  • My hard drive that is sync to my ipad crashed! Good thing is all my photos were transferred to my ipad for viewing - now my quesiton is how do I back up my ipad on another computer without losing my pictures? can I back up my ipad on a external hard drive

My hard drive on my computer crashed!  This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive?  If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?
Thanks for your help - I am worried if I don't do something quick, my ipad will crash too!

Right.  You didn't read the post, you only read the title.
The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud.  The destination of the backup is irrelevant.

  • Can I back up the HDD and an External drive at the same time?

    Hi -
I have a 250Gb HDD (tiny!), but I have just bought myself 2 x 2Gb external drives which I have now formatted.
I intend to move my complete iTunes library on to 1 of the externals and I want to use the other external as a back-up for both the HDD and the other external.
My question is: If I plug both the external drives via USB into my Mac (both then appear on my desktop - one named 'Media', the other named 'Time Machine', is it possible to use Time Machine to back-up not only the HDD, but the 'Media' external drive as well at the same time, or would this be a seperate exercise??
    Thanks.

OK - upon backing up and seeing the results, I see that it has backed up both the HDD and the external, so i kind of answered the question myself...

  • How can I back up mail boxes to an external drive (not using Time Machine)?

I recently lost all of my mailboxes when switching from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion; I still have all of my emails, just without the mailboxes I'd created over the past 6 years to organize these emails.  The files that control organization information for Mail, iPhoto, and iTunes must not be obvious.  The 2 Apple "Geniuses" who wiped my computer after assuring me I'd backed up everything I needed clearly didn't think of mailboxes (Mail), events and albums (iPhoto), and playlists and ratings (iTunes) -- lost all of those.  Would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me where to find the organizational files for Mail that contain the "smart" and regular mailboxes.  Thank you!

Are you referring to mailboxes as in different email domain providers (AOL, Yahoo, GMail, etc???)
Or are you referring to mailboxes as in archived folders with various messages in each?
If the latter, have you considered moving it all to iCloud and not storing anything locally?
I have my folders/boxes in iCloud and dont' botehr with storing anything locally anymore. Too much pain to worry about saving the mailboxes on a USB stick any time you reinstall your OS X.
Moreover ,the new versions always needed to be updated after you imported them back into Mail app.
    Just a thought....
Unless you have more than 5GB of mail stored, I woudl consider moving it to iCloud once and for all.

Can I back up my ipad if the host computer has lost its operating system and the was re-instald?

Yes, this would be like syncing to a new computer. So, some precautions are required or you might lose what's currently on the iPad.
iTunes will only let you sync to one library at a time, if you get this warning message, follow this:

That's the purpose of a sync using a computer with iTunes.

need help/intstruction in backing up my iphoto to an external drive . . . tried suggestions over Youtube and several other internet sources, unsuccessful, please help. thanks. . . .

If your external drive is formatted with the NTFS file system (Windows) OS X can not write to it without installing a third party utility in OS X.
Format the external drive with the FAT file system and it will be compatible with OS X and Windows.

  • I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.
