HT4534 Mac Mini HD Video Conferencing

I am considering purchase of a mac-mini for video conferencing.  This article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4534?viewlocale=en_US) refers to "built in camera".  Of course, the mac-mini has no built in camera.  I would be using my HDTV for a monitor.  Can I use the Logitech c910 & the mini for HD Facetime?

I also have a mac mini and am using the Logitech C920.  At the beggining, I had issues with its built in mics not working with FaceTime, but I found a solution for the problem and now all the programs that interface with the camera work great (FT, Skype, iMovie, etc).  If you do buy the C920 run into the same issue that I had with the mic not working, here is the quick solution for the problem:
Cause of Problem:  The Logitech C920 camera/mic operates on a 2ch-16bit integer.  You can verify this by opening "finder + Utilities + Audio MIDI Setup" and then select the HD Pro Webcam C920 and look at the "Input" Default values.
The Mac Mini's "Built-In Output" and "Buiilt-In Input" formats were set for 2ch-24 bit integer.  Therefore, the default input and output were out of sync with the C920 default format.
Solution:  Change the Mac Mini's default Output to "2ch-16 bit integer".  You don't need to change the default Input but it doesn't hurt to do so.  Once you do this, the camera and it's built in mics work on facetime and all other video chat applications.

  • Mac to PC Video conferencing: OhphoneX to NetMeeting

Most of the Mac to PC Video conferencing posts talk about iChat AV via .Mac/ AIM screen name to AOL Messenger.
For those wishing a larger video size one could replace AOL Messenger with Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc).
We, on the Mac side, are blessed with the ease of use of iChat AV.
The set-up, on the them side, the PC side, is a bit of a hassle for your poor family and friends who barely know how to shutdown their PC with the Start button.
Why not let the Micros~1 Windows 2000 / XP users enable their packaged NetMeeting software.
I recall from my dark ages that NetMeeting was serving its purpose with adequate proficiency (Isn"t that a "contradixio in terminis").
OhponeX claims to be compatible with Micros~1 NetMeeting.
    http://xmeeting.sourceforge.net/
The installation of Ohphone on the Mac is .... simple.
The activation of Micros~1 Netmeeting .... requires the filling of a few set-up screens.
Now find each others IP address:
In OhphoneX this is displayed on the main screen
In Micros~1 NetMeeting, go to Help, Click About and there the IP(s) are listed.
Enter the IP in the callto screen and press enter.
On the Mac side you can click Connection Statistics to see the in/out streams for both audio and video.
The mentioned OhphoneX website has a good manual.
The lovers of OpenSource will dig the code.
One next step to be solved: connection across LANs.
Within the same LAN I"ve got this Mac to PC connection working.
Cross LAN I got stuck with NATs and router ports.
    Any help out there?
    Regards,
    Coen Jeukens

    OK, Bill, <big><big><big>☺</big></big></big>
Coen and I have chatted about this.
I believe that he posted this thread to assure those who wonder whether OhPhoneX can connect to NetMeeting conferences know that
b it can. Coen, please correct me if I am wrong about this.
I have never used either OhPhoneX or NetMeeting, but Coen tells me that this info will be of value to iSight users wanting to do so.
    As related to Coen's
]"One next step to be solved: connection across LANs.",
Bill, if YOU can't answer this one, I do not stand a chance!! <big><big><big>☺</big></big></big>
If Coen does not get needed answer from someone here, I suggest he might find better help from http://xmeeting.sourceforge.net/ or in the Tiger > Getting Online & Networking Discussions area.
That is the best I have to offer.
    EZ Jim

  • Connecting my Mac Mini DVI video output to Dell W3706MC LCD TV VGA Input

I tried connecting my mac mini to the Dell W3706MC LCD TV VGA input but it wanted me to change the resolution of the mac to 1360 x 768 at 60 Hz. I did that but it still would not display the video. I tried my PC laptop and that worked fine with different resolutions. So I know that there is nothing wrong with the TV. Did anyone experience this same problem?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Karl

I'm confused about your comment "it wanted me to change the resolution of the mac to 1360 x 768 at 60 Hz." I presume the way this was communicated was through a dialog box, correct? But if you could see a dialog box, that means you had a working screen at one point, correct? Why don't you just run at that resolution?

  • Mac-Mini HTPC Video-Out Problems (Component to DVI)

I recently decided to go with a Mac-Mini as the central-brain of my HTPC configuration, and I was immediately halted in the process of getting things working by my inability to properly output video from the Mac-Mini such that it's even visible on my 50" Plasma TV (Panasonic TH-50PHW3).
Neither of my A/V Receivers (Denon AVR-3805 & Denon AVR-2805) have HDMI inputs, but both of them have component video inputs for HD content, so I purchased the DVI-to-Component cable linked below to use for outputting video from my Mac-Mini to the Denon:
    http://sewelldirect.com/DVI-to-Component-Adapter-Cable-6ft.asp
Needless to say, nothing I've tried has been effective in my Mac-Mini being displayed on my Plasma TV??
    Any thoughts?

From other threads I see that others have tried and failed at this. The adapter cables don't work with the Mini (or other Macs as far as I know). Apparently you need a "transcoder" box. It will apparently take the DVI port's RGB signals and convert them to Y-Pb-Pr component signals.
The transcoders can also cost a couple hundred bucs. Check out some of the discussions at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=824143
Here is a relatively cheap one that seems to work: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=63079 2&CatId=1430
Other option is to go with a S-Video adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A but you will loose resolution.l

  • Mac Mini s-video vs. PowerBook s-video quality

Is there notable difference between Mac Mini's s-video output (with the DVI to s-video adapter) and PowerBook G4 1.67 s-video output?
I'm asking this because I've found PowerBook s-video output to be quite good. I can easily use my Powerbook on a CRT 28" WS TV. If Mac Mini delivers same quality, I'm quite sure I will get one to replace DVD, CD and digi-tv on the living room.
This subject briefly surfaced on another thread, but I decided to ask it more visibly.

    Yep,
I have the powerbook 1.67 and a mac mini core duo, the powerbook handles s-video really well in terms of resolutions however the mini fails, it cannot manage anamorphic displays which are rubbish if youve got a widescreen tv. However in terms of quality they are both great even though the powerbook has 128mb video card the mini easily matches.

  • Late 2011 Mac Mini slow video refresh on Yosemite

I was rather happily running Mavericks, but decided why not on the upgrade to Yosemite after rough testing on my MBA, but after installation video performance has been awful on my Mini. Mission control has an awful framerate during it's animation, and when using (ImageJ) drawing/refreshing an open image windows is painstakingly slow. Below is the output from Etrecheck and Linc's script. I do not have similar issues on my MBA, and I did not have this issue on Mavericks.

I went all the way down to 720p (the lowest I could take it) with scaling and it didn't really help. The weird thing is that when I play something in Steam the GPU is fine, but using Mission control with a lot of windows open, or opening a lot of windows really bogs it down (which it didn't do a week ago in Mavericks). My feeling is that it is a poorly written graphic driver and that my issues with imageJ are because it is using the driver in a way that is failing like it is in Finder/Mission Control, and in Steam it's getting to the hardware in its own way. I've sent feedback to Apple about it.

  • Mac Mini Slow Video Streaming

I'm not sure if there's really a solution to this problem, but I thought I'd give it a try and see if anyone out there had an idea.
I recently purchased a new Mac Mini and I'm trying to stream movies off of my MacBook. Unfortunately, the connection speed between the machines seems to be quite slow and the streaming barely works.
I have an Airport Extreme and I also have an Airport Express near the MacMini extending the network.
Is there any way to have the MacMini stream directly from my Macbook wirelessly rather than going through the router? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That type of closed, peer-to-peer network is called and "ad hoc" network. You could Google search on that or else ask your question in the Airport catagory of this forum to see if it is possible to establish such a connection between two Macs.
Do you know the data rate requirement for the videos you are trying to run by network? How do they look when run on the native machine and not over the network? Have you tried connecting the two Macs ad hoc by an ethernet cable to see if it works wired?

  • Mac mini for video editing

I have just started to video edit and need a new machine. As of now I have a late 2006 black MacBook.  It is very slow and lags in iMovie. I am considering getting a ssd but I know that won't help entirely. I will use this machine to run final cut pro x or possible final cut 7. I will also be doing stuff involving special effects and what not. I am still new too this stuff. I love film and want to make a couple short films. I am going to college for history and communicatins and want to get my noise wet before hand. Would you consider a Mac mini good for a starter and something that will last a couple of years. Also what model. I want to put a ssd in it and want to know of toi is hard to do. I want quad core so I am looking into the server model. Is the server worth the money? Please don't tell me to get an iMac I don't like them. The glossy screen hurts my eyes and besides I have a grat set up. I have a 23" apple cinema display, keyboard, mouse, and magic trackpad. Or do you think I should get a 15" MBP.

I went to the Apple Store last night after work to by the Mac Mini, but they wanted to charge me an extra £80 compared to the online price. I wanted the 1gb memory upgrade and apparently they was going to charge me for the 500mb they would have to take out to put the 1gb in.
So guess what, I didn't buy it. I've got the order placed online though. Can't wait for it to be delivered, should be about 7 days apparently.

  • Mac mini for video / music production

    hello!
i'm really into music and video, i currently do all my video work in premiere pro on the pc, and music is done in a combination of packages like reason, soundforge, etc.
i'm really tempted by the offer of a mac mini for a few hundred pounds complete with garageband, imovie, etc. plus i can always get final cut on there too.
I am serious about what i do and would want high quality results. what i'm asking is basically, consdiering the specs of the mac mini, (i'd have to go for the top of the range to get the dvd writer) will it be capable of performing well with video work and more importantly, will garageband let me do professional sounding sequencing and mixing?
or am i kidding myself that the mini is capable? because if the option is buying a G5, i'll use the cash to upgrade my windows pc instead. it's all about tools for the job for me, i've got no brand loyalty.
thanks for any advice / opinions!!

There's no doubt that the mini CAN do what you want - it outperforms many Mac systems that have been sucessfully doing pro-level video and audio work for years. On the video side the system is very capable, and whether in iMovie or Final Cut, professional results are achievable. Indeed, being digital, there's no practical way to tell from the rsult whether it came off a mini or an old G3 iMac or a brand new G5 tower. The mini's only drawback is that rendering takes time. Less time than older systems, and more time than a G5 would. Some rendering (such as transitions or effects in iMovie) run in the background and don't prevent continuing work.
On the audio side, I'll leave that to people who have a better knowledge of the application than I do as a rather 8th-rate amateur!
As for the model you should buy, I would suggest NOT the $699 version with superdrive. I'd suggest you buy the $599 model, replace the 512Mb RAM with a 1Gb stick, and add an external burner. That way you would be getting enough memory to give the mini a solid performance in video work, and giving yourself the choice of DVD burner which not only would include possible dual layer devices (the superdrive is single) but also better burn speeds.

  • Mac mini 2012 - Video Problem (Not HDMI Flickering)

    Hello guys,
I have a problem with video, it causes to shut down the monitor while is playing Chefville in facebook, i had no idea why would to turn off monitor. It doesn't present any "beep" sound, it seems Intel HD4000 is a defective.
I waited like 15 minutes when mac mini is cooling, i pressed a button to turn on, the monitor works.
I think it's overheating Intel HD 4000 cause to shut down the monitor.
    How to prevent this problem?
    Thanks!

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
Does it use Flash or Java?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac Mini and Video Editing

I wanted to find out if the new Mac Mini is powerful enough for basic home video editing. This will not be anything professional, simply Vlogs to post to Youtube. I was looking at building a new PC for this task however I have been looking at the new Mac Mini's, which comes with I movie, and with the new I5 and I7 chips, I was thinking that would be a better option. Thoughts
    Mike

I would recommend starting with Imovie on a mini, since it will come for free on your system, and if you don't like it/need more, move up to a higher end program.  CS5.5 and Avid Media Composer 5.5 have some great student/teacher discounts if your still a student or have a teacher in the family.  FCPX is priced low for non students as well, 300 ain't a lot for a high end program like FCP, it used to be 1 grand for it til this version came out.  You should be fine running any program on a mac mini (or any model) with at least 4gb of ram.  If you get into professional post production you can always upgrade the mini to 16gb of ram, get a 6g SSD, a external thunderbolt drive, etc.  My 2 generation old mini works fine with high end NLE software, so the new one should work just as well/better.

  • Is there a way to upgrade my mac mini's video memory?

I want to have a new video/graphics card for my mac mini, but i'm not sure if it's possible, and if it is possible how to do it.
    Please help!!

16Gb is the maximum amount of memory the MacMini will support. I have a Mid 2011 MacMini server that I have swapped the 2 500GB spinning hard drives and Replaced them with a 1.5TB spinning Hard Drive & a 240GB SSD (ssd being my boot drive) the SSD with mac a night a day difference in the day to day operation of your mac mini.
Here is some of what I have done to my Mini:

  • New Mac Mini intermittent video problems

I just set up a Mac Mini 2009 version and I'm using 2 LCD monitors. One is a Planar PX2611W and the other is A Samsung Syncmaster 191t. Most of the time they work fine but I'm getting intermittent problems:
    1. The main monitor (plugged into the mini DVI port) occasionally just displays multicolor static noise.
It resolves itself after a couple of minutes.
    2. The secondary monitor (mini display port) was working but then just stopped displaying. I checked the connections and they were good. I was finally able to get it working again by unplugging and replugging in the connection to the mini display port.
Could this be a faulty video card or a faulty display port?

Here is a "must-see" thread from MacBook section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8955103&#8955103
I spent more than hour to read and here is the only take-away:
    SwitchResX - http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/DL.shtml
I tried to add a custom resolution - VESA 1680 x 1050 H: 66.874KHz V: 59.884Hz 119MHz pixel clock, according to the 225MS specification from Samsung. You may check this from the bundled CD from your 226BW. Though, this Samsung suggested resolution made the problem even worse! The screen flash with "multicolor static noise" more frequent!
So I tried to change the V frequency to exactly 59Hz (in CVT-RB simplified mode). The problem...well...I can't say it has gone as I can't spend an hour to look at the screen to check, but I would say, better! It's worth to give it a try!
