HT4236 ITHMB FILES

Why does the sync process assign a "ithmb" file type to photos when syncing to computer?  How do I change the file type so that I can view them on the PC computer w/Windows?
Thanks,
NOTCHY

ITHMB is the file extension specific for the iOS. It is created when you sync your iOS device with iTunes. The files are then saved to your iOS device, as well as to your PC or Mac.
ITHMB files contain images optimized for the specific iOS device screen size and display mode. This makes navigation faster and increases energy efficiency, saving your battery juice. Besides ITHMB files, iTunes generates an index file containing image metadata including file name, size and date. Together the index file and ITHMB files form a full-fledged image database.
Therefore, unless you stop syncing photos completely you can't get rid of them as they will be regenerated as long as the photos are on the device. The only way to reduce the amount of space they take up without turning off syncing completely is to reduce the number of photos being synced.

  • Photos uploaded to iPad sync to PC .iThmb files...how change setting?

I'm surprised that I couldn't find a prior post about this. I bought the adapter that let's you upload photos directly to iPad (which I like a lot - can view/thin/email pics from the road). But when you sync to a PC laptop, it uploads them into my docs as iThmb files. Anyone know if there is either a settings solution to change import type...or software app that will convert a selection of ithmb files jpeg? I don't care about opening them in ithmb and don't want to convert file at a time. someone hipper than me must know how to do this

An .ithmb file is the format used to store pictures on an iPod. There are several applications that can open .ithmb files such as File Juicer and Keith's iPod Photo Reader

Sorry, should've mentioned some more information. I synced the ipad to the folder of photos. The original photos had file names like "_MG_4865.jpg" and after syncing the folder in Itunes, all files were now found in a folder called "iPod Photo Cache" which was filled with many folders with labels like "F23" etc. (There were ALOT of photos.) In those folders there are several files with names like "T343.ithmb". Not a .jpg to be found and I can't view any of the photos.

Unfortunately... Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...

  • Bad ithmb files preventing PhotoLibrary backup

I am having problems backing up my iPhoto Library.
I have tried various methods, to two different destinations, and get a message about a bad ithmb file which aborts the copy. When I tried to discard that ithmb file, I get the same message for another ithmb file.
I have one back up of my Library. It seems to have the same problem. When I try to copy it from the external drive it is on, to another drive I get the same error message.

Okay. That fixed my iPhoto problem.
Now I can't sync my photos with iTunes though. After dumping the cache. iTunes optimized the photos. I assume that rebuilt the cache? It took a long time. When I came back to check on it, there was an error message that said something to the effect of 'file not available to read or write'
I WAS able to copy the photo library to my iPod using it as an external drive. I did this because I had to delete my previous Photo Library back up from my external backup drive to make enough room for the new auto back-up software to write to that disk.
I left the backup running when I left for work. Hopefully it will run successfully.

  • Opening ITHMB files on my mac

Why cant i open ithmb files on my mac? I have recently changed from PC to mac...thought ithmb was an apple format?

    Hi attekiller,
Terminal seemed to work, but when i told it to execute, it said that I did not have the permission to do so, even though I am the root administrator. I selected the bat file and went file> get info to change the permission, but it said i could only read and write, not execute it. Does this mean that I cannot use terminal to open this?
Terminal refuses to execute the file as a precaution, since it can not execute the instructions included in the file.
Read+Write only means that you can 'edit' the text file, but Terminal (and OSX) have no way to execute the Windows System Calls in it.
I have Crossover lying around since the LameDuck day but haven't had the time to 'play' with it.
As said you have to execute the batch file while you are in Crossover Windows, so maybe when you import/copy the .bat file into Crossover when running it should enable you to run the file (using the Windows Command Prompt for example).
Try the Crossover Support Forums or Library http://www.codeweavers.com/support/ for help on how-to do this.

  • .ithmb files on PC

I have an iPhone 6 and several iPads that I sync with my one windows PC. Each time that I sync a device with my windows PC within iTunes, it creates several .ithmb files. The file names start with "T167.ithmb" and end with "T9667.ithmb" All devices have iCloud enabled. I do not want these .ithmb files saved in my pictures, only the actual JPEGS that are also synced over. I am running x64 Win7. Any ideas?

  • Ithmb file extn

previously when i used my media card reader to download photos from my camera's memory card to my ipod i could not view the photos until i had downloaded the photos to my computer and then back to the ipod. However, 2 ipod updates later i now see the pictures immediatley on download from the media card reader BUT cannot view them on my PC (and therefore cannot edit or print them) as they are saved with a new .ithmb file extension.
The people in the Apple store seem to be blissfully unaware of this problem and so cannot help - has anybody else experienced this prolem and how can i get around it?

is there any way to do this pls?

  • Ithmb files convert or transfer

Had an iPhone, lost the iPhone but still have the cached ithmb files plus DB on my PC (which I can't even view) I have an iPod classic.
Question is, how do I convert the ithmb files into something I can view on a PC or is it more viable to transfer the files onto my iPod to view? Or do I need to buy an new iPhone?

    Hi Mike
There was a very amusing discussion about this some time ago, here is a link if you are interested:

this subject is starting to hurt my head. I feel like I'm trying to herd cats! basically I import a raw file and convert it to DNG in lightroom then make any gross adjustments i.e. crop, sharpening, contrast, brightness etc. Then send it onto photoshop which by default gives the file a pro photo profile then make a duplicate copy and convert the copy to sRGB and output as a jpg to send to the printer (this is the profile and file format the company wants). I realize I lose some gamut when I convert but will at least regain some of the brightness/ contrast and adjust the gains on the colors if I adjust the converted file to try to match the pro photo file?
    Mike
I would make sure in your color settings that preserve embedded profiles is enabled. I say that because if you open up one of your sRGB outputs later on with this option disabled, you are viewing the sRGB numbers in your Pro Photo working space which is not a good approach.
If you have a Pro Photo that needs to output sRGB, definitely convert, and the perceptual (photographic) rendering may yield best results, although you may prefer relative colorimetric.
If any Pro Photo colors that reside beyond the boundaries of sRGB take a huge hit, then you have the option of an adjustment layer in the sRGB result to make it more satisfactory. If you start to pile on a lot of adjustment layers then 16 bit can help reduce the damage of the numerous adjustments. Hope this helps.

how do i view the .ithmb files, that get saved to my computer, on my computer?

Just drag the gif onto the safari or firefox icon on your dock.

  • Lost Orig JPEG Photo files, can I rebuild from ithmb files?

lost the original JPEG pictures (on bad hard drive)used to create I-pod photo pics, and didn't have another back up. Thought I could get off I-pod, but they are in a different format on I-pod. Any suggestions to recover JPEG files?

Prior to HD failure you had a site defined in Dreamweaver?
You uploaded the files using DW's FTP.
If so, now that you are up and running again, open DW,
    recreate the site
definition, connect to the Remote site and "GET" the files,
    bringing them
    back down to your computer.

  • Restoring ithmb photo thumbnail files after restoring ipod

I have lots of photos on my ipod that i copied from my computer when i was back at home, i'm miles away from home and won't be back until another year.
I DID NOT include the full resolution photos when i copied the photos so I just have thumbnails which are stored in 10 .ithmb files.
I need to restore my ipod as i have video issues so have copied all my music and videos to a PC.
The folder 'photos' which contains a file called 'Photo Database' and the sub dir called 'Thumbs' which contains the 10 .ithmb files, if i copy these to back to the ipod after restoring will my thumbnails be restored ok and work as normal?

They should be, however i cannot garuntee it..sorry. You could google a program that will copy the photos off your Ipod. You could then copy the pics off your Ipod and onto your computer. Then restore your ipod and then reimport the pics back onto your computer. If you just copy and paste all the files on the iPod, restore it, then replace the folders again with the copies you made u could end up with the same problem again. But that is depending on how you got the songs off the iPod.
    Hope this helps...

  • Recovered photos from bad driver, but files are .ithmb, & won't convert!!!

Hi, .. My hard-drive was damaged, and Time Machine backed-up everything on the external drive, except my second iPhoto Library, called iPhoto Library-2, .. and Genius Bar couldn't find the reason, nor could they fix it. For some reason Time Machine just saved thumbnails, and the dates and the locations were all intact.
However, when the technician tried to recover data from the bad drive, using Mac Drive, Media Four, via PC, all the pictures from Library-2 has .ithmb extension. Not Library one. Library one is fine just like time-machine back-up. I used File Juicer to convert .ithmb files into readable file, but it couldn't do it.
My question is, .. Has this happened to anyone? Why the rescued files are .ithmb? Did we recover the data in a wrong way? Are the picture in Library 2 corrupted, thus damaged drive, & the thumbnails? Should we use another software to recover? Is the problem using a PC to recover instead of a Mac?
Thank you in-advance for your help. Babak
P.S. Time-Machine's back-up shows Library 2 thumbnails, under 1GB, which is no way 19,000 pictures be under 1GB, but the data recovery rescue shows 14GB. .. I'm very confused what to do. Specially, that all the pictures from my iPhone was accidentally erased the next day by iTunes, even-though I stopped the sync, somehow pictures were deleted. So, my only hope is rescuing the pictures from the bad drive.

Hi, I don't know if you're still looking for an answer, but I can tell you that you can easily convert those .ithmb files to viewable .jpgs files on your working pc. It's a bit time consuming but easy. Don't waste your money on expensive software or recovery options, because they will not work. This is freeware and it's a very small command line program. You can download it for free here:
    http://www.4shared.com/file/50707723/37b8a1ad/iThmbConv.html
    Now follow these steps:
    1. Create a new foder called Thumbs as a subdirectory of your hard drive. I assume this your C: drive. (example C:\Thumbs)
    2. Copy all the .ithmb files into this folder.
    3. Download the iThmbConv program file directly into this folder.
    4. Now, on your pc desktop, go to Start, Run and enter cmd in the box. Hit okay.
    5. When the black screen command prompt comes on, type cd.. at the end of the prompt line. Press Enter.
    6. The next line should only show C:\> If not, enter cd.. again to just show C:\>
    7. Now type cd Thumbs When you press enter, the next line should be C:\Thumbs>
    8. Assuming one of your .ithmb picture files is named T100. (They are all T and a number, so I'm using T100 as an example) Now type iThumbConv T100.ithmb
You should now see a few copies of your original .ithmb file in the Thumbs folder in a format that is viewable on your pc such as .jpg or whatever.
Repeat step #8 for each additional .ithmb file you want to convert. Then, you can ditch the the copies you don't need.
    uming, but easy.
