You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
Also, if you have iOS 6.1.6 yo have a 4G (has cameras). A 3G does not have cameras and can only go to 5.1.1 -

I am trying to download an app and keep getting this error message: "Could not sign in. An unknown error has occurred. I have tried shutting down and restarting. I've tried changing the password. I get the error message with free and not free apps. Any suggestions on how to fix?Reports are that this is a problem with the iTunes Store that they're working on. Some people have had success after signing out of their account and back in. If that doesn't work for you, wait a few hours or perhaps until tomorrow and by then they may have the problem sorted out.

You need to reinstall the App Store.

I have a problem with download a new app. While I bought iphone5, I take iphone to shopkeeper for download some app and videos that he used his Apple ID . That's t problem now.. Not all the time his ID is appearing but some times his Apple ID is appearing that time I can't download app, videos, songs.. So please guide me to remove that ID or how to solve that..

BabuCheck Settings/iTunes and AppStore/AppleID and make sure that your AppleID is filled in. If not , sign out and sign in with the correct info.
To make sure that no other apps or videos are on your device than the one you bought, set it up as new device, explained here: How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Content that is not bought with your ID can't be used on your phone, that's why his ID and password is asked when you try to use those apps downloaded in the store. -
Hi, I have just tried to download an app and my itunes has changed my country to Auckland, can this be changed without me entering my card details again.....why has itunes changed this without me doing it?, or is it a problem with io7? as all fine prior to upgrade.

When I tried to download an app that was 0.99 cents it asked me to answer some security question. I put in my password and the questions popped up( I don't remember ever giving an answer to these questions). After a numerous amount of try's it locked me out of my apple ID and said I can not buy anything until I get the questions right. I was wondering if there was any way for me to find them out, because there is no I forgot option to click on. If so how can I find them out?
You won't be able to change your rescue email address until you can answer 2 of your questions, you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

What do you do when trying to download an app from App Store and get message: "could not sign in, an unknown error has occurred."
Sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try again. -
I'm trying to download new apps and I keep getting a loading sign
I currently have PhotoShop installed, and it works great. But I've been trying to download other apps like Illustrator and Lightroom and I keep getting a loading sign, and nothing else happens. How do I fix this so I can download other apps from Creative Cloud?

Error unknown message when trying to download an app and logging in? Fix?
Is anyone else having this problem when trying to log into the app store or hitting the "install button" of the app and trying to log in? Is there anyway to fix it?? I haven't been able to download any apps on this macbook pro.
Also, I am able to log into itunes just fine. It is only when trying to log in the app store that I seem to be unable to proceed any further than typing my password. All the input information is correct.
