HT4235 Itunes only sees ipod nano in disk mode and still won't sync it

I have to place my ipod nano in disk mode for itunes (or Windows for that matter) to find it. In disk mode Windows and Itunes see the ipod and it passes all the diagnostic tests save for the sync test where it can no longer see the ipod and apparently a file is also not found. I'm ready to just reset it, but am unable to make that happen.
This problem began when I downloaded some songs from Amazon and fumbled the job purchasing and downloading some of them twice. Not very smart, but it was late. Anyway, I also downloaded their Cloud player and had it pass the songs to itunes. It was in itunes that I saw the duplicate copies of the songs. Itunes and the cloud player proceeded to butt heads, I deleted the the extra song copies and also uninstalled the Amazon cloud player. Then itunes went into the state I've described above.
I'd appreciate any help.

  • IPOD nano in DISK MODE, but still not RECOGNIZED

My Ipod Nano has stopped being recognized by my PC (Windows XP OS). After reading the discussion topics here I had a hope that after switching it to DISK MODE, the PC might recognize my Nano. However, it still doesn't. I hope the Wizrds out here rectify the problem I am facing with my IPod.

Try restoring your iPod (in Disk Mode) from somebody else's computer. (This might replace everything on it with their music for the time being, but you already seem willing to wipe your iPod, so it should be OK.) If it works, then try to do the same thing again on yours. But the problem in this case would be not with your iPod but with your computer. Try reinstalling iTunes. If that doesn't work, then the issue is probably a more general one with your Windows installation and it may be difficult to find help here.
If on the other hand your iPod won't restore in disk mode from ANY computer, then the only option I see remaining is to take it in for servicing.

My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • TS1372 I have iPod Classic in Disk Mode and when i connect it to my apple computer it does not appear in iTunes and the screen displays a message saying "Do not disconnect" with a circle with a line through it, flashing. What do I do now?

I have iPod Classic in Disk Mode and what do I do next cause it's not showing up in iTunes?

Does the iPod appear on your desktop as an external hard drive?  Has the iPod ever successfully connected before?  Disconnect your iPod and reset it using the Select (Center) and Menu button combo.  Then reboot your Mac, open iTunes, and reconnect your iPod to a high powered USB 2.0 port and see if it's recognized.
Have you worked through all the troubleshooting here?

  • In Disk Mode and songs won't transfer from IPod to ITunes

When I called Apple, the gentleman told me that I first needed to put my IPod into Disk Mode. I got my IPod into disk mode and thought I'd be able to transfer songs very easily, atleast it was last time. I had to reinstall ITunes and lost my Library so I thought I could just pull them off my IPod. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
    YamiPod Software (Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • IPod Nano 3rd Gen. Problems [Rebooting, Won't Sync Contact/Calendar Data]

I have noticed that my iPod nano will reboot itself after it has been syncing/charging. It reboots when I go to the last playlist that was playing before I began to sync/charge it. Also, it would randomly reboots when I am selection a playlist.
Then, it won't sync my contact/calendar data if it nearly full. But I can sync them when it is nearly empty.
What is causing the problem and how can I fix it?

if you have done restores then possibly it is a firmware issue... i would take it to the apple store if you can to get it looked at...

  • ITUNES only sees ipod if plugged in at system bootup time

    Anyone have and ideas?
Up until 6:00PMish last night I was running ITUNES 4 without any problems. I had difficulty upgrading to version 6 awhile ago so I decided to stay on 4 for now. When I wanted to buy a song last night, the ITUNES store forced me to upgrade to version 7.
It's been a nightmare since then and it has taken me the better part of 8 hours to recover from the chaos. This was ridiculous to be nice about it. ITUNES unauthorized my more recent songs when I tried to bounce back to version 4 (from the ipod box). I had no choice but to go to version 7 because I couldn't authorize the songs with version 4 when the store needed version 7.
I think I am now in a reasonable state. However, ITUNES have what appears to be the popular problem where it can't see the ipod (my computer sees it). I tried all of the solutions that I could find and nothing has worked. What I have determined is that the only way ITUNES sees the ipod is if the ipod is plugged in when I boot up the PC. It never seems to see it when plugging it in otherwise.
All I want is for this to work like it worked just fine with version 4. Note that an ipod upgrade to 1.4 (from 1.3) didn't seem to work for some reason so I am still on 1.3.
Any ideas anyone how to make ITUNES recognize the ipod all of the time?
Sorry so much stuff but I'm pretty PO'd about all of this. I see where they want $50 for a call when you can't even get through to them. What about my 8+ hours and the countless hours of all of the people that seem to be having major problems with version 7 (given the count numbers of people reviewing stuff here). It's terrible.

  • I erased my iPod nano with disk utility and tried to restore but I get a 1430 error and it never restores.

Ok so I tried to connect my iPod nano to my computer, but when I opened iTunes, the iPod automatically ejected. I thought that restoring it would fix that, but since I couldn't restore it in iTunes because it kept ejecting itself, I decided to erase it using disk utility. I read on here that it's possible to do that. So then my iPod said to restore in iTunes after I erased it, so I did, but it failed with an 1430 error. How do I fix it? Is my iPod destroyed for good?

Take a look at this support document regarding that error. iPod: Can't restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439 - Apple Support

  • Ipod Nano in disk mode

Is it a bad idea to keep syncing my ipod using disk mode? This is the only way Itunes 9.1 will not crash when connected to my ipod.

    Hello Livinghost,
Is it a bad idea to keep syncing my ipod using disk mode? This is the only way Itunes 9.1 will not crash when connected to my ipod.
No. Users you manually manage their iPod's contents must always have this option enabled. And if it keeps your iPod from crashing for the time being or until Apple releases another update, then stick with it.

  • My ipod nano's battery died and now won't turn back on... help? =]

Okay so I was listening to my ipod in the car and it died. I tried to charge it at my friend's house with her iphone charger and it wouldn't turn back on. I plugged it in at home and it still won't start and itunes shows that it's not even plugged in. I tried that shindig where you switch the hold button then press those two buttons but that didn't work either... help?

My 3rd gen nano did the exact same thing to me as well today. I tried doing the reset and nothing happened. I tried calling Apple, but they said it's out of phone warranty, so they couldn't do much. They said they didn't recognize the error I'm getting, so they recommended taking it into a store. When I attach it to my computer, I don't get any response from the ipod, but my computer says that there is new hardware that says "Apple Recovery (DFU) Driver." iTunes tries to read the ipod but says it has an unknown error (-185). I am extremely frustrated. Anyone have suggestions as to what is going on?

  • My iPod is in Recovery Mode and it won't let me restore it.

My iPod touch is currently in Recovery Mode, and I'm not sure how it happened. When I plug it in to my PC, iTunes says that I must restore it. When I try to restore it, I encounter one of many problems. Sometimes the update will be corrupted after downloading, sometimes I get an error code, I once got an error code that's not even listed (1656). I've tried restoring it on multiple machines, and I'm getting a little frusturated/scared. My iPod is only a few months old. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Edit: I've also tried restoring using an IPSW downloaded from the internet.
Edit 2: My brother is having the exact same problem with his iPhone, which isn't in Recovery Mode.
