HT4623 Forgot passcode for my iPad?

How do I change my passcode to my iPad?
I forgot my current passcode, I tried several times but I just can not remember it, so in order for me to use my iPad again, I need to change my passcode, but I do not know how to do it. Please help

If you forgot it, the only solution is to restore the whole iPad through iTunes. Power it off, then hold the Home button while plugging it into a computer running iTunes. This puts the iPad into recovery mode, and iTunes will allow you to restore the iPad.
Keep in mind - this will erase all the contents of the iPad, so be 100% sure you've tried all the possibilities.

  • Forgot passcode for my iPad but its not locked

I forgot my passcode for my iPad , it's not locked or disabled. Also I have not backed it up with pc or laptop

If it's not locked, and it doesn't require a passcode to use it, then you don't have a passcode. Also, if you don't have a backup then I suggest you use iTunes on your computer to make a backup before you have to restore it because you don't know your passcode.

i forgot my passcode for the ipad and i can't connect to iTunes because it keeps giving me error message that i have to unlcok the ipad first... any advice on how to restore the ipad or unlock it?

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
This will tell you how to restore

You will probably need to use recovery mode

  • My sister forgot her passcode for her iPad Mini

My sister gave up her iPad for a few weeks and decided to shut it off. When she turned it back on she forgot her code and couldn't get in. From past experinces I tried to restore it in order to unlock it, but I can't restore it unless "Find my iphone" is off. I went on to icloud.com to turn it off and erase the ipad from there. But, when I tried to erase it a message came up that said it won't erase until it's connected to wifi. The iPad can't connect unless it's unlocked. So we're stuck in this vicious cycle. Any advice would be appreciated! She has an iPad mini with iOS 8.

Try recovery mode and see if that's let you reset the iPad - there are instructions half-way down this page : Forgot passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

  • I forgot my passcode for my iPad. How do I retrieve it?

I forgot my passcode for my iPad. How do I retrieve it?

Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    2. Connect USB cable to computer, leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

Try and force the iPad Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

When I set my new iphone 6 up I changed the passcode and forgotten it.  I tried to restore from a back up from itunes but it says that "find my iPhone" on the phone needs to be turned off. Seriously? the solutions conflict against one another. I know a 4 digit code is simple to remember but I competely forgot and every time I try it's making my wait time longer!
    Does anyone have a solution?

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

  • I never set a passcode for my iPad but it is locked and I can't get it unlocked.  The "slide to unlock" does not work.  How do I get it unlocked?

I never set up a passcode for my iPad 2 but it is locked and I can't unlock it.  The "slide to unlock" does not work.  Any suggestions on how to unlock it?

You have to slide to unlock to bring up the keyboard if a passcode is set. If you can't slide then try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order
