HT4527 Transfer trouble - corrupted and unreadable? Really?

I'm trying to transfer my itunes to a new macbook from an old PC. I'm following the Apple online guide on how to do this. I've consolidated my library and everything seems to be in one place but when I get to part 2 step 4 (drag the my music folder over to the external hard drave) I get a message on my old laptop which says Cannot create or replace file : The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. The files don't seem to be either corrupted or unreadable because I can still play them all on my old PC. Any ideas?

  • Error: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

    This is driving me nuts.
I've had my 5th gen. iPod for over a year now, but just two days ago, when I plugged it in to my computer I received a message saying, "The iPod "name here" cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
To solve this problem, I tried using different USB ports, restarting my iPod, and reinstalling iTunes - all to no avail. I'd really like to avoid restoring my iPod, so I haven't tried that option yet. The iPod works fine outside of adding new music. Also, I ran chkdsk and got nothing from it.
I'm very sad about this. I love my iPod and I want to be able to put new music on it! Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the reply!
I downloaded the program and ran it, got to the point where it says I have errors that need to be fixed... but it appears I have to pay for the rest of the program to actually repair these errors. Is this incorrect?
If I do have to pay, then I'd like to look for an alternative... the program is $40; of course, that's cheaper than buying a new iPod, but I want to avoid that too.

  • \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo is corrupt and unreadable.

Everytime I connect my U2 ipod to my computer I keep getting updates everyday for my ipod (I have the 3.1 version) and itunes (5.0.1) AND I keep getting this "exclamation point" error message: The file or directory \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chksk utility. I can't find chksk utility...I found chsks.exe...it ran all tests and it's fine.
    What's going on here?

    Manon,
I really need someone's expertise on this
In that case Da Gopha's your go-to guy.
Have a look at this thread:
Da Gopha, "chkdsk errors are fixed by iPod Updater 2005-06-26", 10:01am Jul 20, 2005 CDT
You might want to post any follow-up questions there.
Also, most people have reported that version 3.1 firmware solves the problem so you should confirm that that's what you have on your iPod.
    Good Luck!
P.S. Also note that this is the

forum, not the best place to post a problem concerning a Windows computer. Something to keep in mind for the future.

  • Corrupt and unreadable

My ipod video will not save changes because it is "corrupt and unreadable."
Last time this happened my ipod wouldn't even open or play. I downloaded EphPod and I opened the program and it fixed it right away. Sigh of relief.
Now I can open the ipod both in EphPod and itunes, but I can not make changes or sync. I read a post earlier that someone did a reset after this happened (toggle lock button, press middle and menu at same time until restart) and they could only get 200 files from the thousands they already had, so I'm scared to reset. Ghasp of tension.
What can I do? Back up my music with EphPod and erase everything? What a shoddy product, you'd think microsoft could do better than this. Grumble of annoyance.

Itunes will not open my ipod now. EphPod is letting me edit music, but now there are no videos on my ipod, just music listings under the "Videos" menu. So my hours of downloading Kids in the Hall and converting it was pointless as far as I can see. Lovely. It is getting to the point where I think I will have to back up everything else and erase the ipod. Not that I have room to back it up on my small computer. Thanks Apple!
_This is really p*ssing me off. Does anyone have any suggestions?_

  • Corrupted and Unreadable Ipod

    Hi there all,
I just connected my 20G Ipod W/clickwheel to my laptop and I received this popup:
The Ipod (insert name) cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Can anyone please give me a suggestion as to what I shold do?
    Thanks everyone.

    hmmmmmm.
it might be possible to get it back working again by running a chkdsk over it:

  • Ipod cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I have recently had to reload windows xp home edition on my computer and wanted to connect my ipod to load some new music. As it was a new installation the ipod was not recognised. I loaded to latest version of itunes that I have just downloaded and was asked whether I wanted to sync my ipod with this computer in which case I would lose everything that was on the ipod. I choose yes to sync to the new computer but got the error message "the ipod "ipod" cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I simply recharged the ipod and continued to use it for a day but then it just ran through the tracks without playing anything until it came to the end of an album and returned to the main menu.
As I cannot play anything I wanted to restore and reload but cant. Could anyone offer any help ? Thanks

I have just managed to connect my ipod through itunes to restore it. However when I tried to connect it to the wall socket to complete the update nothing happens. I have checked the fuse in the plug and that is okay, but the ipod does nothing, not even a light on the display when connected. It seems to have locked up. If I hold it close to my ear I can hear a gentle hum. Also the ipod is not showing up in windows explorer.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks

  • Ipod cannot be synced. File or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

After I tried reconnecting my ipod to my computer, the message "The iPod cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." popped up in iTunes and it wouldn't let me access any of the songs on my ipod. I ejected it and checked the ipod, and all of my songs were still on there, but whenever I try and connect it to iTunes the same message pops up and when I go to the music list, nothing is there, though it states 3 GBs of space is being taken up (the amount of space my songs use).
I figured the problem might lay in iTunes and not my iPod, but while there was a problem and I did manage to fix it, the newly downloaded iTunes still gave me the same message as before.
I figure I could try reformatting the iPod, since it looks like that might solve the problem, but I don't have any of the songs on my iPod backed up, so I was hoping someone might be able to offer another solution. =/
*To sum things up: songs are still on my iPod and I can listen to them after ejecting, but syncing up to iTunes is no longer possible (so no new music ;_; ). Problem most likely isn't with iTunes and I'd prefer not to reformat the iPod.*

  • Corrupted and unreadable file

    Hi There,
I need some help with iTunes. Yesterday I went to use iTunes and instead of opening, I got something that said,*"The iTunes application could not be opened. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."*
So I'm still unable to open it. I even tried to download the latest version of itunes last night, but I'm still getting the same thing. HELP! Thanks in advance.
    Heather M.

I haven't seen that one, I would start with a disk check.
Open my computer and right click on your c: drive. Select Properties>>Tools>>error checking.
If that finds an fixes a problem it may be necessary to do a repair install of iTunes.
    Please report back with results.

  • File or directory is corrupt and unreadable - Updates

Every time I connect my U2 ipod to my computer...there is an update for my ipod and itunes EVERY DAY and I get an "exclamation" point with the following error message: The file or directory iPod\_Control\Device\SysInfo is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chksk utility. I did that. It happened quick. I went to chksk.exe and all tests were good.
I have the 3.1 version on my ipod and 5.0.1 on itunes...what's wrong?

I updated my ipod to 3.1 and itunes to 5.0.1 and the problem is gone...this advice was given to me in the Apple Computer Forum...I posted there by mistake! This way could be softer because you will not lose anything...I just wanted you all to know there is another solution. Thank You.

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 'C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable'?

    Hi,
Most of my family and i are and have been Mac/Apple enthusiasts for a while, but recently i have been using Windows 7 via bootcamp for certain software and such. Windows was working fine until today, when i started my MacBook Pro 13" computer (Mid 2010) and did the usual thing to get into windows (Hold Alt/Option key while starting and running windows from there) the normal startup screen was not displayed, but there was simply a 'loaidng files' bar at the bottom. after the bar had finished loading, it went straight to disk repair. As soon as the disk repair came up, a message box saying something along the lines of '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable.' (there was something before C:/, but i cannot remember exactly what was said). At this point, i could do absolutely nothing but close the message for it to come up again (note that the disk repair was still going on behing this message. (this same thing happens every time i start Windows via bootcamp)
After a while of searching, i found nothing that i thought would help me with the exception of running the Windows 7 Disc and running a system repair. I selected the version to run, then selected the option that runs with the settings of the last time it ran correctly. All seemed fine untill i got to the screen where it ask wether to install (repair and help buttons in the bottom left corner), at which point i clicked on the repair option. A screen saying it was looking for Windows intallations came and went and the repair screen came up and the same message '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable' was displayed.
Please help, i can probably fully reinstall Windows 7 via bootcamp and keep all of the documents/files i had, but that would mean i would have to get and reinstall ALL of the programs i had on there, and that would take me almost two full days of fidling around with discs and downloads, let alone the internet usage that would use for the digital versions i bought.
is there a way around this reinstall? Please help.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rylando

Unless you have a backup already you will not be able to save anything, not data files or applications. Of course you will also need to restore the Mac hard drive to as it was prior to the Boot Camp (Windows) partition being created, this must be done with Boot Camp, not Disk Utility. Then reinstall Windows and all applications.
All files currently in the Windows partition will be erased.

  • "This ipod cannot be updated. The files are corrupted and unreadable"

This message now appears when I connect my ipod to itunes....
"This ipod cannot be updated. The files are corrupted and unreadable"
The ipod still works and charges, but it will no longer let me add new files to it. The contents of my ipod are still displayed as usual on itunes, so it obviously is reading it to some degree. It advises me to run a chkdsk utility, but I have no idea how to do this.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
    Many thanks

If your iPod is corrupt then you have no choice but to restore it.
Before you do that, you may have some success getting the music off it and onto your hard drive again.
    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.

  • My ipod is corrupt and unreadable?!

Whenever i try to sync my ipod, initially i get an error message saying:
Ipod cant be synced, the file / disc is corrupt and unreadable...
It continues to sync a couple of tracks, before again coming up with a message saying it cant be updated as it is corrupt and unreadable.
I have updated my software, and this has been happening for a few weeks so far. Ive also tried restoring my ipod, but the error message comes up again, something about "Ipod cannot be restored as file is corrupt etc"
Its a video ipod, if that makes any difference.
    What to do?!

    Try this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
If that doesn't work, and it still says it is corrupt, right click on your iPod in My Computer or Device Manager, select disk management and then format your iPod (FAT32, not a quick format). After that Restore it in iTunes.
