I need to upgrade from OS X 10.6.8 to 10.7 or better in order to run TurboTax. My iMac is about 4 years old with limited space. To what do you recommend I upgrade?

    Hello kparker2112,
I understand you would like information on upgrading your operation system. The link below will help you determine if your computer meets the requirements for the current version of OS X, which is Yosemite. I would highly recommend backing up your data before upgrading any version of OS X:

  • Is class highly recommended for exam?

    Hi,
I'll be getting my OCA certification and for the Oracle Database 11g: Administration I 1Z0-052 exam I am wondering if it is highly recommended to take the preceding class. I have about 2.5 years managing Oracle servers as a DBA and have upgraded and built several 11g environments by now, as well as day to day administration. Looking over the class topics, there would not be much that I haven't already learned myself but I am wondering if it helps when it comes to the exam, as I know the exam questions can be very specific and not necessarily rooted in practical application so my only concern is in that regard. Is the class geared toward prepartion for the exam and do the materials also speak to the exam?
    Thanks

ThanksSure you are OCA certificate you will be getting .... but no 1z0-052 have you passed yet so no OCA certificate you will get yet ;-)
    Most seriously.
If you are a well practiced DBA and confident with the 1z0-052 topics then buying the exam orientated Oracle Press or Sybex book as a double check would probably be the most effective route to OCA IMHO to check you have not any knowledge gaps (these are not perfect, but the can be useful). A possible exception might be if you have a WDP course provider nearby (Never mind hte quality feed the width (for the money). (wdp.oracle.com).
However if you go forward for he 11g DBA OCP then you will need a verified course as part of the pre-requisites. This can be one directly relevant to the OCP course, of there are others that may extend into an area you may wan to get into.
You instance IMHO there is little point in an experienced DBA doing a course than substantially covers a lot of what he already knows, perhaps better to seek something off the approved course list which expands the knowledge ( dataguard, tuning, Clusterware/RAC). Having said that there is a lot of RMAN in the database admin II, so if you have experienced that much that may be useful. Costs of courses can vary, and course cost may be a factor.
I assume you have already browsed http://certification.oracle.com ; ensure you have understood the mandatary training courses properly.
Having said that, if you have the money Oracle University training is usually excellent.

  • Bookdog...highly recommended!

I went through all of the discussions looking for the appropriate place to put this tidbit and this seems to be the right one:
If you have lots of bookmarks in Safari you should take Bookdog for a spin (recommended for 10.3.9 & above). It is well worth the time and effort and definetly worth the $$ to buy the license. (I'm not associated with the software developer in any way, shape or form....I just like to recommend software that WORKS!!)
I have over 3,000 bookmarks and I just downloaded the most recent version of Bookdog and it was able to go through all of them in a matter of minutes and let me know which were good and which were no longer useable. I then went through the list of questionable sites and was able to either update the URL or delete it completely. What a time saver!

    Hi Modiver,
Thanks for letting us know, but I'm sure the most of us knowing about Bookdog already.
I came from Jaguar to Panther an in the past I used the FREE version Safari-Sorter. Bookdog...maybe highly recommended, but why should I buy something that normally is integrated in a browser.

Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.
Be aware, Apple no longer support Snow Leopard v10.6 >  www.ibtimes.com/apple-kills-snow-leopard-os-x-106-no-longer-receives-security-u pdates-1558393
See if your Mac can run v10.9 Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
If so, you can download and install Mavericks for free from the App Store.

After re-installing Win 7 64 on my computer, and attempting to install my copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements, I now get the following message: "This version of Photoshop Elements requires MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher to be installed". Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is? It has always worked in the past.

I have found a temporary solution, allowing the previous version of iTunes (v. 11.1.3 (x64) in my case) to be re-installed.  It will allow you to re-establish use of iTunes until the Apple software engineers fix the most recent disasterous upgrade (v. 11.1.4).  Please see and follow the procedure in the following article:http://smallbusiness.chron.com/reverting-previous-version-itunes-32590.html   The previous version works beautifully.

  • I did the recommended re-install to resolve the missing MSVCR80.dll file. This worked, but I am now stymied by two error messages: "Apple Mobile Device failed to start" and "Apple application support not found". How to overcome?

That worked, however I now get two error messages when I install I Tunes:
o  Apple Mobile Device failed to start.
o  Apple Application Support not found.
This were of course deleted in the recommended re-install procedure to resolve the dll file, but repeated uninstalls and installs simply bring up these two error messages with a recommendation to install I Tune again. Installing the new I Tunes version seems to be problematic per the discussion groups and has no simple solution. SHould not the Genius bar be able to resolve this at an Apple Store? Want to buy a new I Phone 5S, but this problem effectively stymies this.

  • Installer built with Application Builder gives error "Cannot install, higher version already installed"

I am having an issue with an installer which I created with the Application Builder. I have a project that I have successfully deployed. Subsequently I created another project (and vi) which is based on a copy of the originals, both with new file names. In the renamed project file, I changed all file names, paths, and all resources, to reflect the new names. I also changed the installer’s destination and install folders, of course. I reset the executable’s version number (in the Build Specification properties) to 1.0 (the original was 1.3). I then successfully built an executable and the application installer. However, when I run the installer (setup.exe), it gives a dialog (after the license screen) that it “Cannot install” because a “higher version already installed”.
I’ve done exactly the same thing with other vi’s and projects of mine, and never had this issue. The installer correctly installs the newly created (and renamed) version where it is told to in the project file. Also, I’ve never had a problem deploying (installing) on my development PC either.
I have carefully checked and rechecked to make sure there is no reference to the original executable or paths. What could be causing this behavior? I want to keep the two projects completely separate, so simply changing the version to higher than 1.3 is not an acceptable solution.
Thanks to anyone in advance for any help and suggestions.
    Ed

Yes, LV 8.5 does NOT give me control over the GUID. In the project file there are three such strings:
    "App_applicationGUID"
    "App_INI_aliasGUID"
    "App_INI_GUID"
They all have different numbers and none of them match the GUID or PackageGUID in setup.ini. I don't know if they are related or not, but usually it's not a good idea to mess with (manually edit) files like these (project, ini, etc.) unless you know what you are doing. (For example, I do edit the setup.ini file to change some of the [Dialogs] parameters, but that is based on direction from NI support.)
Anyway, like I said, I've made copies of projects before and never ran into this problem. At least I have a solution, however laborious, in creating a new project file from scratch.
Let me know if anyone has more thoughts on this.

You are in the typical catch22.. you cannot use the TC without setting it up.. you cannot set it up without Lion.. so you can install the latest utility.
Do you have any reasonably current iOS devices.. they can run the iOS version of the utility.. that will allow you to set up the TC.
Or invite a friend with a laptop running at least Lion
Or take the TC back and get a plain USB hard drive and backup to that.

  • A New MBP (and one for the road: any highly-recommended external drive for.

If I order a new MBP 17" for architecture and planning grad program, will SL come installed on the machine? Is SL considered a whole new OS or jut an update to Leopard? I am not even sure I am wording the questions correctly, so I apologize if I am not. I stopped at Tiger because the Leopard OS looked a bit too intimidating for me back then but I think I can deal with it now. Is it a big set-back that I did not learn how to use Leopard and now I am getting SL?
thanks for any help in this area.
I will throw this out there. I also need a decent but very heavy duty external hard drive to use for the work done with CAD. Any recommendations on a top-of-the-line heavy duty external hard drive? I guess the case is the main thing but the drive should be able to take some extra abuse because I baby the MacBook Pros but sometime the external drives get the abuse. I think USB2.0 is good enough for what I need.
    Thanks Again

I would imagine that you could turn up good and bad reports on any drive. I have been highly satisfied with my 3 LaCies, two dating back to 2004. And, LaCie has very good phone support.
I use only clones and drag and drop for data changes between clonings. If I had to choose one method of backing up, then I definitely would use this process. Still, one can take a dual approach other than mine. The idea is to have a clone, which is updated fairly recently, to serve as a fail-safe, system backup, and restoration device. And, one could still use TM for day-to-day backups because of the flexibility it allows in moving backwards in time to retrieve data and because it updates automatically frequently. I want to experiment more with TM. So, I will move to this sort of dual system in the near future--as soon as I figure out which partition on my main external I can do without.
For cloning, I like SuperDuper because it has the ability to make incremental clones--thus, shortening the recloning process significantly. CCC is good, but I have never used it. Actully, Disk Utility is a highly respectable cloner, but it does not have as many options as the others, including not having the ability to make incremental clones.

  • Which are the highly recommended JMS brokers for live deployment?

Which are the most recommended JMS servers for a new deployment?
Any tips on these will be very helpful.

I have my dev server - I leave this on 512MB and that's fine for
most of the stuff I do. We generally up this to a gig on our live
servers (which only run 3-4 small sites), and historically we've not
gone above this on our Shared servers (which host anywhere up to 400
sites) because of the 32-bit limit.
However, now we're running CF9 on 64-bit Server 2008, we've obviously got a lot more RAM available. The obvious choice is to ramp it up high, but I've also been heard that causes issues of its own - the Java GC then has far more work to do when it's called and as the memory fills it's harder to get a contiguous block of RAM, so performance can suffer.
Leave the memory setting at the default value, until testing requires you to do otherwise, or your sites unravel some unforeseen memory demand. It's a risk our SysAdmin colleagues are prepared to take. With the coming of 64-bit, they've been on the alert, and have always cattle-prodded us whenever we've been tempted to push the button to go higher.
Our defaults almost coincide with yours: 512 MB for 32-bit and just over 1GB for 64-bit. So what you yourself have just said is my own basic wisdom on the subject, too: if it aint broke, don't try to fix it.
[postscript: I work full-time at one company, part-time at another. By pure coincidence, both use the same JVM memory settings.]

  • ITunes 11.1.5 Update - Highly Recommended

For the last few months, I've, along with many others experienced issues with my devices either not being recognized in iTunes or more specifically, being able to sync via Wifi.  I even spent hours with higher level technical support trying to isolate what was wrong and it seemed I would be destined to only sync via USB and device connected to my laptop.
I'm happy to report that the newest iTunes 11.1.5 seems to have resolved this issue.  As soon as the update was complete, I opened iTunes and voila, both iPads and both iPhones instantly appeared and were able sync wirelessly.
If anyone is having issues syncing, I suggest you update to the newest version right away.

Have you tried downloading the current iTunes directly from the website (without the App Store)?
    If not, here's the site:
