HT4072 can't play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) with 5.1 audio tracks

I have two Macs, one with a mini-optical out and no audio through its mini-displayport, and the other that supports digital audio out through its mini-displayport. On either of my Macs, how can I play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) in 5.1 using Quicktime or iTunes or VLC? I've heard I need Perian. Is this true? If so, how do I configure it on either machine?
Note that when I connect the computer that supports audio through the mini-displayport to my receiver, my home theater receiver detects a PCM audio connection, but the audio I get out of my speakers is still stereo.
Both computers are running Snow Leopard. I haven't had the need to upgrade to Lion yet, but if the answer is that I need Lion do do this, I'd spend the $29.
Thanks for the help!

This just happened for the first time with an .mkv file I was trying to play. It started fine but then after selecting a menu option in smplayer the video disappeared. It didn't go black, the player just stopped presenting the video. In other words the player switched to audio playback mode only, the window was unable to go into fullscreen or be resized. Smplayer still works with other HD files. Deleting the config directory fixes the problem until I select a menu option, such as, setting the audio to 5.1, then the video portion disappears again.
Does anyone know what is going on here or have any ideas on how to fix this issue?
Thanks for any help provided.
that's because now mplayer they switch to libavformat demuxer for mkv and ogg and i think is a bug in smplayer because is making some configuration for files in file_settings in which is sets demuxer & co. this switch is confusing smplayer and it should be reported upstream
p.s if you actually select demuxer from smplayer to mkv it would work perfectly

  • Can't Play Video Files in Lightroom 4

I can import video files (.mov) into Lightroom 4 but I can't play them. I can play them in Photoshop CS6 Beta. The Control Bar with the "Play" icon doesn't show  and the space bar does nothing.

I've tried to restore all the settings, but it didn't work. Does anybody have any other solutions for this problem?

  • I can't play video files...PLEASE HELP!!!

I was changing the settings, for what..I don't know. But now I can't play any video files. I can store them and download them and play them back on my computer, but I can't access them on my BB.
Will someone please let me know what the original factory settings are for where to store video files?
I'm assuming that I am storing them in the wrong place, so now I can't access them.
I have turned off MTP and MSMS and this does not help either way.
I need to know what is the original file to store video files.

    Hi Attila74,
What kind of video? Format? Codec needed? ... without that info is quite difficult to help you but I would bet you would need some additional codecs or simply try it with VLC.

  • Can't play video files - max CPU

I have an out-of the box MacBook with leopard - and I simply had to use Force quit about a thousand times.
    The problem:
    When I try to...
    - import (iPhoto)
    - play (Quicktime)
    - Preview
    - open a folder in which there is...
... a video file shot with my Samsung Digimax A5 camera, the application (finder, quicktime player or iphoto) just maximizes the cpu usage, and hangs. And I have to close it by force quit.
However, the files are not corrupted, VLC Player plays them without problem, and also provides the following codec information:
    FLUX0 (video)
    Codec: MJPG
    Res.: 640x480
    30 fps
    FLUX1 (audio)
    Codec: MLAW
    Channels: 1
    Freq: 8000hz
    Bits per sample: 8
    64kbit/s
(maybe I translated some properties wrong, I use french Os X)
Since nearly every action (spotlight search, opening iphoto, trying to import files to the iphoto library, etc.) encounters with a file like this, and hangs the application, this really makes my life ****.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can I play MIDI files on a Disklavier with iTunes?

I have the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver installed on my PowerMac G4 which I have been using to play piano MIDI files on my Yamaha Disklavier using the shareare program QMidi.
Is it possible to play these MIDI files through the MIDI-USB connection to my Disklavier using iTunes?
Right now iTunes appears to play these files with the Quicktime music synthesizer and the synthesized piano plays through the speakers. If this is the case, can the Quicktime plug-in be configured to pass the MIDI data to the Yamaha MIDI-USB driver rather than using the synthesizer?

  • How to edit video files (mp4, avi ...) meta data (Title, author ...) ?

    Hello all,
After transcoding a DVD into MP4 using Avidemux I would like to change the video meta data title so that it looks great when listed into my favorite portable video reader.
It seems Avidemux uses the file name as title, but do not provide any way to change it afterwards. I also know how to set the title using ffmpeg, but I do not want to re-encode the video each time I want to do that !
Does anybody know about a simple tool (command line or gui) to change MP4 and other video formats meta data such the movie title ?
Thank you very much for sharing your experience !
    Cheers,
    Chicha.

Easytag works fine for MP4 files, but doesn't consider even showing AVI files in its list. I ended up using FFmpeg for similar purposes.
From what I've seen around, it seems to have supported command line arguments like "-title" or "-comment". My version (22511-1) does no like them. It however supports a generic "-metadata" argument.
    ffmpeg -metadata title="TITLE" -metadata artist="ARTIST" -metadata date=DATE -metadata genre="GENRE" -metadata comment="COMMENT" -acodec copy -vcodec copy -i old.avi new.avi
The list of metadata names FFmpeg supported at some point in time (r20910, 2009-12-21) can be found here [0].
For some reason, my vlc (1.0.5-5) doesn't show them in the media information, but mplayer does.
    [0] http://multimedia.cx/eggs/supplying-ffm … -metadata/
FFmpeg's metadata handling is in flux. If one builds an unpatched version from subversion right now, the metadata doesn't line up properly in some cases. This may be why VLC isn't seeing the data. It's for sure why MPD from Git is having trouble right now. The patch below fixes a lot of it. I added a comment on a bug report that I filed with FFmpeg previously to try to get them to commit it:

  • How can I access video file from sd card on ipad2?

How can I access video file from sd card on ipad2?

Your iPad 2 will see the video if:
It's in a DCIM folder on the top level of the card (which is how most cameras do it)
It's name is 8 characters, no more, no less (CKDI9483 for example)
It's a format that the iPad will play
I've made mp4's of things, folderized them right and named them 'right' and can transfer them to my iPad, so you can use a computer to make the files conform to what the iPad will see.

  • Can't play .mov files in Xine

    Hi
I am pretty new to Arch but it is great so far.  I am running vanilla KDE4 with Xine as the Phonon backend.  One problem I'm having is that I can't play .mov files.  Other stuff like .wmv and .avi play ok.  I also have the codecs package installed.
For example, no luck with this file
    http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/Cros … llUps1.mov
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums DeKay.
This isn't going to help, but I can confirm this using Xine 1.2 (dev) and almost a pure FFmpeg backend. ffplay and Mplayer can both play this file properly, so it's without a doubt a Xine problem. I ran a gdb trace on it and didn't really get anything to report upstream either.

  • Toshiba 40SL733g - How to play video files from USB flash memory

When I plug my USB flash memory in USB port, Media Player menu shows up with two options : Photos and Settings.
How do I make my TV recognize and play video files from USB flash memory?
    Flash is on FAT32.
I have tried to play avi, mp4 and mkv files but nothing happens. It looks like flash is empty.
Could you please help me solve this problem.
    Thanks!

bzunic, have you updated the firmware for your model?.
With my own set, (32RL900A), the instruction manual said that certain buttons on the remote control were "unused", however, after the first firmware update, the previously "unused" buttons were used, (In our case, Time Shift, Record, and so on).
The reason I talk about this is, these features became available after a firmware upgrade, and were not mentioned in the user manual, in our case, and a later download of the instruction manual for our model actually gave the instructions for the use of these features, which were shown as "not available", in the original instruction manual supplied with the TV, but became available after the firmware upgrade.
Let us know how it all works out ............

  • How can we make quick time player play all formats like AVI, MKV, MPEG etc?

How can we make quick time player play all formats like AVI, MKV, MPEG etc?

QuickTime supports many different file types & codecs, but not all.   In many cases you can lookup, download & install specific codecs if you need them.
    The following may be helpful:
    Perian
    QuickTime: About Playing AVI Files
QuickTime X: Playback of MPEG2 video
QuickTime 7.6.6  (you may need this if QT X won't play old videos)
QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component (for QT 7.x)
    Windows Media Components for QuickTime
