i have an iphone 4 ios 3.1.3 which is outdated . i went to settings , general but there was no software update feature . its on all other phones same models which myfriends have . can anyone help.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • HT4623 Trying to update iPad 4.2 to os5. In general settings, there is no option for software update somehow do I get os5?

Can't figure out how to update software to os5 on my iPad.  When I go to general there is no option to chose download software. Help.  What do I do?
    Thanks!

The option to update from device was only brought in with iOS5, so as stedman1 says you'll have to connect to computer and use iTunes.

how can I update my iPad 2. I go to Settings>General but Software update is not there

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Trying to update my LG G2, when I go to Settings, About, there is no option for Software Update..

I am trying to update my LG G2, when I go to Settings >> About >> there is no option for "Software Update" .. what else can I do?

4.4.2 was the last update.  Now, in the same section look at Build Number.  Mine says VS98026A.  If yours ends with 26A, you are current.  The last update was for HD Voice called Advanced Calling 1.0.  Our next over the air or OTA update will be sometime next year, probably near March.  The G2 is already getting 5.0 Lollipop in Poland and is rolling this way.  We will get it, but even though Google has released the source code and update to manufacturers, Verizon still has to test, add to it and approve it, then roll it out over the course of a few weeks or months.

  • HT4623 I go into General, then About, but there is no option for Software Update! How do I get this, as without it appears I can't update OIS?

The how to update the operating system (oIS) says to go into General, then About, and then Software Update. But my iPad doesn't have this option. Can anyone help?

That feature isn't present until you have installed iOS 5 or later. You must upgrade via iTunes and your computer.
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • HT4623 When i go to Settings General there is no option for software update.  Can anyone tell me how to update from 4.2.6

Can anyone tell me how to update from 4.2.6?

Check to make sure you don't have two firewalls (i.e. a Windows firewall and one on your router).
If that's not it, you may need to dig deeper ... like temporarily changing your router's DNS to use Google's DNS or OpenDNS instead of your ISP's DNS.  Or maybe open up a certain port on your router (not sure which one that would be though, sorry).  Or, if your computer is connected to the internet over wi-fi, try connecting to your router (or modem) via Ethernet, I heard of that solving a problem like this (though I can't confirm if that was real).

  • I am struggling to download iOS 5 onto my iPad 2.  There is no option for software update in settings.

I am struggling to download iOS5 onto my iPad 2 as there is no software update option in settings?

The option to update over the air is a new feature that appeared with iOS 5.  If you do not already have iOS 5 on the iPad2, then you will need to plug it into iTunes on your computer and update it there first.  After you've upgraded to iOS 5, you will then have the option to use over the air updates in the future.

If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

That is only present if you have already updated to iOS 5 or later.  If you're on iOS 4 you can only update while connected to your computer's iTunes.

You can't access iCloud from your iPhone unless you're on iOS 5 or later.  Otherwise, refer to this article:
