If an update is available there will be an active Update button. If you are current,
then you will see a gray screen with a message saying your are up to date.

Can't find the software update in my setting
Software Update from the iPad came with iOS 5. If you still have iOS 4 on your iPad, you will need to connect the iPad to iTunes on a computer to get the iPad updated to iOS 5 (or shortly iOS 6). Once you have iOS 5 or later, you can then perform future updates directly from the iPad, though if you don't use iCloud to make backups, I still recommend updating through your computer so you get a backup there.

iTunes, you must Update or Restore the Firmware to iOS 5.1.1 the first time (to system 5) with iTunes. After that you can update via the Air.

If it's not available within Settings->General->Update, have patience. The Apple servers in your area don't have it for your region yet.

I may be completely wrong, but I think you may need iTunes 10 to update to 6.0 or 6.0.1. I'm also not completely sure what firmware the built-in update feature was implemented, so if all else fails, check the General tab in Settings to see if you can update from the iPhone itself.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

You must not have yet installed iOS 5 on your iPad, so there is no "Software Update" button. -

I'm trying to update my iphone 4s but can't find the "software update" option on my phone.
In all of the instructions it indicates to go to settings, general, and then software updates. When I go to settings, and then general.....there is no software update option for me after that. Any idea as to where that would be? I've never "updated".

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

If you have lion and iPhoto '11 (latest version is 9.2.1) you can set up and turn on iCloud there and if you have IOS 5 on your mobile then your mobile devices will sync with your Mac
