HT4413 I migrating from my macbook to new imac. nothing showed up until I turned off the imac but everything I had done previously on the imac disappeared.

I was migrating from macbook to a new imac.
Nothing showed up until I turned off the imac.
When I restarted the imac everythign I'd previously done was gome and the migrated macbook desktop had taken over.
How do I bring back the original imac settings.
Thanks

You can't. When you migrate user accounts, those settings will be used. That's the point of migrating, not to have to reset things Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details.
If you want to revert to the original user settings, create an new admin user account. That'll use the default user setup.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Migration from old macbook air to new macbook air...beware

Although spent hours on the phone with Apple and bought necessary cables, they were not able to get migration assistant to work using ethernet.
You can't use firewire as new macbook air doesn't have it. You can use thunderbold as old macbook air doesn't have it.
Finally I was told to use Time Machine. After connecting old macbook air backup to new macbook air and using migration assistant, I got a message saying (essentially) 'you can use this from an old mac'. Spent more time on the phone with Senior tech support. They had no clue.
Finally called the store. Genius said, you can't migrate from old macbook air with Snow Leopard to new macbook air with Lion. You must upgrade old macbook air to Lion first.
GEEZ, do you think someone at tech support might have mentioned that DAYS ago?

    That is bad info.
The MBA that I am using right now used a TM backup from my old MBP, which was running Snow Leopard. Absolutely no problems using Setup Assistant to import all the apps, data, user settings. The session performed flawlessly, and took about an hour to move everything.
If at all possible, use Setup Assitant, rather than Migration Assistant. The transition will be seamless.

Which MBA, which printer? Printer incl driver properly installed? Printed test page (yes, THE test page, not something else) and it looks okay?

  • Documents from old MacBook to new MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro, I am trying to get documents from old MacBook to new.  Pages will not open them, saying I must first save to Pages 09.  How do I do this?  Thanks!

I assume that your old documents were created with Pages 08 or earlier.  Documents created with these versions of Pages will not open in the new Pages 5.0.1.  However, they will open in Pages 09 and (if you want to use Pages 5.0.1 - not a lot of people like it compared with 09) once saved from 09 can be opened by 5.0.1.
The best option is to buy a copy of iWorks 09 (Amazon, e-bay) and install that.
A work around is to export your documents from the old version of Pages (if you still have access to it) in Word format.  These WILL open in Pages 5.0.1.  HOWEVER, chances are it will affect the layout of the documents doing it this way.
    Hope this is useful.

  • Migrating from old MBP to new

I've just purchased a new MBP 17" i7 to replace my 2008 MBP 15". When I got my 2008 version, I just used the Firewire 800 to move all of my stuff from my iMac to my MBP. Spent a few minutes fixing some passwords, and that was that. Probably took around an hour.
So, I haven't migrated between Macs for a couple of years, and I want to find out what the best way to proceed. I use Time Machine to back up my computer, and have all of my iTunes media files on a portable 1TB hard drive (I've got thousands of songs in Apple Lossless). So here are my questions:
    1. Should I migrate from my old to new via Firewire? Or is it best to restore from Time Machine?
    2. Will Time Machine "start over." Will I lose 2 years of incremental backups? It's nice to know I can go digging back a couple of years to find that file I shouldn't have erased. Also, every once in a while a piece of music gets corrupted, and I've got to get it replaced by an older saved version.
    3. This might not be the right place, but will I be able to point iTunes on the new MBP to my media files? I'm convinced I can, but I'm not sure.
I'm going to wait a few days to do the migration, because I want to do this right. A few years ago, I did it wrong and lost years of photos, of which 90% were lost forever.

+Setup Assistant+ has been greatly improved for Snow Leopard. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    1. Should I migrate from my old to new via Firewire? Or is it best to restore from Time Machine?
Makes little difference. It's a bit easier from Time Machine, since you don't have to start up the old Mac in Target Disk mode and make the connection, but otherwise it makes no difference (assuming you didn't exclude anything important from Time Machine).
    2. Will Time Machine "start over."
    As William says, yes.
Will I lose 2 years of incremental backups?
Depends on how much space is on your Time Machine drive.
It's nice to know I can go digging back a couple of years to find that file I shouldn't have erased. Also, every once in a while a piece of music gets corrupted, and I've got to get it replaced by an older saved version.
Yup, absolutely. If you keep the old drive "on the shelf" you can always display and restore from it via the +*Browse ...+ option, per #17 in the FAQ.
Or, if you get a new, larger drive, you can copy the existing backups to it, and continue backing-up to the same set of backups. See #18 in the FAQ. If you do that, when the first backup of the new Mac starts, you'll get the prompt in #B5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    3. This might not be the right place, but will I be able to point iTunes on the new MBP to my media files? I'm convinced I can, but I'm not sure.
Yup. Just hold down the Option key while starting iTunes; you get a prompt to Create a library or Choose an existing one.
I'm going to wait a few days to do the migration, because I want to do this right. A few years ago, I did it wrong and lost years of photos, of which 90% were lost forever.
I'd recommend against that. +Setup Assistant+ runs immediately when you first boot the new Mac up; if you take all the defaults, it will move everything from the old Mac (or backups) except OSX. No temporary user profile, no setting-up communications, etc.
If you're nervous about losing things, and don't have secondary backups, do your final Time Machine backup of the old Mac, and turn it off. Use the backups to transfer your data, so the old Mac won't be involved at all.

I am changing to iCloud on my iMac, MacBook Air and my iPhone. My iMac and MacBook both moved over to iCloud but my iPhone when I go to Settings and click on iCloud it shows my Mail setting turned Off. When I turn it on it wants me to create a new email address to turn on iCloud Mail. I already have to "me" accounts plus another email address and don't want to create another one. I don't understand why it's asking me to do this on my iPhone but didn't ask on my iMac or MacBook and is there a way around creating another @me.com email address?

  • I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help

I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help says File >Library >Export playlist and choose XML, or to save a copy of all your playlists, File > Library > Export Library, "the Exported info is saved in XML format."  Then it says, "to import an iTunes playlist, File > Library > Import Playlist".  Now I am assuming I do that import part on the Air, but when I try it doesn't recognize anything that can be imported - what am I missing??? Aside from a clue...

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion!  "you need to copy that file to your new computer..."  Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export.  Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)?  Copy it to and from a thumb drive?  But then place the file where?  And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?  Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

I suggest that you try to repair the phone software using PC Companion..
Before repairing your device you may want to backup your information first. Check out this topic for more information on how to.

Is this happing because the external is formatted to PC and not mac?
    Yes that is correct.
Will I need to get a mac external hard drive if I wish to continue to save my documents like this?
If you no longer use a PC you could format this drive for the Mac. However be aware that formatting a drive will erase all the data on it. So you would need someplace to copy the data off this drive to while you did the re-format and then you could copy the data back.
You could get another drive, format it for the Mac and copy the data to it. Then re-format the original drive and use it as a backup drive. Always good to have backups.
Post back with the drive type and size of the current drive, if you are doing backups now and how and if you still need to access this drive from a PC.
