i'm trying to back up my iphone 4s to my laptop, but it will not let me unless i unlock it. but my screen is completely shattered. i can't see anything. i need help asap! pleaase! how do i unlock my phone? can i do it from my ipad? HELP.

Yes you can. Sign into your iCloud account in icloud.com with a computer, click Find my iPhone, click All Devices at top, select your iPad, then select "Erase iPad." You also can do this with another iOS device using the Find My iPhone app.

It sounds like you are unable to finish restoring with iTunes due to this error -1 message. Usually that is associated with security software. Use the steps from the following article to help with that:
Get help with iOS update and restore errors
Related errors: 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
If the issue persists, I would next use the last section of the following article titled "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up"

Thanks.Once the iPhone displays the "iPhone is disabled" message, you have to restore it to factory settings to clear it. There is no way to recover anything that is on the phone. If you have a prior backup stored in iTunes, you could use that.

Have your friend the provided the phone contact them. Based on your statements I am concluding he was or still is an AT&T customer, that is one of the requirements of getting the device unlocked. -

If you had already removed the device from 'Find My iPhone' in iCloud, then you jus tneed to powercycle the device in order to activate it.

If it has not been removed, then the activation lock is still active.
If the previous owner cannot remove the device from their account there is nothing you can do unless the place you purchased it from will give you a refund.

See this http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212, but if that doesn't help, the only other way to get past this is to restore the phone on the computer you normally sync with to your latest backup. This will remove the passcode.

What do you mean, "is it unlocked"? If your iPod has a screen lock set, it will be obvious from the iPod's screen. For issues with the iPod not appearing in iTunes, start which these troubleshooting steps:
