If it is a 3GS you cannot update it to 4.3, you can only update it to iOS 6. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer, connect the phone, click on its name on the left, then click the "Check for Updates" button on the right.
If you can't connect to your home WiFi try rebooting the router.

Your 3GS can happily update to the latest iOS 6.1.3.
Unless it is actually an iPhone 3G, in which case it bottoms out at 4.2.1.

Can't update iPhone 3GS to 4.3.3

iTunes prompts me to download and update my iPhone, I choose to do so. When it's completed downloading and stuff, it says that my iPhone isn't eligible for the requested build.
This seems odd, I've had this problem before and I fixed it by updating iTunes, this time iTunes is already up to date.
Also, if it truly isn't eligible then it shouldn't prompt me to update it. The device compatibility list in the update info thingy says that the iPhone 3GS is compatible.
Suggestions?

Lawrence Finch, none of those conditions apply to me, and the nearest Apple store is in Charleston, SC, about 1:30 away from where I live. I'd rather wait until June 6th, when I'll be getting an iPhone 4. (It has actually been jailbroken in the past, but I decided that the cons outweighed the pros of jailbreaking so I unjailbroke it a long time ago.)

Okay, my internet went down for a few minutes there, so this post was delayed. (Which was odd, because I don't usually have internet issues, just network issues.)
I never changed the hosts file on this computer, only on a different, Windows Vista, one, which I no longer use for syncing my iPhone.

Ahhh, the mysteries of software updating...glad it is working for you now. Sometimes you just have to be persistent until iTunes figures out you aren't going to go away.
So, are you now updating the iPhone to iOS 5.0.1?
If you already have 5.0 and a wireless connection you don't need to use iTunes to update to 5.0.1...the wireless update only means a file of about 38 MB, while via iTunes it is the entire iOS and about 730 MB...big time difference.

It is not physically possible to update an iPhone 3G to iOS 6. The highest version of iOS it will run is 4.2.1.
If, on the other hand, it is actually a 3GS, it can run iOS 6.1.6
Have you considered doing what it's telling you to do and connecting it to your computer running iTunes?

yes there is a sign on the top of the screen that shows phone is LOCKED....may be that is why the phone didn't recognizing the sim...i think first i need to unlock it again then hopefully phone wil start working again ..but i dont know HOW TO UNLOCK ???...need help from u guys with this .
