HT4623 Can't update Operating System
I need to update operating systems but the option is not in my General menu. Any idea what I should do?
The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

An iPad 1 will update to iOS 5.1.1, an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.0.1

Since you are limited to iOS 5.1.1 on an iPad 1, this may be of interest.

I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 ,I want to buy the updated operating system that puts iMessage and Facetime on my Macbook Pro. What should I search for, and then purchase, in the App Store?
FaceTime can run in the version of OS X that you currently have. To get Messageyou need Mountain Lion. The protocol used by Messages is iMeassage.
The question is does your MBP meet the specs for Mountain Lion.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space -
I updated operating system to OS X Yosemite, also updated pages. Now when I try to open files I am told to update pages
You have both Pages 5.5.2 and your older version of Pages on your Mac .
Pages 5.5.2 ids in your Applications folder.
Pages '08/'09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
When you double click on a file either version may open, but usually the older, and it can not open files from the newer version.
Right click on the file instead and choose which version to open from.

So I decided to dive into the land of windows and boot camp today to test gaming performance.
After the Macbook Air creates the operating system usb drive and partions the disc, the computer automatically reboots (persumably to open in windows installer) ecept all I get is a black screen of death that reads Error can't load operating system.
any suggestions? I've spent a considerable time in goolgle looking for people with similar issues but everyone else seems to only have troubles after they get it installed.
On a side note, I did install Parallels 7 and successfully got windows 7 running off the same usb drive that BCA created, but I'm under the understanding that BCA is the windows method of choice for gamers and the like.May you help me to understand these errors
First it says " Not enough Space in Runtime area!!. SMBIOS data will not be available. Press F1 to Resume
When I press F1 it starts loading but then it brings a blue screen with a message " The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant, please contact Vender for an Updated BIOS.
I have only one partition and no External storage on the machine. I even took this machine to HP centre here in Zambia but they could not sort out the problem. Does this mean this PC will never work? -
attempting to update operating system on macbook pro with osx10.4.11.
how is this accomplished and what is the cost ? is the worth the expense give the age of unit?Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard. -

BTW, I'm using with this release for mesa and ATI drivers: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509
Last edited by KingYes (2011-08-07 07:46:17)Then I misread the problem: Pacman apparently wanted to update your packages so that one of the updated packages would have had libglapi as a dependency while you also had mesa-full updated.
I always thought pacman could be a bit more helpful in these cases with showing why it wants to install the respective package i.e. what depends on them so you can resolve the conflict more easily.
In case somebody else is reading this: It would have probably worked this way:
pacman -Rdd mesa-full
pacman -Su
pacman -S mesa-full # resolve conflict manually -
I have an older desktop where the majority of our itunes library is. I have been using a new laptop where I have downloaded new music to our same itunes account. Today I turned the desktop on and turned on HOME Sharing in itunes, where the music did show up on my laptop. I clicked to select all songs but the import button was not highlighted and would not allow me to click it. So I decided to update the operating system to the most current on my desktop, since it has not been used/updated for over a year. Now Itunes will not even open when I click on it, it just bounces up and down and stops. I updated the flash player and that did not help. Now I cant open ITUNES and homeshare dissapeared on my laptop. My ultimate goal would be to get all the music for itunes off the desktop and on my laptop Can anyone please help me?
Do you get an error message when you try to open iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

Stated above, I have issues with Facebook and my iPad 2. I have updated the operating system, but the problem started before that. Can't click on like or enter comments. Problem started about a week ago. Sent email to Facebook and they responded that they don't answer individual emails but read them. Lots help that was.
Facebook is basically broken, at least as far as it pertains to mobile browsers. THey changed something in their coding and now mobile browsers don't work with facebook. ANd their app, well their app has been less than stellar for a long time.
Unfortunately, it's up to facebook to fix things, not apple. All you can do is find work arounds. Look for third party apps, I have one called Facely HD which seems to work reasonably well (even though it does seem to not see all posts). There may be others that work better. You can also simply not access facebook on your mobile until they fix it.
It's all on them and users can only be patient or find other ways to work around it. -
I would like to know what is the most recent version of the operating system that I can update to on my computer.
Thanks.Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
