I am curious if adding an airport express to a time capsule achieves the same results as adding an airport extreme
The answer is that it depends on your requirements.
The AirPort Extreme has a bit better antenna layout, so it will normally provide a bit better range than the AirPort Express. But, the performance of the two devices is very close, wireless wise.
If you need more Ethernet ports on the extending device, the Extreme has 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, while the Express has 2 much slower 10/100 Mbps ports. And, the USB port on the Extreme can be used to connect a hard drive as well as a printer.
The USB port on the Express will only support a printer.
But, the Express has AirTunes capability while the Extreme does not.
If you only need to "extend" using wireless only, the Express is probably the better value, and its smaller size may make installation a bit easier.

  • Do I need a cable connecting my Time Capsule to Airport Express if I want to use the AE to extend my wifi network range?

I'm a bit confused by conflicting advice given by my local Apple shop and my internet provider.
My cable modem is plugged into a Time Capsule which I use to access the net wirelessly almost all over the house.  The one spot the wireless doesn't quite reach is (of course) where I now need my office and iMac to be.
I thought I could just plug in an Airport Express somewhere in the middle  to extend the network's range but the guy at my local Apple shop said the Airport Express would need to be connected not just to power but to the Time Capsule, via a cable.  That's fiddly and would involve cables running under the floor or along walls and ceilings, not something I can or really want to do.  It's not really practical to try and move the cable connection point either.
My internet provider suggested a netgear wireless extender and said that would only need to be plugged into power.  The reviews of the netgear product I found comparing it to Airport Express suggest that the Express doesn't need to be connected to anything other than power either to extend a network range (which was what I originally thought).
So I'm wondering which advice is correct? I've also read that the netgear product isn't all that easy to set up so I'd rather stick with.   Apple if it will do what I want.
Thanks for any help out there

I'm sure that the guy at the Apple shop means well, but he is not correct.
While it would be preferable to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can connect wirelessly and extend the wireless signal the same way....IF...it is located where it can receive a good wireless signal.

I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

I have a net gear router supplied by virgin media. Can I extend my wi-fi range using express or extreme?

Apple designed their "extend" feature with proprietary settings to only work with other Apple routers.
As a consequence, there is virtually no chance that the Apple devices you mention would extend the signal of a non-Apple wireless router...using wireless only.
If you plan to connect the Apple devices back to your Virgin Media router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable, you can configure the AirPorts to provide more wireless coverage that way.

How can I extend my wi-fi range using my time machine?

    Purchase an AirPort Express.
You cannot use an Apple AirPort Base Station to "wirelessly extend" a non-Apple wireless router's signal. If you're using the Time Capsule your wireless router, you can use any Apple AirPort product to "wirelessly extend" its wireless network.

  • Use AirPort Express to Extend Original Router's Range

I have an existing router that works fine for the first and second floors of my house (it is not an Apple router), however, my Apple TV is in the basement and the WiFi coverage is absolutely horrible. I'm curious if I can use an AirPort Express router to extend the range of the initial router (I have Ethernet access in the basement) so that I can stream to my Apple TV from anywhere in the house.
    Thanks!

Yes, if the AirPort Express is configured to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name, same wireless security setting (WPA2 Personal) and same wireless password as your existing router.
In addition, the AirPort must be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Other than naming the network and entering the password, AirPort Utility will take care of most of the settings automatically, assuming you have Mac running Lion (10.7.x), Mountain Lion (10.8.x), Mavericks (10.9.x), or you use an iPhone or iPad for the setup.
Note.....it would be much better if you could connect the Apple TV to the AirPort Express or your existing router using an Ethernet cable connection, not wireless.

  • Extending Console's Date Range

I need to use Console to determine why my Mac Mini wakes on its own in the middle of the night. However, each time I open it to check what's taken place the date range does not go back far enough to track this. I couldn't find any way to extend the date range. I'm using System.log to check for sleep/wake activity.

Thanks for the insights. I was looking at the wrong System.log file. I didn't realize that earlier ones are listed under /private/var/log.
Why does Wake for Ethernet Network always cause the Mini to wake up? I want to leave it on 24/7 but have it go to sleep when not in use for 15 minutes. I have the Energy Control Panel set to do this, but it never does. Hmm

  • Can I use an Airport Express Base Station to extend non-Apple router range?

We have a Netgear 802.11n router in our house. I just bought a MacBook Pro and now am accessing out wifi from the other end of the house along with my iPod Touch 4g. Both seem to show at best about half strength signal strength. House is small and nearly all devices on same floor.
Can I use the Apple Airport Express Base Station as a bridge to extend our wifi network giving me stronger signal for my Apple devices or will it only work with Apple routers? Netgear and others like Hawking make wifi range extenders and those are still under consideration.

It would be extremely unlikely that an AirPort Express would "extend" the wireless network produced by the Netgear router using wireless only. Apple's "extend" feature appears to be proprietary among Apple "n" routers. As far as we know, it does not work with any other manufacturer's products for the purpose of wireless only extension.
If you are planning to connect the AirPort Express to the Netgear using an ethernet connection, then it could be configured to extend that way.

  • Extend Time Capsule Wireless Range

I am having trouble with my Time Capsule's wireless range. I am not a networking expert by any means. I own an old building that is 4 stories connected by stairs with thick walls. All the rooms ethernet cables converge in a cubby on the 3rd floor. I placed my Time Capsule in the cubby, but I couldn't receive a wireless signal from the 1st floor. This is ironic because I have an old Netgear G router that sends signals throughout all 4 floors. So I bought an Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly, but the signal has been unstable perhaps because the Time Capsule's wireless signal is too weak. So I want to connect the Airport Express on the 1st floor using the Ethernet link from the 3rd floor Time Capsule which is my main router. From my research, I discovered about WDS networks, which I believe you have to use in order to create a network with multiple Apple base stations linked through ethernet.
I called Applecare who told me:
-To connect from Time Capsule to Airport Express using Ethernet, must use WDS network. Setup Airport Express as Relay, NOT Remote.
-Relay- Direct ethernet connection from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then wireless connection from Airport Express to Macbook.
-Remote- Wireless signal from Time Capsule to Airport Express, then direct Ethernet connection from Airport Express to Macbook
I have several questions for you wise people out there:
    1. To extend the Time Capsule wireless network using the Airport Express, but connected directly via ethernet, do I need to setup a WDS network?
    2. I prefer to just use the simple Apple settings "extend network wirelessly". Will this setting only boost a wireless signal received from the Time Capsule? Can it not extend a wireless signal sent directly from Ethernet?
    3. I'm considering getting a Quickertek Triband antenna to place outside the cubby. Anyone have any experience with Airport external antennas?:

Any information would be much appreciated! These networking issues have been giving me months of headache.
    Thank you!

Connected with 2.4ghz. band to N capable Macs.

Extending your network with an AirPort Express (AX) won't boost the TimeCapsule's (TC's) range per se. It will expand the network's range by adding another transceiver.
If you'd prefer to avoid using Ethernet to connect the TC and AX, you might get a better signal on the first floor if the AX was on the second floor, i.e, roughly halfway between the TC and the 1st-floor computer. [Extending the range of an 802.11n network|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirPortUtility/5.1/en/ap21 24.html] describes how to configure them.
If an Ethernet linkup is no problem, though, that should work even better. In this case, it's best to use different (by 3 or more) channels on the 2 stations to reduce the chance that they'll interfere with each other.
Either way, it's best to use the same network name, network password, and encryption on both stations so you can roam freely through the building without needing to switch manually between them.
[Designing AirPort Networks 10.5-Windows manual|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] is another good resource you may find helpful.

  • How to extend time capsule wifi range

I have recently purchasd a Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB, hoping it would provide better wifi network all over my house. We live in a 2 story concrete building. It is not possible to connect both the floors with ethernet ( CAT 3 ) cables. I have my old wifi router D-Link DIR-300. Is there a way i can use DIR-300 to extend my wifi range.
    Ground floor - Time Capsule
    First Floor - DIR 300
Note: I do get a poor signal on the first floor on my MBP but my I phone 4 and I pad ( first Generation ) does not recieve any signal.
Since i already own a wireless router i did not want to spend on the airport express for the same purpose.
If anyone can help me connecting DIR-300 to TC to improve the network range.

I have my old wifi router D-Link DIR-300. Is there a way i can use DIR-300 to extend my wifi range.
Unfortunately, this would not be possible if you plan to connect the D-Link device to the Time Capsule using wireless only, since Apple and D-Link products are not compatible for this purpose.
If you can connect the D-Link to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, it would be possible to configure the D-Link to provide additional wireless coverage that way.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters might be able to send an "Ethernet" signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.
In other words, you already have the wiring in place....you just need the adapters.
Unfortunately again....the Ethernet powerline adapters will likely be about the same cost as an AirPort Express. Since you note that you live in a concrete building....the adapters might be first choice over a wireless only setup.
In either case, you will not know how well the setup will work until you try. For that reason, it would be a good idea to have a good understanding of the store's return policy in case things do not work out as expected.

  • Extending my Extreme's Range w/ Express -- Problems with WDS

Hi, I recently purchased an Airport Express for the "express" reason of extending the range of my Airport Extreme. The extreme is located downstairs, and I've got the express upstairs. Now, I've done some research, and these are the directions I followed to get my extreme and express talking:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
I've got a solid green light on the express, so I know it's "working", or at least, it thinks it is. But, I'm not convinced. My connection speeds have been less than satisfactory (I'm on broadband Comcast cable - 4mbps). And, signal strength coming to my G5 upstairs is still only 3 bars - not the full 4. It bounces back and fourth, but tends to stay at 3, and even gravitates down to 2 some times. The express is no further than 10 feet away!
The way I've got this set up, all computers on the wireless network are only recognizing one network "themoores". That's fine, I haven't set up any others. I assumed the Extreme, once set up properly (and per those directions I followed) basically takes the Express under its wing and merges it into its wireless network. I can differentiate them only when I go to the Airport Admin Utility to separately configure them.
So -- what am I doing wrong? Why aren't I getting a full blast of signal? Should I have two wireless networks set up, instead of just one -- should the express be distributing its own IP addresses?
This I do know -- once I had it set up, it did acknowledge that WDS had been established successfully.
    Someone help, please!
    Thanks,
    Jeron

Hey Jeron, I went through this with Apple Airport Express/Extreme and added in the "little" Express units until I had four of them and two of the full size Airport units in the house. Now the house was NOT huge. Only about 4000 sq feet on one level. But thanks to old lathe and plaster walls, etc., the signals could not make it from room to room. I finally bought a couple of Dr. Bott's omni directional antennas (they're $59/each for a hunk of cheap plastic!) and that helped. I added them onto the full sized Airport base stations. The other thing is to make sure when you're doing the set-up, that all units are on the same channel. It is possible during set up to put one unit on Channel 6 and the other on Channel 11 and then they don't communicate the way they're supposed to although the Wireless Distribution will still set up and confirm that it has turned on.
I do not know why but Apple Airport units (which work so great with Macs) seem to have really lousy range and power output. I have a friend who lives two doors away in an equally large old house. He gets coverage of the whole house from one single high end Linksys wireless router unit. It even covers his back yard! With Airports, you'll get no such coverage unless you spend some money and put external antennas on your Airports. (Notice the plural - I said AIRPORT S! You're gonna have a few of them!)
Next house I'm going to go with Linksys. While Apple does a lot of things very very well, building these wireless routers is something other vendors do better at a far lower cost. I do wish Apple would put some money into the R&D on these units and come up with something that was worth their premium prices that integrated fully with our beloved Macs and worked as well (if not better) than the offerings from other vendors.
Years ago, Apple got out of the laser printer business when people found that HP and Cannon had better units for a third less money. I suspect that's what's going to happen with the Networking Routers/Base Stations, eventually. I have no inside info, but I do remember the old Apple Laser printers (fondly - they were Sherman tanks of the printer business) and they were dropped when it became obvious that the price performance ratio was not there for Apple's offerings.
Today, almost any other vendor's offerings have better performance than Apple Base Stations. Very few offer the streaming audio that the Airport Express offers, but then I don't use it much anyway because we have six or seven iPods scattered around the house and any one of them can be plugged into any of our stereo systems at will. Frankly, other than the excellent software for the Airport Admin and set-up functions, I cannot think of a single justification for paying far too much and getting so little with Apple's Wireless Networking offerings. With the newer web based configuration features, if you can open a web page you can configure the router today. So, IMHO, Apple has fallen too far behind the curve on this product line and it's time to leave it to those who'll invest the time and money to do it right - providing customers with value for their money and performance too!

  • Help!!! Need to extend the airport wireless range for my place of business

I was recently moved to an area in my place of business where my wireless connection is just out of range from my macbook pro. My job requires me to be connected constantly to the internet and am stuck on how I can reconnect to our companies wifi network access. Are there any 3rd party products that can help me boost the wifi signal from my macbook? Please keep in mind that for a better part of the day im in my pickup so I can't use something like an airport express since I don't have an outlet to connect it to.
    TY in advance.
P.S. Im about 200 feet away from our networks closest access point.

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3.183.23 or later, is for Intel Macs only running Tiger or Leopard, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.4.402.265 is for Snow Leopard onwards.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Using AE to extend non-apple wireless range...

    Hi all,
I have a Linksys router which covers most of my apartment, but I was hoping to use an Airport Express to extend the wireless coverage to a "dead spot". I have managed to get the AE to operate using a couple of HomePlug ethernet-over-the-mains devices but can't figure out the settings to create another access point.
Has anyone got an AE to do this?
    Thanks!

Whether you can get it to work or not may depend on the particular model number of the Linksys router. I suggest that you post the model number here in this thread.
If you have no success, you may need to purchase a compatible Linksys access point or else purchase an AirPort Extreme Base Station to replace the Linksys router.

  • Need help finding wired access point or range extender?

I currently have a EA6500 in a rather large home.  (4500 sq ft)   The router is on one side of the house and my office is on the other side of the house where wireless does not work well.   I am trying to use Samsung Tablet but the connection keeps dropping here.  when I move the tablet closer it works fine.
Is there a range extender/access point I can purchase to use with the EA6500 where I can connect device via wired ethernet?
If I connect range extender/access point to EA6500 router via wireless the signal in my office appears too weak to be extended properly?  I tried the RE1000 but was not successful.
Please let me know if there is another product to try.
    Thank you.

Was this extender working fine before and you’re trying to reconfigure its settings? In order for this to work properly, the wireless settings for the main router should be synchronized to it. After making sure that the wireless settings are synchronized, place the extender to an area in between the router and where you want to repeat the signal. If you will encounter connection problems after setting up the extender, you can reset the extender and reconfigure the settings. Make sure as well that the firmware is upgraded. For more info about setting up the range extender, you can refer to the following links:  What to do before manually setting up your range extender, Setting up the range expander without the installation CD, Getting to Know the WRE54G v3.
