HT4085 ipad 2 ios 7 screen rotation - stocked in portrait

I have tried all the suggestions found in here and even resetting the iPad via iTunes but the screen still won't rotate to landscape. Anyone out there who have THE solution?

ios 7 introduced a new setting that has to do with the new animations of the Ipad and it affects the Ipads rotaion ability.
Go to-
     -Settings>General>Accessibility>Reduce Motion (turn it on)
-Then shut down the ipad and reboot it.

  • IOS 8 Rotation Stuck in Portrait

There's some kind of bug in iOS8 that is getting devices stuck in portrait mode; I noticed both my wife's iPhone 5s and my 6 were stuck in portrait orientation this evening, and nothing short of a complete reboot would fix the problem and restore normal auto-rotation. (I tried toggling the rotation lock, the reduce motion setting, sleep and wake, and manually closing all open apps.) I found a couple of other threads here complaining about what sounds like the same problem on iPads.
The only thing that had been done on both of them since the last reboot (which was less than 12 hours earlier) was run Epic Zen Garden, so I'm suspecting either Metal-intensive apps or apps that have a fixed orientation, but when I tried firing that up again it alone didn't seem to be enough to get the OS stuck again.
    I'm wondering if:
    a)  Anybody has figured out what, if anything specific, is triggering this.
    b)  If there's a workaround faster than rebooting the phone.
    c)  If it's already on Apple's bug tracker (I'm not a dev).
If it's not a listed bug yet, figuring out more specifically what is triggering it would let someone file it properly; "rotation lock sometimes gets stuck" is a shoddy bug report when it comes to trying to reproduce it.  And it's a pretty severe usability bug, so I'd hope it'd make a priority list once it does get filed.

    Same here. Just noticed it.
Convinced it's not hardware as issue goes away.
I have successfully fixed the issue with a reboot but also by launching the maps or compass apps.
By doing this it seems to 'reset' and then work in other apps such as BBC News. Seems to happen quite often though nothing concrete on what causes it.
Think it may be when using an app that senses rotation, and using this app for a long while in one orientation.  iOS seems to the forget rotate later.  Apps that don't rotate don't seem the cause the problem.
I trust Apple are likely to fix this in 8.1 ?

  • HT4085 iPad 2 stopped rotating

Hi - my wife's iPad 2 has stopped rotating. I've tried the advice on other posts (from King Penguin, that worked for others) about the lock button, (it's not locked, but I can get the padlock icon to appear, so switching on/off is still theoretically possible). I've checked the home screen icon, and have performed a reset, and it's still stuck in portrait mode. Any more suggestions please?
    Thanks
    Steve

Hi - thanks both, but I've done those already before posting.
Another post I saw suggested it could be a rogue app that's locked it. Given the kids play on my wife's iPad, then it is possible they've downloaded something, but if that's the case, I'm not sure where to start. I could also spend a lot of time wiping the iPad, and reloading app by app and still find it isn't resolved ... Which is why I'm asking the iPad loving community for help before taking that route!
(It's been great so far ... But I am stumped by this one.)
Btw - has anyone heard of this being down to a hardware failure? Presumably it's a possible cause? But all the posts I've seen so far suggest otherwise.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • TS3274 Screen Rotation not Working or Rotating by Itself

My iPad does not rotate (landscape to portrait and visa versa) when I rotate the screen?

The side switch is the key.  Depending on your settings, it may affect the mute or it may affect the rotation lock.  This support article from Apple provides detail.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
In case you're wondering, here is the history.  Originally, the mechanical switch affected only the rotation lock and the mute was a software switch elsewhere.  In IOS-3, it was changed to be the mute switch and the rotation lock became a software switch.  This was done to ensure consistency among IOS devices.  Unfortunately, a large quantity of users complained loudly, alleging that they turned the rotation lock on and off several times every hour and the convenience of the mechanical switch is essential.  In IOS-4, Apple bowed to the whiners and made the switch function selectable and now we're stuck with a mess.
There have been some problems accessing pages on the Apple web site.  If the hyperlink gives you a "We're sorry" message, try again.

Yes, you can. You can configure the Side Switch (above the volume button) either as Mute switch or Rotation lock.
Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: choose what you like the Side Switch to function as.

When you reset to factory settings, did you restore as new or did you restore from a backup? If you restored from a backup, you could try restoring as new and don't use the backup. If you do that, you will lose all of your data, but you can download or sync all of your content back to the iPad.
You could also try resetting all settings before your restore as new. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. You will have to re enter all device settings again.
And of course the possibility does exist that the iPad has developed a hardware problem that is causing the rotation issue and only a visit to an Apple Store could determine that for sure.

  • IOS 8.1.2 Ipad mini 2 Laging and slower screen rotation

I have just updated my brand new iPad mini 2 with IOS 8.1.2 and the screen rotation became slower ,at the lock screen it became more  obvious it takes 1-5 seconds to rotate and the "slide to unlock" slider animation is freezing and lagging ,at the application screen takes 1-3 seconds ,the problem goes when I restart the device ,How Can I solve this problem .

    Hi there farahatology,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into general performance issues with your iPad mini. One thing you may want to try, to rule out software issues, is restoring your iPad to factory settings as shown in the article linked below.

  • How do I fix my iPad screen rotation since the iOS 7 upgrade?

How do I fix my iPad screen rotation since the iOS 7 upgrade?
Since the upgrade, my screen orientation does not change based on the iPad's current position. It is often upside-down?
Anyone else have a similar issue? If no, how did you fix it?

  • I have installed iOs8 on iPad and the home screen is locked on portrait yet all have rotate

After installing ios8, the home screen is locked out in portrait mode yet all the apps rotate to landscape.. what's up?

If there isn't a padlock icon at the top right of the iPad's screen then have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • IPad iOS 7 screen rotation

Ever since the ios7 update the screen rotation on my iPad has stopped working. Any tips or help?

Are you sure that the screen isn't locked? You do not see the padlock icon in the upper right corner?
If the screen isn't locked, reboot the iPad. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • After updating to iOS 8.3, seem like the wifi signal got worst. The screen rotation is still as bad

sseem like the updates which were pushed didn't do any much hel, the wifi signal was even weaker than before, at times I will be totally disconnected from my home wifi.
And the screen rotation... i don't see any difference to it.

Mine won't even rotate now. So I have not scientific calculator. Apple support recommends backup and restore.

iOS software used to be so bullet proof, but iOS 8 is a dog. It's like working with windows. I wish I could downgrade. My wife's phone is at iOS 6 and I'm leaving it there. it works better than mine.

    Hi ismailsurve,
There are a few things to check if your screen isn't rotating correctly.

  • My ipad doesn't rotate to portrait mode when reading email why?

I have set up my mail but my ipad does not rotate to portrait

My ipad rotates everywhere else but when mail mode.  I can only view mail on landscape, two columns, mail boxes to the left and mail content to the right.  When I flip the pad to portrait it remains the same way and it does not flip as it is supposed to.  No, I do not have the lock button set to lock screen but to mute.  Any ideas?

  • After upgrade to IOS 4 screen rotation doesn't work.

I just upgraded my iPhone 3Gs to IOS 4 and the screen doesn't rotate with any apps when I turn the iphone 90 degrees to the horizontal. Any fixes anyone knows of? Thanks

    Update on my particular issue:
When I open an app that responds to screen rotation (photos, safari), hold my phone on its side and then shake up down very hard, then the screen will rotate. If I tip it back up into portrait orientation the screen still doesn't rotate. But if I shake the phone hard in that orientation, the screen will rotate.
So maybe I've got hardware issues.

  • How can I change video screen from landscape to portrait.  It is set to landscape since I updated to IOS 6.  TY

How can I change video screen from landscape to portrait.  It is set to landscape since I updated to IOS 6.  TY

Is the screen-rotation lock on? If it is then there is a padlock shown in the upper right by the battery icon. To turn off double click the Home button and fully swipe the bottom row fully right past the music controls and tap the padlock.
    Otherwise
    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
