Connect the iPhone to a computer and use iTunes to check its storage. Do you see more than 1-2GB of Other? If so, the phone must be restored to correct that issue.
5GB of total storage sounds about right for a phone advertised as 8GB. A portion of the space is used for iOS and included apps and some goes "missing" due to the way the device calculates storage.

If you can't remember your password or security answers and don't have access to the email address (you didn't have a rescue email address on the account ?) then you can try contacting Support in your country and seeing if you can get the password reset and access to the account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 (they should also be able to reset the security questions)
If you can then update the primary email address on the account to be an address that you have access to.

You can not access the backup directly.
Did you restore your replacement from this backup?
If so then you already have everything in the backup on your device.
If not, you can wipe the device and restore from this backup:
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings

It's about 5 years old and I think someone is remotely controlling it even though my remote management and screen sharing is always off in the Sharing panel in Systems Preferences. I don't SHARE anything willingly! My screen shakes up and down or sometimes it just falls a few inches and I keep losing my place. This only happens while I am on the internet. The arrow icon for the mouse also behaves erratically at times, as if it is being controlled by someone else. And I have people stalking me who seem to know what I buy on the internet and where I am going when I use google maps, ect.... I think it may be more of an issue with the startup disk rather than spyware.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

I believe that even a 'little white lie' simply adds a burden in our childrens hearts and allows them to think it is okay. As I was told, "It is okay, how is Apple going to find out?" I do not want to travel that path. Her friends have ipods, our 9 year old cousin has an ipod....Help, Honest Mom in need of a solution.

She can use an iPod. She just can't have her own account in the iTunes Store. The restriction is on using the iTunes Store, not on using apps or playing content purchased from it. You just need to set up an iTunes Store account and buy items for her rather than having her do it on her own.

This is a tedious solution, which is stupid! And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization. I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. So it would seem easy for someone (lets just say a girlfriend for example) to plug my iPhone into her computer while I am staying the night and backup to iTunes. I have my settings to "require a passcode immediately", however there was one day there was access to my passcode at her place while I was not there. So my question is three-fold:
- How can I find out if my iphone has synced with another computer/iTunes (possible history in the iPhone)?
- Are there additional privacy settings to make sure no one can backup my iPhone by plugging it into their iTunes?
- If it has been backed up to another computer is there anything that can be done.
One reason I ask this is because earlier this year her phone was backed up to my iTunes on accident. I did not know it was there until months later, but was able to access it with software.

You don't. Nothing gets stored on the iPhone about what computers the device has been backed up to.

No. You might consider changing your Apple ID password to be on the safe side, though, as well as your security questions.

I Assume you may have more than one, new device. You can check in each devices settings, under cellular/mobile data to see which applications are using the most data.
YOu can then change many of the applications to use wifi only by turning cellular data off.
email and social media apps have settings within the apps to restrict cellular use, like not showing video of images.
restrict application from running in the background by closing apps before leaving home wifi or letting your phone "sleep" at home, while not connected to power. (To save battery your phone switches off wifi, reverting to cellular, not a desirable feature, but it is supposed to save battery)
** to close apps, double click home button and swipe up to close app. Leaving YouTube, Games, Maps, Social media apps open in the background can use mobile data.
clear the "outbox" in email. Cases of massive data use have occurred when an email continues to fail and sits in the out box of the Mail app.
IN General, a newer phone does use more data for the same functions as older phones.

if you do go in to Genius Bar, back up your device. In some cases, replacing or a complete restor are the only solutions.
