HT4623 Help updating iPhone to iOS6

I updated my own iPhone 3GS wirelessly OK, but when I did the same for my wife's iPhone 4, it said I have to connect to iTunes. Which would be OK except we are on holiday in Cyprus with no laptop. Anything I can do to get round this till we return home? I'm in trouble as phone will not work otherwise...!

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, you need to get a sim card from the carrier the phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, if you want to activate it. Because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.
Apple has started to get "tough" with hacked iPhones, & simply won't permit their activation.

Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

If your iPhone doesn't power on, these steps can help:

Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.

Tried plugging it in but has been on charge for about an hour now and it's still not turning on? Pls help... Tried the home button and the on/off button together but still no joy

First try a Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least Ten seconds... (But can take Longer)... until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to Your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.

Help updating IPhone software

Hi - Im having trouble updating my iPhone software via iTunes. I clicked on the "update" tab but get an error msg: iTunes could not contact the iPhones software update server because you are not connected to the internet.
My internet connection works fine; and I can download songs from the iTunes Store without any issues.
Grateful for any help or suggestions.

I've ensured that iTunes is allowed to pass through the Windows firewall. I've also tried downloading the software with the fireall deactived completely. As said- I dont have any issues downloading mp3s via iTunes - just the iphone software.

How can I update my iTunes to 10.6.3 from 10.5.2?
The Genius Bar will not fix my iPhone 4 unless my software is updated (to iOS6), and iTunes will not update my iPhone software unless iTunes is updated.
I cannot update to iTunes 10.7 b/c I am running MacOS 10.5.8, and when I check for an update on the OS the search shows that there is none available.

I need help updating iPhone 4 OS 5

Ugh! I've been trying to update my iPhone 4 for the last 5 hours! The first time I tried to do it I lost all my contacts but I still have them somewhere on my computer. Now I have a grey screen that says iPhone on it and when I unlock it, it goes to the set up screen asking if
1. "set up as new iPhone" - which I DONT want to do
2. "restore from iCloud back up" - which then prompts me to either choose set up as new iPhone or Restore from iTunes
3. "restore from iTunes" -which I tried but it goes to the screen with the USB cord with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo.When it's plugged in it makes no difference. It says on my computer that it's working but no difference on the phone.
How do I fix this without losing everything???? Help!

iPhone 4 has ios 5 and finally decided to update it. Did it over wi-fi and after it downloaded the pic insert usb to itunes popped up. Clicked restore and update and After the software downloaded nothing happened. it went back to the orignial screen with the pic still in recovery mode telling me to connect usb to itunes. Everytime I update something horrible happens!!! You think i would have learned my lesson by now ugh!!! HELPPP!

If your iPhone is stuck in recovery mode, you can restart your device. Then try updating the iOS software again.

How can i get around this, or remove the jailbrake and update?

You state your iPad has been jailbroken, so we can't help you in this forum.
You may have "bricked" your iPad and now have an $$$ paper weight. Plus your Apple warranty has been voided and the Apple Genius Bar/Support will not help you.

PLEASE HELP; Updating iPhone 4 without losing apps or data

Hi,
I want to update my iphone 4 but when I try it notifies me that I will lose the apps that are currently on the phone. This is after I've synced my iphone with the iTunes on my mac in order to back it up.
If I click to sync Apps through iTunes, it tells me it will delete what is on the phone to match what is saved on my computer (there are apps saved on the computer which I have since deleted off my phone..!) So how do I back up my phone apps and save them from being deleted when I update the operating system?
I remember when macs were quite straight forward and simple to use, but now I am almost always confused when I try to do something!!

Sync Apps under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes should have been selected from the start and remain selected. This way after downloading an app direct with your iPhone the app will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so. And you can download an app with iTunes on your computer, select the app under the Apps tab folllowed by a sync to install the app on your iPhone. To remove an app from your iPhone without deleting the app, deselect the app under the Apps tab followed by a sync. To reinstall the app on your iPhone again later, reselect the app under the Apps tab followed by a sync. If you restore your iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed, all apps are in your iTunes library to be reinstalled on your iPhone.
With your iPhone connected, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
After confirming all apps on your iPhone are now in your iTunes library, select Sync Apps followed by making sure all apps on your iPhone are selected below before sycning.
