HT4527 error message:ITunes Music can't be copied because there isn't enough free space

I tried to copy Itune library from my previous MacBook pro to the new one (Itunes 10 to Itunes11). I used an external hard-drive. As soon as I drag the Itunes music folder into Music (new computer) I get the message"The item “iTunes Music” can’t be copied because there isn’t enough free space".  I checked and do have enough space! Thanks for helping!

I just ran into this issue moving around large VHD images. I found the cause to be local time machines backups. Time machine seems to keep backups on your local (i.e boot) drive by default, in addition to your nominated Time Machine drive. This is meant to be transparent and only consume free space, but clearly it's not smart enough to free the space when you actually need it.
If you launch the "System Information" utility, on the "Storage" tab you should see a large portion of your primary hard-disk consumed by "Backups".
To disable local time machine backups, run the folllowing at the terminal:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
This should immediately free up the space. If not, try running a Time Machine backup manually to kick it into gear. You may re-enable local Time Machine backups with the following:
    sudo tmutil enablelocal
Hope this helps.

Select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder (file menu ==> export) - see this user tip for export options - then be sure the card is not locked and in the finder verify available space and if it is adaquate drag that folder to it

  • "can't be copied because there isn't enough free space"

I am trying to transfer files to a USB stick that I've been using for ages. About halfway through it won't transfer any more files and says they "can't be copied because there isn't enough free space". USB stick is totally empty and the size of the files is much less than the capacity of the stick, so what's the problem?
I have freed up 6 GB on my hard drive (unused capacity now 79/500 GB) and have repaired disk permissons. Repaired USB stick, tried a different stick, turned it off & turned it back on again. I'm at a loss as to what to try next.
Also I could transfer the entire folder across, but then when I tried to get the files out of the folder directly onto the drive, the same thing happened. Also they all seem to be fine and I can access them on a PC which is why I need them on the stick.

  • Saving to shared folder on server: Item [...] can't be copied because there isn't enough free space – even though there is!

    Hi all,
I have a strange error with my mac mini mavericks/server setup. Everything is updated to the latest software. I have a promise pegasus R4 over thunderbolt connected as my data harddrive-raid and use my server as a filesharing setup (I also use other services such as webserver, timemachine, dns, open directory, vpn, messages, caching).
I have about 10 users connected to this server that authenticate through their respective user accounts on the server and are all in the same group. Recently users startet complaining about a disk full error showing up in finder (or any other program they use), when they tried saving stuff on a shared folder on the server. I am not really sure what this is. The strange thing is that the error is not consistent, meaning some users can save and others cant, even though they are all in the same group and that group has read and write privileges according to the file sharing settings. When I use finder to propagate the rights on the shared folder, sometimes that helps and all of the sudden the user can save his file again. Also I have found that the user can save very small files, but not larger files (>1mb). The harddisk containing the shared folder has still several TB free (its the promise pegasus R4) and I can save files on it from some other computers or from the server itself…
Basically I have no idea what is causing this and I don’t really found anything alarming in the logs so far. I would appreciate any kind of hint, how to come close to what is causing this.
    Thanks and all best

BUMP, anyone? I still have this problem...

  • IPod can't be synced because there's not enough free space?

One day I connected my iPod to iTunes and when I disconnected it when it said 'Ok to disconnect', when I turned on my iPod, all my songs and playlists disappeared.
In iTunes, it says that it can't be synced because there's not enough free space.
*My iPod mini has 4 GB space, and currently the songs in my iPod only take up 174.32 GB.*
Then it says in the message that 2.88 GB required and that there's only 52 MB left.
What is wrong with my iPod/iTunes? It's frustrating me so much already, you have no idea. Please, please help me, I'm already so desperate.

When you say restore it, do you mean restore the one in iTunes or restore my iPod itself? The press the circle button then press menu for a long time in my iPod? I already did that.
It says 174.32. I only have about 700 something songs because I tried deleting some to see if deleting some songs would help fix the problem but no. It's strange because before all my songs and playlists disappeared in my iPod, I even had more songs in my iPod than what I have in iTunes now.
About 15-30 minutes ago, I was able to put only about 9-10 songs in my iPod because it says it doesn't have enough free space. It's so strange, it really frustrates me.

  • I have IPhoto version 9.5.1. I cannot export pictures, the following message appears: "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library." What am I suppose to do? I have a Mac mini.

I have IPhoto version 9.5.1. I cannot export pictures since the following message appears: "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library." What am I suppose to do? I have a Mac mini which properly used can perform any reasonable task, the problem is I do not know what to do.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hmm... that was labelled:
    As a Test:
    In bold and all
    Try repair the main Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPod can't be synced  because there is not enough free space?

At first, my iPod couldn't be synced because 'playlists doesn't exist'(there's another forum about this and apparently this comment helped a lot of people...
"Click on your 'DEVICE' on the left in ITUNES,
click the music tab and where it says Sync Music, hit the all songs and playlist radio button.... worked for me, hope that helps...."
So I did just that, but then songs still won't go in my iPod because...
When I click device and go to the music tab, I clicked 'all songs and playlists' then clicked apply. This message shows up:'...cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (2.99 GB required, 51.2 MB available)'
By the way, my iPod's supposed to store 1,000 songs/4 GB, and at this moment, my iTunes has about 700-800 something songs, that only takes up about 2-3GB.
At the bottom part in device, it says this...
    Capacity - 3.77 GB
    Audio - 851 KB
    Other - 3.71 GB
    Free Space - 51.2 MB
I basically don't get it. Isn't it supposed to store 4 GB and more than 2-3 GB? I feel so stupid, but anyway...
Should I delete more songs or is there really something wrong? Before my songs disappeared in my iPod, all the songs could fit into it, even more than what I have in my iTunes now. What's wrong?

  • My Macbook won't boot up because there isn't enough free space for my start up disk. It's now stuck on a blue screen. How am I meant to delete files to free up space if I can't access the computer?

My Macbook won't boot up because there sin't enough free space to run the startup disk. My Macbook now won't go past the blue screen so exactly how am I meant to be able to delete files if I can't access the computer?

Do you have a bootable backup?
What operating system are you running? If OS X 10.6 or lower, boot from your original OS X DVD or a retail OS X DVD and then delete files as needed. Your goal should be to get to 10% of your disk capacity free.
If you have OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, you don't have many choices in recovery mode (boot holding the command and r keys down).
If you have a FireWire or Thunderbolt connection, you can try target disk mode with another mac.
If none of those work, perhaps your local Apple store can help with a bootable external drive.

  • IPod touch cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes Library

Hi, I have just transferred my whole iTunes library from my old computer to my new one and am trying to sync my iPod to the new one. However I get an error message saying "iPod touch cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes Library (additional 5.38GB required). I currently have 8.5GB free on my iPod so I don't understand why it cannot sync.

Hey Georgiarose94, If what's going on, is what I think it is, when you sync the information it's over written, it can take 2 to 3 times more space the get the info on your iPod, once it's there the info only occupies the space it needs. Kind if of like moving, when you first step in the room with boxes of stuff there's no room. But after you get everything put away all is well. If you haven't already, connect your iPod to your computer, from your iPod Summary page, go down to Options and check reduce bit rate to (select 128 kbps). (Wording maybe a little different). Will greatly reduce memory space needed on your iPod, and you really do not hear the difference in sound quality. Other option, go to music and select manual so you can pick which music you place on the iPod. You need to reduce by 5.38GB of information to finish your download. Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • The Ipad cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the ITunes library (6.55G required, 6.98G available)

The message is The Ipad cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the ITunes library (6.55G required, 6.98G available). which doesn't make sense as there is enough room according to the message

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Question I have a dilemma . I added a lot of songs in my iTunes now when I synced my ipod this message appear "Elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additiona

I addesd a lot of songs in my itunes, now when I synced my ipod this message appear "elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the itunes library (additional 382m is required). Then I uncheck a lot of song and synced my ipod again same message appeared. Do I need to buy a new ipod with more memories? Somebody told me to check apply after I unchecked some of the songs but I cannot find the word APPLY. please help I'm not a very technical person.

The Sync button becomes the Apply button, if you change the iPod's settings in iTunes.  If you are only unchecking songs in the iTunes music library, you click on the Sync button.
When you select the iPod in iTunes, you see the iPod's Summary screen on the main part of the iTunes window.  There is a checkbox there for Sync only checked songs.  Did you check that checkbox?  If you want iTunes to ignore the songs you unchecked when syncing your iPod, that setting needs to be enabled.  If you change that setting, you'll see the the Sync botton has changed to Apply.  Click Apply.
That method of unchecking songs works, but it may become annoying over time, as you need to uncheck more and more songs.  If you want advice on some other more convenient ways to make it work, you can post back.

    Hello pryan1012,
What this message means is that you have more music in your itunes library than there is free space in your ipod.
I had this same issue at one time. This is what helped me put my music on the ipod. I used manually manage.
Learn how to sync muisc here.

  • The iPad cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes librar

    Hi,
I know similar cases were posted here but I did not find something that matched my case:
Here is the message I got:
The iPad cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (1 MB required, 4.29 GB available).
Obviously I have 1M space if I have 4.29GB of space.
I do not have any music or photos
I just updated the current apps I have and did an synced several new apps with a total of about 500M (which is far less then the free ~4GB I have)
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Thank you

You have seem similar instances of this, but have you tried anything suggested in those discussions?  I would quit ITunes, reboot your computer, reset the iPad and then try again. I would also close all apps on the iPad before resetting the device. When you try the sync again, use a different USB port on your computer.
I Know this seems to be an no brainer, but make sure that you didn't accidentally select more content to sync than the iPad can hold
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
In order to reset your iPad, hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen after which time you can release the buttons and let the iPad start up.

  • IPhone" cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library

iPhone” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library

What do you do about it? Be more selective about what you're syncing to it. Don't try to sync your entire library, just what you actually want to take with you. If you want to take more with you than what you have room for, buy a phone with more storage capacity.
Alternately, you can have music automatically transcoded to a lower bitrate. Not in front of iTunes, so don't recall the exact wording. It takes much longer to sync the first time, but should consume much less space and you shouldn't take the time hit after the first full sync.

That message is telling you that you do not have enough stgorage on the iPod to accomodate all the media you are trying to sync to the iPod.
