as well.

If you are using the computer that you normally sync with, it should sync without entering the passcode. However, if this is not the computer you normally sync with, you cannot get past the passcode, it has to be entered.

If there is a passcode on your iPhone, which you don't know, there is no way around it. You'll have to restore factory settings. The passport is meant to protect sensitive data, and that is, what it does.

HT4061 i phone stuck in recovery mode

I upgraded to iOS 6 this morning and my phone is now stuck with the apple on the screen?

Nice call on the server comment and the support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error3014). I checked out the latter before but followed the steps as it said. Here's what happened for me:
1) gs.apple.com line was not found/present when I entered the Terminal App as it directed
2) I did delete the NetworkInterfaces.plst file from /Library/Preferences/SystemsConfiguration and restarted my MBP. (NOTE: The support page said I'd lose internet connectivity but this wasn't disrupted on my machine)
3) Attempted to restore my iPhone 5 but it Failed again, now the error code went from 3014 back to -1.
4) Rebooted my iPhone for sh**s and giggles even though it was in Recovery Mode
5) Attempted to restore the phone again and it was a Success!! It's in the process of transferring the backup data now.

You can't currently transfer purchases/downloads from one account to another account.

Have you got the ibooks already on your computer and/or on a backup so that you can sync them to your new iPhone ? If not then have you bought anything on your new account yet - could you go back to just using the old account ?

If I receive an email with a photo(s) attached, I can view it in the body of the email which is very nice. But I cannot figure out how to save the attached photo onto the phone.

There is no direct way.
However, did it not also go to your "home computer?"
Import it to iPhoto which you can sync to the iPhone.

The same way the photos were transferred from your computer, via the iTunes sync process.
Deselect sync photos under the photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by sink to remove all.
