HT4245 Firewall ports & face time

I worked with my provider to open the firewall ports in the article referred to me by tech support. I still can't connect face time or iMessage even though everything else connects. Now what?

Hi guys,
I read some of the other posts on iAd/face time issues, and one person recommended that you replace your DNS address with googles 8.8.8.8
I ran this by Apple senior tech Kirk, who said this woukd work, however you. May have issues with certain sites/apps. He said that if you did that, activated face time and/or iMessage then returned to settings/wifi/DNS and erased it, yor IP would replace it with the correct one.
I did just that, as well as returning my firewalls to their default settings...
It works get!!
How cool is that!? Kudos to ALL the community of support!

    Hi.
I cannot sign in to FT . I found the following answer http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245 but I am not sure if I must apply it .
I have added the FT app to the list in the security / advanced section .
Shall I try first to delete FT app and its cache and plist file ? Then reinstall it .
The iMac I use has Snow Leopard 10.6.7 .
I do not understand why FT doesn't work and iChat does . Skype also works fine .
If someone could contribute I'd appreciate it .
    Thank you .

    Hi,
Your router (or modem that routes) may offer several different ways to open or allow ports to be used.
You would normally access the set up pages of the router in a web browser (Except for Apple Base Stations)
This requires the IP of the router and the User Name and Password info.
The IP can be seen in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab (As "Router IP")
The default info on the User ID and Password can be gained here
    Click on your device.
Dismiss the next page at the top right
Chose an App in the next page (If iChat does not work chose AIM Talk as it has less ports and gets you to the next page)
On the next page you have to scroll a bit.
When the pics start it will tell you the default User Id And Passwords along with the IP address
It is now a question of searching all the tabs, menu and links on each page to find UPnP as it is in different places on different devices (if it is there at all)
Netgears tend to always have a menu down the left and UPnP is nearer the bottom as a separate menu item.
Linksys devices have it in the tab called Administration
D-Links tend to need Tools or Advanced across the tabs and Advance Networking down the menu buttons
Zyxels have a three column menu of links and it is at the bottom of the middle row.
Netopias and Motorolas don''t have UPnP
Port Forwarding tend to be easier to spot and the Port Forward link page will show you as well.
This is normally a table of ports and a listing of an IP  that they are being sent to. (this should be the IP of the computer)
It can list Start and End ports (you list the same for single ports)
Sometimes they follow a setting such as 5190,5678,16384-16402 where single ports and groups are mixed (Commas and dashes only no spaces)
There may also be a a check box for Enabled.
You may also get a choice for Port Triggering (Advanced/Special Applications) which allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
DMZ (Demilitarised Zone) is a sort of extreme Port Forwarding. It is an On Off setting that allows All 65535 ports to be open to one IP (Computer)  Useful for testing but lacks security.
Like a Web Browser, iChat and Face time use IP addresses to connect to the Buddy.
It helps if the DNS server info is working.
Some DNS servers are better at wider address areas so adding other DNS servers like that thread can help.
If you are now working it is likely that the router is already doing UPnP.

  • I recently purchased face time, yet every time I try to sign in I get error message that I need to check my internet connection. And my firewall is off! Help please.

I recently purchased face time, yet I am unable to sign in - I keep getting an error saying I need to check my internet connection. I have turned off my firewall. Any thoughts???

I just installed it today and was signed in at the end of installation and when I quit the program and tried to sign back in I started getting the same message. My firewall is off as well. I wish someone would answer the friggin question LoL.

  • I have just installed Lion OS and Face Time encounters server problems on sign up. I have sought the firewall problem without success and even temporarily turned off firewall with no success.

Some folks have discovered that changing their DNS service fixes FaceTime connection issues.
    The ideal way is to configure your modem/router with DNS service, but often settings in System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS on your Mac will override the router settings. Try either of these;
    OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Google Public DNS
    8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

  • HT4245 face time does not connect when receiving or dialing out

face time does not connect when receiving or dialing out

It finally seems to work (2nd day now and counting)...
I tried the following with no luck:
    upgrading to iOS 5
adding an associated e-mail and calling that associated e-mail
do a full-scale registration of the e-mail (and making a free purchase via itunes) instead of a 'facetime only' registration
this combo however seems to have done the trick:
    keeping the ipad2 plugged in
changing the dns on the ipad to "8.8.4.4,8.8.8.8"
If it continues to work for a few more days, then i think i can say the the problem is finally resolved.

  • HT4245 sometimes but not always the send button is not activated when sending an  imessage through face time on my ipad

Sometimes when sending or replying to a message through face time my send button does not work.  If I close the app and reopen it the send button has worked but not always.  This is very speratic.

    Hello cjtulowiecki,
You’re having problems with the computer not booting sometimes.
    Do a hard reset.
    Power off the computer.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
Next test all the hardware in the system.
As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
    Run the startup test.
Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.

  • Hi, I have just purchased a ipad mini for my wife and have registered it in my name so that i can add some apps that i think she would appreciate. However if i want to contact her using face time it is registered in my name, how do you get around that?

Hi I have just purchased an i pad for my wife and have registered it in my name to add some apps prior to giving the i pad to her. However, for using face time and games where you can link via wifi it will look as though there are two of the same, if I am trying to link her ipad to mine. How do you get around this?

  • Face Time in 10.7.2 Lion

Hello Folks, I am UK based
I recently became an Apple convert.  My system is an late 2009 27” iMac with a 1Tb TimeCapsule.  I use an Ethernet wired connection for my iMac from my modem/router router with wired Ethernet HomePlug for my TV and other Windows based PCs.  Laptops can access the net from either the TimeCapsule Airport wireless or the wireless modem/router depending on wireless card and software.
I see the threads regarding Face Time connection problems.  Perhaps my experience may be of some help.   Please bear with the longish story before I get to the point.
I started to question my ISP about my poor download rate through my local exchange by using the ADSL and Fibre to the Cabinet diagnostics tool from speedtester.bt.com.  I took readings over many months and showed that on my supposed 8Mbps download rated line I was getting anywhere between less than 1 to 4.5 Mbps.  I eventually was told by my ISP that it could be my old modem/router and that I should try to upgrade to an ADSL2/2+ variant to see if that improved the rate. The ISP told me that the modem/router and the network card interact and the network card in the exchange decide and set the IP profile to what it thinks my router and the line can handle.  Fair enough, the exchange is 3.5 miles away and we are fairly remote in the countryside.  The speedtester states that for my connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.  I used a Belkin F5D7630-4A ADSL wireless modem/router but I changed to the F5D7632-4 in my attempt to improve the speed. I then bought an Edimax AR-7284 MnA 150 Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ modem/router in an attempt to improve matters.  This worked and I achieved a fairly consistent speed around 5 to 5.5 Mbps.
Meanwhile I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7 from the App store when it was released.  My daughter bought a Macbook Air.  We tried to connect through FaceTime.  When I was working with either of the Belkin routers FaceTime worked seamlessly.  As soon as I used the Edimax router we could not connect.  Nothing I gleaned from any of the support threads, changing DNS settings or using specific ports etc helped.  I asked Edimax support to advise and see if they could get the application to work but they too were unable.  The Edimax also barred me from my secure banking connection and a few other websites and nothing I did resolved this.  I had the Edimax replaced but the replacement did the same.  I then replaced it with a Belkin F5D8365uk4-v1ADSL2/2+ modem/router, this unfortunately was faulty but was replaced.  FaceTime worked seamlessly on this variant but it made no difference to the download rate from the exchange.  I now realise that the Belkin F5D7632-4 is an ADSL2 modem/router and from its LAN setup webpage shows Data Rate Down/Up of 6720Kb/448Kb and thus should give me the best that my line can give which is about 5 to 5.5 Mbps.  I have reverted to using it but still have line rate issues.
FaceTime still works perfectly with the Belkin F5D7632-4 as it did with the later variant.
    My point.
Perhaps it is the hardware that causes all these FaceTime problems and not the Apple Software.
Thanks for reading.  Comments greatfully received.  A Festive Season to all.
    Speckled Jim

Have you checked your firewall settings? You have to allow incoming connections for your application (i.e. FaceTime).

  • TS4268 Face time or iMessage will not activate

I have done everything the support page says but I keep getting the grey box that says no network connection when I try to activate my Face Time.  Yet I have not changed any settings and Face Time was working fine last week.  The only thing that I have done at the beginning of the week was back up my iCloud. A info box popped up on the screen telling me to back it up, but I couldn't get the box to go away. I couldn't even turn my iPad off the normal way.  Instead I had to press both buttons at the same time to restart my iPad and since then I can't get Face Time or my IMessages to work.  But obviously my intent connection is fine since I can post this message.  Please help me.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
