HT4428 Apple tv was working but now says it requires HDCP for playback.  Nothing was changed.

We are having a terrible time with Apple TV.  Videos will play for only a few seconds then pause and won't start  again.  Now  we have a message that HDCP is required for playback and Nothing has changed.  Really starting to hate this.  Any suggestions on  how to make Apple TV work as advertised?

I too had the same problem on our ATV 3rd gen, no hardware configuration was changed for several months and worked beautifully, just since we noticed there is an extra app of itunes festival and all my DRM contents including MLB TV are all unplayable. Tried to restart the ATV and the TV, buying a new hdmi cable from applestore, restarting router, nothing worked.
Strongly considering asking for refund.

  • When I try to play stuff I get a message saying I require HDCP for playback! what's that?

So disappointed with Apple TV, just bought it and it won't work, I can use YouTube on the tv, but not from my iPad.
I can't play videos from iPad as it keeps telling me that I require a HDCP for play back.  I have a top of the range HDTV set up.
Also, it only works when my iTunes is on my computer.  I have set it up as by the instructions.

HDCP is a copy protection protocol. Content that contains HDCP protection requires that all devices are HDCP compliant, if your TV isn't compliant or isn't telling the iPad that it is compliant the movie won't play.

If you mean it will only play content from your library when iTunes is running, then that is quite normal, you wouldn't expect the Apple TV to be able to read a library that isn't turned on would you.

OK, I just got off of the phone with Apple and still no joy. They had me try a few things that did not work, then told me to Archive and Install, which did not either. Anyway, thanks for the additional help very note worthy, but still no joy. Also an email to iTunes Support took me here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93061
I have a Users/Shared folder but since the files we are talking about are invisible, I can see how it is structured.
And by the way I tried this one
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3577004#3577004
and it did not work. However, when I install a fresh copy of Tiger on the external it did authorize the computer and was able to play the downloads. But coping the invisible file to my boot drive was not successful. But , like I said the music did play when I started up from the external. So I guess that may be my only solution, unless someone can tell what the correct directory is and where it for iTunes downloads.

  • This content requires hdcp for playback.  so I paid $100 for it and now they stop it from working?

I have an atv 2, my tv uses componet, I have used it to rent and watch movies on it for a year at least but now it says this content requires hdcp for playback.  so I paid $100 for it and now they stop it from working?
I also have the first atv, I get the same message

lol, I had to go look at the back of that, I've been using it so long with componet. I started getting the hdcp message a few months ago on it. been using it for years with componet now I cant.  what I meNt on the AT2 is that when I bought it, I was able to use it, rent moves, etc. since I got it using an adaptor because of my tv. It just recently was rendered incapable along with the componet output on the AT1.
My tv is a 65"  Hitachi rear projection,  with no hdmi. It's old, but still has a great picture

  • Apple TV not working - content requires HDCP for playback

Hello, I am at home sick and thought I'd watch a movie through my Apple TV, which I haven't used for about a month. Rented one, but when I went to play it got the error message "This content requires HDCP for playback." I have changed nothing since using it last. None of my previously downloaded shows will work either. Have spent the last hour and a half plugging, unplugging, updating software on my TV (while feeling like absolute rubbish) to try and fix it. I do not have a spare HDMI cable but can't believe this is the problem when it has previously been working FINE. I checked about doing an Apple TV software update but it was already on auto update and is up to date. I suspect this might be the problem - it's done some stupid update and wrecked everything. Apple support can't take my call till tomorrow afternoon and I am way too frustrated to be able to wait till then. I'm too sick to go to the shops to buy a cable and don't think I should have to anyway. Can anyone please help me? This is RIDICULOUS! I just want to watch a movie

Thankyou Rudegar... I'll try a new cable but I really don't understand how any of it could've suddenly broken... it hasn't been touched. Very annoying

  • Been watching HD TV shows on Apple TV for a month with my 1080i TV. Tonight getting error on TV, "This content requires HDCP for playback". All other media from remote desktop working OK, including 720p movie.  WI-FI network running normal. Help?

Been watching HD TV shows over home WI-FI from remote desktop using Apple TV for a month with my 1080i TV. Tonight getting error on TV, even on recently watched shows, "This content requires HDCP for playback. Either your HDMI cable isn't properly connected, or your HDMI connection doesn't support HDCP.  Please reconnect the HDMI cable from your Apple TV to your HDTV and try again". All other media from remote desktop working OK, including 720p movie.  WI-FI network running normal at about 4.7 mB/sec.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

  • I got an alert saying "Requires HDCP for playback. HDCP is not supported by your HDMI connection

I got an alert saying "Requires HDCP for playback. HDCP is not supported by your HDMI connection

The same problem here. It's been great to stream TV direct from my Ipad to my 46" and even streaming movies from my Imac. Everything was top notch! But suddenly nothing works. I get to see maybe about 3 sec and then it stops telling me that "The content needs HDCP". But it worked since i bought it in June until now. Really tried eveything with chaningig inputs, chaning output res, cables, update my router. Still nothing... But when i plug it in a smaller and a cheap LCD 22" from LG it seems to work??? Why did it suddenly crash on my big tv that supports hdcp, and it obviously worked for 4 months?? :-(

  • I keep getting "This content requires HDCP for playback" with my new Apple TV 3.

I keep getting "This content requires HDCP for playback" with my new Apple TV 3. I've returned one and got a new one. I've turned everything on and off. I've upgraded my bandwith. I've tried using different HDMI ports. Nothing is working.
Sometimes a movie will start to play for about 3-5 seconds and then freeze. My music plays fine as well as other videos that are not HD.
This has been going on for 3 weeks now and Apple Support and Genius Bar couldn't help.
Would appreciate any other solutions folks came up with.
    Thanks.

Thanks. I'll try to get a new HDMI cable, but that ****** me off since I bought the one I had from Apple thinking I'd avoid any issues like this.
I've also never had a movie play and have also tried Reset.
Since the movie starts to play for a few seconds, I'm assuming it is not my TV.
    Thanks!

  • This content requires HDCP for playback problem! Apple TV2

Owned Apple TV for two weeks. Two weeks ago, everything was fine for films already in my iTunes library.
This week, when selecting play on a movie, I get the message 'This content requires HDCP for playback problem' inconsistently. Some vids work, some don't. Then they do then they don't! I have tried on a Samsung TV and a Sony Bravia? Same for both!
How do I resolve this. I have tried different HDMI ports, turned Apple TV 2 off and on. Tried different cables (Although my HDMI cable is the one I purchased from Apple).
Any suggestions? Is it something Apple need to fix? This is kinda embarrassing when I tell friends how good Apple TV is, get them round to watch a movie and inconsistently get this.
    Many Thanks for any help
    Dave.

I too sadly have this handshaking issue. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. Day one buyer for ATV2. Worked all of about two days in terms of streaming HD content from either my MAC or netflix. About the third time i tried to stream HD content from Netflix or Blu Ray digital copies from my Mac, I get the HDCP compliance message stating my display is not authorized.
I have tried every concievable combination of unplugging and rebooting of TV (Samsung 2005 DLP), ATV2, and HDMI switcher (Monoprice) and nothing will work. My DirecTV HD-DVR works like a charm. If I rent an HD pay per view from DirecTV, no problem. If I rent an HD movie on iTunes, won't display it due to the HDCP issue. I've NOT ONCE had an issue with my DirecTV HDDVR having an HDCP compliance issue and of course its connected to my TV via HDMI thru my monoprice HDMI four port switch.
I guess the only other thing I could try is exchanging the unit itself. But everything else works as advertised. It feels like this is just a software issue that needs to be patched, and fast.

  • How can I fix apple tv error "this content requires hdcp for playback"

how can I fix apple tv error "this content requires hdcp for playback" I've done everything suggested in troubleshooting and still my apple tv don't work.  I'm thinking on returning it, since it doesn't work.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
    Try another HDMI cable.
Make sure your TV supports HDCP
Try the Apple TV with another TV

  • HT204291 All of a sudden, my Apple TV requires HDCP for playback. It is directly connected to my HDTV and I never had any problems so far. Apple TV  also refuses to play movies rented from iTunes. What's going on?

Why does Apple TV suddenly requite HDCP for playback?
No mirroring possible, it even refuses to play films rented from iTunes.
Apple TV linked directly to HDTV via hdmi cable?

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.

  • I have a paid mobile me account, idisk was working but now am getting an error message saying that the account doesn't exist.  Can I reset the account on idisk?

I have a paid mobile me account and did have idisk working.  Now when I click on it I am being told that the account doesn't exist or is currently unavailable.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Solution: No. Idea: Yes. A lot of "funny" things are supposed to happen while Apple moves MobileMe accounts to the new data center which will run iCloud. Maybe that's related....
