The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, as you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes as described half-way down the page that you posted from.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

If it's a first gen iPad then it should be update to iOS 5.1.1, if it's an iPad 2 (or 3) then it will update to iOS 6 (so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change). -

my ipad is version 5.1.1 gen 3 ipad , says software update available , when i accept click update download it gos about 1 minute then throws out a message An error occurred downloading 7.0.2 what should i do, so i hit reset no i have lost all , i cant even find my wifi its going from bad to worse please advise

As of today, iOS 7 is available for Apple devices. I went to settings, then to general, and to software updates, but it says at iOS 6.1.3 my iPad 2 is up to date. How can I download https iOS 7?
Well, now is probably not a good time to try it. The servers are overloaded, and if you look at most of the posts on this site right now, people are getting hung up at various points of their download and activation.
You need to hook your device up to the computer you sync with and download it via iTunes, or keep checking your device until you see IOS 7 is available.
But my advice would be to wait - otherwise you are just going to be frustrated, and unable to use your device....

If my iPhone and iPad both say I have 7.0.6 and under "General", "Software Update" I receive the message "iOS 7.0.6 Your software is up to date" can I assume that the security patch has been installed and activated?

i have an 14gb iphone4 and have been trying to install IOS5 but cannot seem to do it, when i go into general settings i don't have the 'software update' that is shown. Any tips on how to upgrade?
Go back to that article, ignore the instructions for updating it wirelessly, scroll down, and follow those for updating it from iTunes on a computer.

Maybe you have a beta version of iOS6 in your Ipad. if is this, you have to put the ipad in recovery mode in itunes and then the update will start.
To put the ipad in recovery mode, you have to turn of the ipad. In your pc/mac Itunes has to be running, and plug the cord, but when you do that you have to press the home button until a message shows up in itunes!!

My IPAD software update is avail for the iOS 7.0.3 I keep trying to install it. I have my IPAD hooked up to my MAC and the Wi FI, I have internet open It keeps telling me not connected to internet. What am I doing wrong.
You can try resetting your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists. -

ITunes stuck at preparing iPad for software update
As shown here, iTunes is stuck at "preparing iPad for software update."
It hsd been here for over 3 hours. The iPad itself seems normal and doesn't show a sync indication or anything else.
The is iTunes 11.1.3 (8) on Max OS 10.9 Mavericks.
The iPad is iOS 7.0.3.
I cannot quit iTunes, but as noted, the iPad appears to be normal, like nothing is really happening.
Suggestions?After being stuck in iTune with status bar saying preparig iPad... I went to the iPad where settings had a red 1 and I press and went into settings. It said that there was an update to the software waiting. I thought that was strange because I had started it from iTunes. so I went head and pressed to start the update from the iPad and it did it and completed the update in about 2 mintues. I know if I had unplugged the iPad or stop iTunes or rebooted it would have corrupted the iPad and I would have had to reload everything again. That's because it happen once before like that. So I hope this works you someone else out there...

Trying to update my ipad2 - went to Settings, General but I don't have a Software Download option. Now what?
Very old versions of the iOS prior to iOS 5 did not have the option to update over the air by using the Settings app. If your iOS is lower than 5.0 you need to update your iPad while connected to the computer you normally sync with.
First thing to do is start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for updates. Your iTunes must be version 11.1 so it you have and earlier version of iTunes on your computer update iTunes to 11.1.
Then start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in iTunes and select General or Summary in the right side panel. Do a backup of your iPad next.
Once the backup is complete click on Check for updates.
