HT4623 Contacting the iPhone activation server display

I waited 10 hours for ios 7.02 to download. Then up comes,'Contacting the iPhone activation server' display....for 5 hours! What am I supposed to do? Do I disconnect from iTumes and carry on? Or stay connected and wait til it contacts the iPhone activation server?

Hi ingerjay,
If your iPhone is still displaying that message, I would consider that symptom to fall under this troubleshooting article:

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.

    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • Message, "Contacting the iPhone activation server"

I've had that message up for the last hour, after 2 hours of "Accessing iTunes Store," and I'm assuming that the servers may be bogged down and that's why it's been stuck on it for so long. But that is the problem, can I unplug my phone and just try again later or will that screw something up?

I encountered the same problem with my new iphone 3GS last night while i was trying to update to os 3.0.1.(froxen connect to itunes screen-iphone stuck in recovery mode-and every attemt to perform the restore fuction resulted in the message "unknown error 3014"
After a lot of frustrating attemts to solve the problem using the solutions that were on apple's support site.I googled it and came up with this "http://blog.mcchouse.com/2009/08/iphone-os-301-update-error-3014.html that worked right away.It seems there is a servers issue that causes the problem.

When I went to update ios7 it came up as plus into iTunes. When I plug it into iTunes it's making me retire my phone but has been on "contacting the iPhone update server" for over a half hour. What do I do?

To clarify, I meant to say, when I plug my phone into my computer and connect to ITunes.

  • Hung on "contacting the ipad activation server"

I am trying to upgrade my ipad2 from 4.3.5 to 5.0.1.  It has downloaded everything, but seems to be hung (15 minutes so far) on "contacting the ipad activation server" "Contacting the iTunes store".  Be patient or restart?

Answered my own question. After letting it marinate in the background for a couple of hours, I had to force-quit iTunes. My phone was unaffected, and a subsequent attempt to restore has been successful.

  • Update hung up on "Contacting the iPhone update server

I got a message that my 5S needs an OS update, so I plugged into iTunes on my PC.  For an hour, the update has been hung up on "Contacting the iPhone update server."  What gives?

    Hello dj003,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iTunes is stalling when it attempts to contact the iPhone update server. In this situation I would recommend reading over and working through the troubleshooting steps outlined in the attached article.

  • IPhone activation server temporarily unavailable SOLUTION!

A lot of people, including me, were having this problem. I found a solution that wored for me! Here's what I did...
First, I pressed OK on the message about the iPhone activation server.
Second, I disconected my Internet Connection.
Third, I pressed Update on iTunes and it told me I needed Internet.
Fourth, I reconnected and pressed Update and it worked!
    I hope this helps!

That's almost always because the phone was hacked to unlock it.
You can not get help for a hacked or jailbroken phone here.

  • IPhone activation server temporarily unavailable

I'm trying to install iPhone OS 3.0, it downloaded just fine but when it came time to install the install failed because "The iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable". I have been retrying the install process constantly but have had no luck, is anyone else experiencing this issue? Any tips on how to accomplish a successful install?

This is a server-side issue, so there really isn't anything you can do besides waiting. Currently, there are a lot of people attempting to perform the activation which requires a 'green light' from an Apple server, and this server seems to not meet the demand. It's a shame that Apple did not prepare for the OS 3.0 launch properly - they knew there will be a lot of iPhone customers trying to upgrade right away and still failed to set aside enough computing power to perform activations.

  • The iPhone Software server could not be contacted

My friend just sold me his iPhone 3GS since he is buying a new one. He says that I need to update the OS version of the phone to iOS 6.0 by using iTunes.
I downloaded iTunes and tried to update it but it now says the error:
    /quote
The iPhone Software server could not be contacted.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
    /unquote
I have read some existing queries regarding the above error and I have did some of the workarounds mentioned but it is still not solved. My network settings are updated, network carrier is correct even the ICCID displayed is not blank.
Below are the data when my 3GS is connected in iTunes:
    Name: iPhone
    Capacity: 14.28 GB
    Software Version: 4.3.2
    In phone settings
    ICCID: 8963 0313 3180 7298 4798
    Carrier: SMART
    BTW im from the Philippines

Did you ever use your computer to hack or jailbreak any iOS device? If you did your hosts file is corrupted, and you will have to fix it. If you are sure you never used iOS hacking software of any kind then the previous post about antivirus is your next choice.

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

  • Stuck on contacting iphone activation server

i tried searching forum for answer and didn't find anything
trying to update to new iphone software on my 3G.
Seems to be stuck on contacting iphone activation server.
I have tried it several different days.
I have seen other websites say to turn off wifi after it starts contacting the activation server.
    That does not work.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you!

You need an active connection to the internet. So if you are using Little Snitch on the Mac or other Firewall make sure you open up ports.
If you wife can update and restore then using the same user, computer, internet connection, etc should allow you to update your iPhone as well.

  • HT201210 what if it says itunes could not contact the iphone software update server , what to do ?

what if it says itunes could not contact the iphone software update server , what to do ?

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.
