HT4436 question re: find my iPhone

My daughter and I have phones that are linked, we share an iCloud acct which is now full....if I put my phone on my own iCloud acct can our phones still be linked as to use the Find my iPhone app???? I am technically challenged...

Welcome to the Apple community.
You do not need to use the same Apple ID in order to use find my phone.
You can log in to find my phone on any device using the correct details and locate any devices using that Apple ID that have find my phone enabled and are switched on and connected to a network.

  • Questions on "Find my iPhone" app

I see there are a numerous amount of threads on lost/stolen iphones.
My phone has been stolen and I have a few questions about tracking it that havent been answered so far.
(Note that my iphone did not have an internet data plan on it. I used it only with wi-fi in all / most of the places I used to go.)
1.)If the thief deletes teh 'find my iphone' app, will I still be able to track it? (They would have been able to access the phone when it was stolen since I did not have a password on it. I am thinking they may have deleted this app first.)
2.)If they turn off the location services, then I won't be able to track them either right? (This is a possibility, but I find it hard to believe that they will use the iphone without connecting it to the net.)
3.)I set a remote lock on the phone. I beleieve if the password is entered wrong 10 times the phone will wipe. Will I still be able to track it afetr ot has been wiped like this? (If I choose to wipe it from www.icloud.com then I won't be able to track it any longer.)
4.)How easy is it to crack the password I set? I don't mean by guessing. I mean, can they take the phone to an 'iphone blackmarket specialist' who can bypass / reset the remote lock I put on it?
5.) How long does the find my iphone app keep a log of the iphone? If I do not locate it, and log into www.icloud.com one year later to see if i can find it now, would I still see it on 'my devices?" Or will it dissappear due to inactivity?
Getting an iphone stolen is not very nice. It's crushing. Investigate in a number of location based apps now.
    Thanks

The reality is this, if you have not located your phone by now, you can most likely kiss it good-by. Most thieves are well aware that when they steal an iPhone, to immediatelly turn the phone off...this defeats Find My Phone. Once off, they restore it as a new device in iTunes and slap it on eBay or Craigslist.
Change all the passwords you ever used on the phone: email, iTunes, etc. Report to the police & your carrier.

  • Question Regarding "Find My iPhone" App (Used On Macbook Pro)

    Here's what I lost:
    - iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009)
    - The iPod SHOULD be in my house.
Here's what I'm trying to find my iPod with:
    - "Find My iPhone" App on iTunes
    - MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) My laptop was also purchased in August of 2009, and my software is up to date.
Here's my main question: Is it possible to use the "Find My iPhone" App on my computer to help me find my missing iPod if I DO NOT have the "Find My iPhone" App on my iPod? I would assume that the answer to my question would be "no", but I'm not very familiar with apps.

You need to pay to update the OSX on your Mac.
    Mountain Lion (OSX 10.7.x) requires
    General Requirements
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    Supported Models
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Also since you said you have iPod Touch 8BG (I got the iPod in August of 2009), that iPod is a 2G iPod touch that does not Support iCloud. However, if you previously subscribed to the paid MobileMe you might be able to find it but since you can;t log into iCloud you can't do that.
Sorry but you are out of luck finding your 2G iPod except the old fashioned way, lokk for it,.

  • Find My iPhone service for Auckland, New Zealand

    Hi,
I was wondering if there is any Apple iPhone user from Auckland, New Zealand? I mean I got some serious question for Find My iPhone service on MobileMe.
The thing is when I inserted Vodafone NZ SIM, the Find my iPhone shows me closer to my location but not accurate, when I actually inserted 2Degrees it shows me way North of my current location approx more than 5KM away and Google Maps the current location is way wrong, it's an urban area anyway. The thing is it actually works really well in Auckland city, so if you lost you phone in an urban area you might as well tries to forget it?
All and all, does Find My iPhone service relies on Telco service?

0_o What about TomTom App compared to TomTom GPS Device? Do they rely on Cell Towers too? I'm sorry this is off topic but TomTom App sure look like a nice addon for my app.
Car navigation apps use only GPS. They have to work in areas with no cell phone coverage. It takes longer to get the initial location, but the GPS is left on, since they are normally getting power from the car. The iPhone's built-in map app just turns on GPS when needed, to save power, so faster startup is important.
And back on topic, let's said if I lost my iPhone and since the signal location is not accurate do I actually lose my iPhone for good?
You can end a message and sound to it, so someone might find and return it. It won't help in the case of a thief, of course.
And since this is no good to me I wonder if MobileMe service is really worth it at all.
It's not worth it for just the Find My iPhone function (unless you frequently misplace things), but if you have a Mac, it's other functions can be worth the cost.

  • Iphone 5s Lost/Stolen - Questions about Find my Phone on ios7

OK, I have done something very stupid but I need some advice anyway, will likely not ever get my phone back but I'm curious as to how it works.
    1) I bought an unlocked iPhone 5s for travel.
    2) I installed "find my phone" before leaving Canada
    3) I came to China to live for 6 months and I inserted a China Unicom SIM card.
    4) I purchased a cell phone plan that has basically no data
    5) I then went into my settings and turned off Cellular Data for all apps (this was the stupid thing that I did without thinking).
Therefore, find my phone is off in Cellular Data.  Last night my phone was lost and/or stolen.  I immediately tried to use "find my phone."  As soon as it said my device was offline I realized what I had done and how stupid it was. I did still set the lock and send it a messages so if for some reason it comes online it will be locked, but....here are my questions:
    1) Will "find my phone" work over Wifi automatically if Cellular Data is off?
    2) If my phone IS in the hands of a thief, is this even helpful?  Could a thief just pop out my SIM card, insert their SIM card, somehow bypass my fingerprint/passcode (I know there are hacks for that) and then just turn off / disable Find My Phone?  Because if they put in their SIM card and use 3G, but haven't started using Wifi yet, then "find my phone" won't be activated yet, correct?
    3) So is my only hope to leave a thief with a worthless brick that they take the phone somewhere and try to use it on Wifi to set it up?  IF they insert a new SIM and manage to hack my passcode, BUT they fail to deactivate "find my phone" and then they join a wireless network, would my phone immediately lock

Use Find My iPhone to track iPhone only if the following conditions are met:
    1. Find My iPhone is ON and activated.
    2. iPhone has Internet connection.
    3. iPhone is not switched OFF.

  • I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. Whenever I try to use it, it always says "All Devices Offline." This is regardless of whether I am in a good Wi-Fi zone or not.  I like to use Find My iPhone to remotely track my battery charging status whenever my phone is charging in a different room. That's been really handy, which is why I really need to get this fixed. No matter what computer I use, the problem is always the same.
My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device, especially considering the bad things I've heard about iOS 8.
    Feedback would be welcome ASAP.

You don't need to update to iOS 8 to use Find My iPhone.  If you haven't already tried, go to Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn it off, then reset your phone (hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release).  After it restarts, turn Find My iPhone back on and see if it works properly now.

  • I need someone to answer a  few Find my Iphone App questions?

I lost my phone overseas...I got too drunk and lost it at some bar..I thought I was lucky because I had signed up for the find my iphone app on the ICloud. When I tried to locate my Iphone through the services, It couldn't find my Iphone because it was "OFFLINE" I assume it was because it was out of battery, making it impossible to find it now.
So I requested that my phone be put it in "lost mode", but since it's currently offline, it's Pending! I also added a contact number and a 50$ reward for the return of my phone, so the next time my phone is turned on and connects to the internet, it will lock and the stranger using my phone won't be able to get in to it and steal my info right?...But, seeing as my time is almost up being overseas, it seems very unlikely I'll be getting my phone back. So I might have to get a new phone!
My Question is, if I click on "Erase Iphone" now, it will erase all the data on my phone, And it won't be able to be tracked anymore, that's all fine and good. But the thing is, since my phone is currently off line, it's currently a pending action and won't erase the data unless it's turned on and connected to the internet again....SO, if I were to get a New Iphone, (I am eligible to uprgrade) it would be risky right? Because if I get a new Iphone and get all comfy with a new iphone, and someone turns on my old IPhone, the "Erase Iphone" request will commence and it will delete all the data on my old iphone as well as my NEW iphone right?
Cause I will be using the same Apple ID for my new Iphone! I can only assume that this is how it works....Apple isn't very clear on how stuff like that works.
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

You don't need to worry.  It won't delete anything from iCloud or your new phone, it will only erase the data on the lost phone, and that will only happen if it ever goes online again.

  • I've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?

i've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?
is it possible to change imei number?
i've tried for so many times n still the phone is offline so i've set it to offline mode with my message but it never shows the last location why?

If the device is found, nobody can use it without knowing your Apple ID and password.
The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
    Erase your device
    Reactivate and use your device
This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My iPhone turned on, andremember your Apple ID and password.
What steps should I take if I misplace my device?
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s just lost or you think it may have been stolen—you should put it into Lost Mode immediately using Find My iPhone.
Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.
For more information, read what to do if your device is lost or stolen.

  • Lost/stolen iPod touch!... Data privacy/Find my iPhone questions

Recently, I lost my iPod in public and believe it may have been grabbed by someone else. I know this because I checked Gmail and saw an access to my account from an IP address in the same location where I lost it, but far after I left the place. (at my college)
So, I immediately went onto Find My iPhone (hereafter "FMI"), and issued a remote wipe and a message. However, even now, two days later, FMI still shows "pending" for everything. This indicates to me that the device has not been powered on anytime in such a way that would have had it check in with FMI.
I did not have any on-device lock (unfortunately) so someone could have quickly started reading through information on the device, so I've already taken appropriate precautions. However, I do have a couple questions:
    1. If someone stole the device with the intent to keep it, and simply immediately attached it to a computer and performed a Restore on it, would this not destroy its link to FMI and thus cause the behavior I'm witnessing? (It's of course always possible it was turned into a lost-and-found desk or something, and I'm having that checked on, but no success yet. There are several desks on the campus and they have to check all of them manually...)
    2. In a similar fashion, would someone be able to simply go in and shut off the link to MobileMe, or would they need my password to do that? (e.g. go into Settings and remove the MobileMe account from the mail accounts section, thus disabling FMI). If they can do this without my Apple password, wouldn't this also make the device "invisible" to FMI?
For both of the above, I have to assume that the person did this while not in range of any known Wifi network. Since the iPod touch doesn't have a persistent connection unless it's near known Wifi networks, a person could easily steal the device, check that it works (which is why I saw the Gmail access), take it home and never register it to their own Wifi network until after they've disabled whatever would cause the device to react to FMI.
And, if the second question is true, then by disabling FMI they'd also be able to retain access to my personal information on the device, even though I issued the wipe command. (again, if they removed the MobileMe account PRIOR to connecting to their own Wifi with it)
Losing the device is tough, but I'm even more concerned about the idea that someone could still be accessing my personal data even though I issued the remote wipe command. (If they did a Restore, that's obviously not the case, but if they were able to remove the MobileMe account, it would be!)
I'd appreciate any advice anyone has about the more in-depth workings of this system...
    Thanks in advance,
    FM

    - If they restored your iPod that will erase the FMI from the iPod.
    - To my knowledge, they can just delete you MobileMe mail account from the Ipod (unless you set restrictions to prevent changing mail accounts) since that will delete the FMI
    - As you found out, the FMI feature has a lot of loopholes.

  • "Find My iPhone"-Question

I had my iTouch stolen out of my buddy's car about 6 months ago at a random highschool party, and i hadn't thought twice about the "Find My iPhone" service. However, earlier today I happen to log onto an old AOL email account that i haven't used in a long time (this particuar account was enabled in my mail app on my iTouch); Upon investigating the "sent" folder in the email, I came across several sent messages that were replies to craigslist post for woman seeking men, clearly appearent that the dialogue used came straight from a highschooler's mouth, and they all were post on craigslist in my town, with the signature at the bottom reading "sent from my iPod". I did a little research and logged onto the iCloud website to check "Find My Iphone application" that i just recently set up for my iPad. In that fore-head slapping moment, I saw that I did infact set up the "Find My iPhone" application on the iTouch long before it was stolen; the device is in the list right behind my Mac and iPad, but doesn't seem to be on, or isn't connected to Wi-Fi. I am almost certain that the theif hasn't reset the touch yet because he was accessing my email to compose emails directly from the touch. The last email was sent around a month ago because without even knowing, also around a month ago, I changed all the passwords to all of my email adresses, so I cannot tell if he reset it or not. My question is, will the iTouch still show up as a traceable option (along with my Mac and Ipad) in iCloud even if the theif has done a factory reset on it? Or even though he reset it, it will always so up as an option on that app in iCloud?
Thanks to anyone who can throw in their two-cents!

If he (I assume he from what you said were the Craigslist's posts) reset the iPod to factory settings, the Find My iPhone function will no longer work.  Otherwise, it will only work when the iPod is connected to a wi-fi source, which should happen at some point if the thief is using it.  You can send a message, you can lock it, but once restored to factory settings it's Game Over.

  • Lost iphone without find my iphone turned on. A Few questions

Somebody slipped their hand and took my iphone from my pocket
    1. I had a 4 digit passcode on my iphone. Will the thieve be able to access any of my data?
    2. Find my iphone was turned off. is there any way apple support can remotely wipe my iphone for me?
    3. will they be able to restore the iphone and use it as their own?

  • I understand many find my iphone app users have this question... I am trying to find the last location of my Iphone before it went off line... The information contained in the app is misleading.. does anyone have advice?

The information in the app (find my iphone) is misleading. Italing that your device will show its last location for up to 24 hours...

Even if it does show the last location, that is of little value, once the iPhone is off or restored to factory settings it is untrackable.  It is best to inform your carrier immediately with the IMEI number so they can blacklist the iPhone, if they will provide that service.  Some do, some don't.  Apple will not assist other than maintaining their own records of lost/stolen iPhones.

  • Finding My iphone app question?

Is there a way, within the Find My Iphone app to "Look Back" at a previous location sight rather than the current one that is being displayed.
For example at 10:30 it says my phone was at the corner of broadway and main st, yet i want to know where the phone was at 10 o'clock or sowhen I previously looked for it?  Can anyone help or know if this is possible to do, please let me know how, thanks....
    Phil

You can purchases apps from the app store that will periodically email you the devices location. They are not that useful for an iPod since for emailing the iPod has to be connected to the internet. They work well with phones since the phones have GPS and can send the email over cellular.

  • HT4436 How can I Find My iPhone from my iPad?

With only my iPad with me when I noticed I'd left my iPhone somewhere, I couldn't figure out how to log in to my iCloud account to Find my iPhone. Finally borrowed a computer, but there must be a way to log in with a browser on my iDevice. What am I missing (iCloud kept telling me to set up the account, no login page showed up)?

You cannot use iCloud.com from a mobile device. You need to download the "find my phone" app from the App Store. You can use this app on both your iPad on your iPhone.
