HT4528 iPhone 5 - German Exchange Student in NH

Hey,
I am an exchange student from Germany who started his year in mid of August.
Now that the iPhone is out, I would like to pruchase one, but there are obviously some promblems, which the Applestore doesn't want to answer me.
So the problems are basicly that the LTE Frequentes are different between at&t and Europe, but between Verizon and Europe similar or the same out of that they are diffent Models (GSM- and CDMA-Model).
What does the different Model means and would I be able to use it in Germany after my exchange?

Oh, I forgot to mention, that I would buy it from Verizon without Simlock, what it says on the side.
Warranty should be jsut 1 year so I woul  get like 7 months of american warranty, what should be enough when you think about that the most defectss are in the first weeks and after that mostly your fault.

  • German exchange student

We are hosting a German exchange student and she is interested in getting an iPhone. When she goes back home, what are the potential issues for her? Will there be a chance it won't work there for some reason? Should she get it through att so she has the sim card?
    Thanks

Understand, though, that the warranty on the iPhone is not worldwide. If she buys an iPhone in the US, she would probably have to ship it back here for service (to some friend or relative; Apple will not accept nor send shipments overseas). So she may want to think about whether she really wants to get an iPhone here. If she does, she would probably be best advised to sell it before she leaves and buy a new iPhone when she gets home.
    Regards.

  • Need help re iPhone for Ukrainian exchange student

Hi. We will be hosting an exchange student from Ukraine during the next school year. Her parents want to buy her an iPhone for her use while she's here. We have offered to cover the cost of her plan (up to a certain amount of minutes, messages, and data per month) and want to get a no-contract phone because she'll only be with us for a year. I'd also like to make sure that she can take the phone back home with her at the end of the school year and get it set up with a local service provider.
Can you recommend which iPhone/ carrier I should be looking at? I assume an unlocked GSM phone is the way to go, but I'm not sure which carriers will let me activate it without a contract, or how easy it will be for our student to activate it in Ukraine when she goes back.
    Thanks!

Here is a list of all supported carriers: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937
No distinction is made between GSM and CDMA carriers. CDMA phones are not "unlocked" and can not be used on GSM except for International roaming. In the case of the iPhone 4, the CDMA version can not be used on GSM networks at all.

What do you mean what should you do?  Just because you don't want to pay too much for a phone, doesn't make the price any cheaper.  If you can't afford the price of an unlocked phone, then you don't, or can't, buy one.

  • Exchange student interested in iPhone 4s

We are hosting an exchange student from Norway and she would like to purchase an iPhone 4s.  What is the best way to go about that and still be able to take it back home with her and use it?  Thanks for your help!

Tell her to go to the nearest Apple Store and purchase an unlocked iPhone. NOT a no-contract phone, but an unlocked phone.

  • IPhone 3G and Exchange odd problem, and it's not the 3.1 encryption bug

Ok, so first off I solved the issue I was seeing, but I have to post it anyway because I spent much too long figuring it out and would like to find a definitive answer if possible. This may be a problem with the iPhone, or it might be an Exchange issue. I honestly don't know, which is another reason I decided to post this. Ok, here goes
I received a new iPhone 3G a few days ago. I already support about a dozen or so iPhone users using Exchange email and have had no complaints. However, I finally ran into something that wasn't normal. We have a single Exchange 2003 server hosting email for a few different domain names. For this to make sense, lets say those domains are email1.com and email2.com. The server itself is in the DNS as exchange.email1.com, which is manually set in the ActiveSync configuration when it asks for the server name. I have successfully setup email for users in both email1.com and email2.com with no problems. Now is where the weirdness begins...
We have a proprietary application that requires users to have no more than 8 characters in their username, but we standardize on using the entire last name in the email address. For an example, let's say we have two employees named John and Tom Anderson. John works the email1.com company and Tom works for the email2.com company. This means their usernames would be janderso and tanderso, but their default email addresses would be [email protected] and [email protected]. The problem I have found is that this is fine for [email protected] and ActiveSync on the iPhone works correctly. However, [email protected] has no such luck and the account will verify but will not sync. This is true with SSL turned on or off. On occassion it will work, but eventually it will fail and anything synchronized to the phone will mysteriously disappear and then the phone begins giving errors connecting.
Now what I found will fix this problem is matching the username to the email address. In my case, I was able to change the logon for this particular user since they didn't need access to the proprietary application. Changing the username from tanderso to tanderson, then leaving the email as [email protected] and reconfiguring ActiveSync on the iPhone worked. This was not required for users with an email address of [email protected] who are able to have differing usernames and email addresses without any issue.
I first ran into this with an iPhone with a 3.1 OS installed, but have since been able to test it on the 3.0.1 OS and it failed there as well. Like I said, this may be a problem with the iPhone software or my Exchange server, but since I don't know which it is hopefully if it is an iPhone problem this will save you the time of trying to figure out what is going on.
Has anyone else ran into this issue, or do you have any idea what might cause it? It was very weird because sometimes it would work for a little while, but most of the time it didn't. As soon as I changed the logon account name to match the email, everything was fine.

No replies so I'm going to assume I'm the only one that ever had the issue. Everything appears to be working fine for the user now, and has been since the original post.

  • Outlook/iPhone syncing with Exchange AND .PST

I'm having trouble achieving a desireable configuration after my company upgraded to an Exchange server.  Here's my set up:  I use my personal laptop for both business and personal use (Win XP + Outlook 2007).  I also have an iPhone 4S.  In addition to my company email, I have several POP3 accounts on different servers that are not related to my main job.
Before the Exchange migration, I had Outlook setup to poll all of the POP3 accounts (including the old company email) leaving a copy on the servers for a few days.  I also had my iPhone set up with the same email accounts so that I received email on both places.  My Outlook calendar, containning both personal and business events synced perfectly to my iPhone.  Lastly, I used a separate Contacts folder (~300, mostly personal) to hold only those contacts that I wanted to sync to the iPhone (my full contact list in Outlook is 1500+ and not wanted on the phone).  This setup worked well for years.
Now after my company upgraded to an Exchange server, I am having trouble replicating this setup.  It appears that Outlook now uses a different storage file (.OST) and is using "cached mode" as set up my our IT department.  All of my old contacts, calendars and email folders are still stored in the original .PST file that now appears under a separate "Personal Folders" heirarchy in Outloook.  The other POP3 email accounts are still using the .pst file and Exchange is using the new .ost ("Mailbox") file.  Ok, so far.  I can live with this.  However, after I synced my iPhone (using iTunes) all of my contacts and calendar events were deleted from the phone.  Not Good.
For email, I set up a Exchange email account on the iPhone and the company email is coming through OK, as are the previous POP3 accounts.  But the contact list and calendar is not working as expected.  I want the contact and calendar data from my .PST file to sync to my iPhone - NOT the Exchange folders.  The reason is that I do not want my personal contacts stored somewhere on my company's Exchange server.  The same can be said of my personal calendar items.  When I added the Exchange account to the iPhone, I turned off all but the "Mail" option.  (Contacts, Calendar and Reminders are off for this account.)
It appears that in order to sync these via iTunes, I have to copy/move them into the .OST contact/calendar folders, which I don't want to do.  The iTunes sync options for my phone will not allow me to choose anything from the .PST file.
How can I get the contact and calendar info from my PST file to sync to my phone?

    roknjohn,
We need to skip the whole Exchange discussion and ost and pst files. This is not needed to troubleshoot the problem.
iTunes will sync with your Outlook default account. Do not confuse the default account with default data file (pst or ost if it comes to Exchange server).
Your solution would be to make the email account where you store your contacts and calendars as the default one.
This can be done in Outlook, Tools, Account Settings.
Make sure you are in the Accounts tab not the Data Files tab.
If you start changing default data files for your different accounts it will get messy. Besides Exchange will not allow you to do easily.
    Please post your results.

  • Iphone 3g with Exchange Activesync lackluster battery life

    Hey fellow IPhone people!
I just bought my first Iphone and just returned my first Blackberry Storm in favor of the IPhone's superior UI.
I use Exchange Activesync to synchronize my company email/contacts/calendar with my IPhone. It seems to work well, however, I have noticed that it checks for new mail about every 5 or so seconds while I am in the mail application.
I have the settings set to manual and push for the Fetch of mail, however, it still seems to check for mail every 5-10 seconds.
Given this the battery life is terrible. By mid day my battery is more than half gone and I charge it fully each evening.
Has anyone else experienced this who is actively running Exchange Activesync?
Can this be a settings issue on either the IPhone or on Exchange?
Please advise if you have specific experience with this.
I think either I have a faulty iPhone battery or ??
    Thanks !

There's something stuck in the Calendar sync...! You can check your phone's usage in the Setting-->General-->Usage... You will find the usage is abnormal high once you turn on Calendar sync with exchange. I have the same problem...2.1 didn't fix it. Now, the only thing I can do is turn on Calendar sync. But Contact and Email works fine. I found out this problem when I was doing a international travel...There's non-stop international data roaming communication between iPhone and Exchange which transmitted 100MB data in a morning, cost me US$2,000 !!!

  • Syncing my iphone 3gs with exchange server 2007.  Is there a way to delete from iphone, without it deleting from my outlook ?

syncing my iphone 3gs with exchange server 2007.  Is there a way to delete from iphone, without it deleting from my outlook ?

iCloud does not sync which apps are installed on each device. Deleting an app off of one device has no effect on the others.
