If disabled because of a passcode, and you have not synced AFTER setting the passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it as a new device. All data on your phone will be erased:

Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. If there is a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. If there isn't a lock symbol then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. -

Only the carrier your phone was locked to in France can authorize the official unlocking of your phone. So contact them as to cost/procedure.

Can a Sprint Iphone 5 work with T-mobile network? How can one unlock with the MSL code? Sprint is not abiding by the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act. FCC will only enforce if we file more complains.
T-Mobile is a GSM network whereas Sprint is a CDMA network. They are incompatible. Sprint is not obliged to unlock a phone that is still under contract. Their phones may not be capable of being unlocked.

Your cousins phone was therefore not, in fact, factory unlocked. An iPhone sold directly by Apple as unlocked will never lock because of an iOS update.
An iPhone unlocked by going through proper procedures and channels with the carrier to whom it was originally locked will never lock again because of an iOS update.
An iPhone hacked to unlock it (which is unlocked by ANY other means then the first two) will lock again whenever iOS is updated.
If I had to guess, I would say 90% of privately sold iPhones sold as "unlocked" are in fact merely hacked to unlock them, and WILL relock when updated.
Some iPhones sold in Europe are also sold as "SIM free" and contract free, but do in fact lock to the carrier of the first SIM inserted in them. No contract, or "SIM free" does not mean unlocked. -

Hi Kilted Tim, thank you for your quick response.
Yup, I've had the unlimited plan for about 4-5 years, and I do everything I can to keep from losing it, for obvious reasons.
As you advise, I've been using the iphone in airplane mode with wifi activated which works fine when I am in wifi range. But of course when I'm out and about I want to use my data roaming for internet, maps, skype, whatever so I take it out of airplane mode.
The trouble is that I get incoming calls and am charged international rates even when I dont answer. I havent looked lately but I think AT&T charges me for one minute even for unanswered incoming calls.
Any ideas?

You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. It simply means you can only use the cellular network of the carrier it is locked to. -

To wipe phone
Turn off imessage in settings/messages
Turn off Facetime in settings/Facetime
Delete icloud account in settings/icloud
Erase all data and settings in settings/general/reset
