HT4539 iTunes content in two places.  Need to consolidate.

I have my iTunes library with purchased and personal music on an old computer.  I recently purchased a few pricey items (audiobooks) using my new computer. When I synced my iPod to the new computer, everything was wiped except purchases. So now I have some items on my new computer and some on the old. I thought when I connected to the iTunes store on the old computer the new purchases would download, but they didn't.
I have Match, but I don't want to just access my iTunes content.  I want to download all my content to my new computer and be able to sync it to my ancient and beloved iPod.  I'm thinking if I move my iTunes to the new computer I will lose the new purchases on it. The best scenario would be to have my current iTunes content on both computers, downloadable to my iPod, and to be able to access everything from my iPhone (no problems there.)
Does anyone know a way to do this?  I have an external hard drive, but don't know how to use it other than a complete sync.  I have used it with the old laptop but not the new. The old laptop runs Vista, the new has Windows 8...and don't even get me started on that!  Suggestions anyone?

I solved the problem by myself.

  • How do I sync iPhoto & iTunes content between two accounts on our iMac G5?

I am tired of transferring family photos and shared music between my wife's account and mine. We are fairly new to MAC OS. I am sure that there is a way. The OS does everything else we can imagine. Please assist.
    Thanks,

    Hi Richard
I had a very similar issue but have found a solution for iPhoto at least on the MacOSXHints forum under thread.

    This works for me fine.
I can't get this to work with my iTunes library but this is probably because my music library is on an external hard drive and I don't think the settings ACL works on external drive - please correct me anyone.
To get iTunes working I deleting the iTunes folder on my wifes account at
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
and placed a shortcut to the shared iTune library folder on the external drive.
    Hope this helps

  • HT1751 Question: Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e. TV shows) to an external harddrive, keeping the rest of the content in place?  Several seasons of TV shows are taking up 102 GB of space, and I'm completely out of space on my HD

Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e., only TV shows), keeping the rest of the Library in place?  I have purchased several seasons of some TV shows, which take up 102 GB on my harddrive, inside my iTunes Media Folder.  I don't want to move my entire Library of music and apps etc to the external harddrive (HD), but I rarely watch the TV shows, so wouldn't mind them being located on an external HD, which I would plug in before trying to watch the shows through iTunes?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

I don't think you can simultaneously have two libraries open. But you can have your media spread across multiple disk drives. Just change your iTunes preferences such that the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is not selected. That way, new items can remain on your external drive if that's where you add them from.
The only caution is if you ever add items to your library from some "temporary" location, such as a USB drive. With these preference changes, iTunes would keep the native file on the USB drive, which would possibly lead to you deleting the file and losing the link. So, when you have your preferences to allow you to add new items to iTunes without copying them to the iTunes Music folder, you would want to put the native files in the desired location first, then add to iTunes.
To move existing videos and podcasts to the external drive, you can either do that as you have been (moving the native files and correcting the ! warning), or simply delete them from the library (but keep the native files) then re-add them from their new location on the external drive (you'd lose play history and ratings though, but may not be an issue for videos and podcasts).

  • Two Iphones need two itunes accounts?

Plan on buying two iphones, one for me and the wife. Do we each need an itunes account? Why or why not? Is there an advantage to having different accounts? If I use my itunes account to activate both phones will it play song purchased with my account on both phones?

    MacShadow,
Activation for the iPhone, and authorization to play iTunes Store content are two different things.
This page has the video tutorial on activation, and shows activating more than one phone on either individual or family plans:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/activation.html
This article discusses authorization, and mentions syncing to an unlimited number of iPods in the footnotes:

  • I have two separate iTunes libraries on two separate Computers. I need to consolidate them so I can play them on a brand new computer. How do I do this so I can play them off an External Hard Drive on my brand new computer?

I have two separate iTunes libraries on two separate Computers. I need to consolidate them so I can play them on my brand new computer. How do I do this so I can play them off an External Hard Drive on my brand new computer?

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

Can two different Apple ID's share itunes content? If so , how do i set this up?

    Hello mqg13,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
How do you mean "share iTunes content?" You are able to purchase and download from one Apple ID on multiple devices, simply follow the steps in the article below:

If you have the horizontal menu bar showing (File, Edit, View,...), select View, then select Show Sidebar.
If the menu bar is not showing, dorp down the menu in the very upper left corner and select show menu bar, then follow steps above.
    Hope that helps.  Good luck.

  • Combining two iTunes libraries from two computers onto a third

Hi there -- I haven't seen anything in the archives that is this exact situation, but if you know where it is in there, please point me in the right direction!
I have two separate collections of iTunes music on two different older Macs. I want to merge these collections into one that will now live on a newer MacBook Pro with iTunes 11.1.5. I can figure out how to get one or the other imported onto the MacBook but not both together as one merged collection. I'm getting confused about how to get all the media and the library files transferred. Help!
Can anyone walk me through the steps of what I need to do this? It must be possible, right??
    Many thanks in advance.

There isn't really a way to ideally merge them.  Methods such as the one linked in an earlier post have you make sure your media are more or less in one or two locations by using the organize/consolidate step for each library, then adding media files from the secondary library to the primary one as new files.  If you have a lot of content overlap you will end up with duplicates.
So, use consolidate/organize to make sure you have each iTunes library's content intact in one place on each computer.  You don't need or want to consolidate to another drive or computer, just make each one internally complete.  Choose a library to export intact.  Copy the entire iTunes folder to the other computer.  If the third/new computer has no iTunes content simply overwrite the iTunes folder there.  If it has content then you'll have to do additional steps but I won't bother with those yet.  Start iTunes in the new home and make sure the primary library is working (it should look identical to the original one).  Now you can copy the media folder alone from the other computer.  Copy it onto the Automatically Add To itunes folder on the new computer.  It will add the files as new tracks.  If you want to do some hand-weeding of particular duplicate albums you can also be more selective in what you add to the second library.
It is possible to export playlists from the secondary library and then import them into the new library.  note that a playlist is simply a text listing of which files are in the list and the files will have to be on the new computer in the identical locations (the point of consolidating).

  • How do i sync one itunes account with two iphones, one ipod touch, and a nano?

I need help in how to sync the one itunes account we use as a family with the two iphones my wife and i have and an ipod touch that my son has and a nano that my daughter has. Please help.

That article applies, as far as I can tell, to all things called iPod X where X can be nano, touch, classic etc.
We don't have two iPhones in the family as yet but as I understand it each device can have separate settings for syncing calendars and contacts. For example my iPhone syncs these over the air with the Exchange server at work so if/when my wife gets an iPhone it would be easy to have hers sync to our computer
To make sure your apps don't inadvertently merge turn off Automatically sync new apps from the apps tab when you connect your device.
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer

How do I share one itunes account between two users on the same computer without taking up twice as much space on my hard drive?

You would need to move the itunes folder to a location that both users have permissions to access such as the Shared folder or any folder on the root level of the macintosh HD.
You can find instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 This method allows you to share the content without sharing the same library.

  • Using iTunes account on two computers?

Can I use my iTunes library on two different computers? For example, if I have all my songs downloaded to my office computer in my iTunes, can I sync my ipod to my home computer and use the same library as the songs I downloaded to my office computer?

You can't auto-sync an Ipod with multiple libraries. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
Songs you purchase on one computer can be loaded on the iPod and copied to the second computer if you wish, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • Can I use one Apple TV unit to distribute content to two TV's?

Can I use one Apple TV unit to distribute content to two TV's? If so, how?
I want to be able to purchase movies off of the iTunes store on both TV's and to display photos and listen to music.
    Thank you for looking.

Apple TV is designed to display content on a single TV only. Although it has component and HDMI outputs they are not independent and, as has been pointed out already, HDMI will take precedence over the component video.
You will need two Apple TVs, one for each TV, and you can then sync both with one computer either with the same content or with different content selected from a common library in iTunes..
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I "share" or "move" iPhoto content between two acounts on PowerBook

I share my PowerBook with my wife and we both have separate accounts. Problem is that all iPhoto content and iTunes content is on "my" account and she is having to switch from her account to mine in order to utilize content. I rarely use both applications so I would like to know if one of the following solutions exist:
    1. can we create one database that allows both of these applications to effectively "share" the same content? So, for example, my wife could download photos from her account as from my account that would go into one single database. (without taking up 2x the memory)? Would like to know if the same solution can be applied to iTunes.
    2. if no solution for option 1 exisits, can I somehow "migrate" all the iPhoto/iTunes content from my account to my wife's account?
One idea I have had is to simply synch our iPod on my wife's account. Theoretically, the iPod has all of the iTunes and iPhoto content and should synch up on my wife's account, right? I could then delete the same content from my account and then my wife could use these applications from her account. Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Robert

do I understand you correctly that if I simply "import" the "Album" folder
    containing our photos
I'm not sure I know what you mean by "import the album folder". If you consult iPhoto Help, you'll see that albums (or album folders) contain no actual photos. I used the terms "Export" and "Import" because those menu options are how you get photos out of and in to an iPhoto database. The alternative is to move (or copy) an iPhoto database (see the various iPhoto Help topics under "photo library basics").
iPhoto was designed as a "personal" photo organizer -- it's not designed to be a multi-user database or a collaborative tool. If you want two different accounts to access the same iPhoto Library folder, then you need to put it somewhere where both accounts have access -- either an external drive (or partition) or one account's Public folder. You'll have to sort out your own collaborative conflicts, should any occur.
