Syncing ipad with iphone

I have an iPad 3 32GB. Am thinking about buying an iphone also , but just a 16GB , as that is plenty of space (and cost) for me.
Using the same Apple ID , the problem is I have too many apps I need to use on my iPad and they would take up more than the space than would be on the 16GB iphone if I synced them.
Using the same Apple ID on both is there any way to sync just some of the apps from my ipad to iphone? If I need to use a new ID for the iphone I would then have to purchase all the apps I need again.

I have not synced more than one device before with iTunes. If I start the setup process on the iphone using my Apple ID won't it be setup as a mirror image on my current ipad with all the apps on the ipad trying to be shown on the iphone which has less memory?
Where can I tell it to set up selected apps etc. only?

Can't find the answer to this question directly, hence posting it here.
My nephew's iPad has many apps , and photos, and he has never synced it to iTunes. He want's me to help him. I'm reasonably familiar with both iPad and iTunes.
However - I'm worried that when he connects to iTunes for the 1st time he will have the iPad wiped clean by the empty iTunes session.
I have searched high and low but can't find a reassuring set of steps to follow.
Hence I would be very grateful to anyone who can point to complete, thorough online instructions, or offer them yourself, on what _precisely_ I must do to get his iPad synced to a new iTunes session for the very first time, without loosing the iPad content.
We need to upgrade the OS badly (its the OS released from the shop purchase).

PS: Apple - if you readt this - iTunes and syncing is a very tricky to handle, with potential dire consequences if you do it wrong even once. At a minimum, please offer greater felxibility and more detailed tutorials across various troubleshooting scenarios such as mine

roaminggnome - my nephew was 10 when he got it and his family are not particularly computer savy. It didn't occur to them that syncing was such a priority. Thanks for the pointer to Apple feedback - I'll post my suggestion to them (I'm sure they've received it many times before!)

hey guys, just purchased the new ipad and trying to sync my iphone4S, have used icloud to do this, but missing from the content on the ipad are the messages and photos and cannot seem to transfer them from my iphone...any suggestions?...be good to hear from you, cheers...robbo

Yes you are right ,the messages on my iphone are a different app,but have configured the ipad to receive any NEW messages via icloud.
I am now downloading the pics to ipad via computor and its working!

When you go through the Setup Assistant it should ask you if you want to Restore from a backup and will let you select your Cloud backup.

If your cellular plan/carrier allows use of the iPhone as a hot spot, yes. Verizon does on some plans, at least in my area, but I can't speak for other providers.Set up on the iPhone is in the Settings App > Personal Hotspot.

If you are in Starbucks etc then you should be able to use their wifi network on your iPad without needing the iPhone. Using the iPhone as a hotspot will use the phone's 3G service (and therefore some of your 3G data allowance), and your iPad will see the phone as a wifi network - but yes (assuming that your phone carrier supports it) you will be able to access the internet on your iPad via the iPhone.

I don't want to sync what is on my iPod to my iPad. (I have a 32gb iPod but only 16gb on iPad. The iPod I use mostly for music.) I can't seem to add the films I have downloaded onto iPad to iTunes. If I could do that, I could erase them from iPad to create more storage.

Answer.....
Yes you will lose the films that you downloaded to the iPad when you sync with your own iTunes unless you transfer the purchases into your own iTunes library. Were these movies that you purchased? If so, you might be able to download them again for free. Do you have multiple computers that you sync from or is this someone else's purchased content?
You can select whatever you want to sync to all of your devices in iTunes, you do not have to sync the same content to all device.

Mavericks syncs Calendar via iCloud.
Make sure you have the same iCloud account set up on your mac and your iPhone.
In System Preferences > iCloud, make sure the Calendars checkbox is checked.
In System Preferences > Internet Accounts, iCloud should be an account in the box on the left, and Calendars should be checked in the box on the right. If you have other calendars, for example, from work, make sure those are enabled too.

If you lost all your apps on both the iPad and the computer, you can download the apps again at no cost. You can search your emails for app store purchases if you can't remember all the apps that you have downloaded.

How do I figure out what purchases have not been transferred? I went into iTunes on my Mac and ran "Check for available downloads" and I still get same message.

The 'cehck for available downloads' checks if there is anything in the store that you haven't yet downloaded, it won't copy anything from the iPad. Have you tried doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases ?

On you iPhone, force close all the Apps in the multitask window.
Follow these steps to force an app to close:
From the Home screen, click the Home button twice.
Tap and hold on the app.
When it starts to jiggle, tap the to close it one by one until all cleared
Now do a Soft reset of your iPhone:
Hold both Home and Sleep button for around 10secs until you see the Apple logo then release. After it returns to Home screen, connect to sync and see if this resolves the issue.

     You can only sync music via computer iTunes.
     Watch this iPod video, it's the same for iPhone.

     Not true. You CAN sync music via Wifi.
Did I mention anything about cable? So what is not true?
