If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Connect your phone to the computer you use for itunes normally, then click on update when you are in itunes , BUT, this will update you to ios 6.0.1 because its the latest update. You can not pick whick update to go to. It will only go to the lateset update, which , by the way, will be compatible with your apps.

i need help updating my 3gs i cant get it to update past ios 4.2 and not many apps are compatiable inless i have ios 5.0 or greater can anyone help?
The iPhone 3G will not upgrade past iOS 4.2.1, but the iPhone 3GS is supported up to iOS 6.1.3. Are you sure you have a 3GS and not just a 3G?

If the iPad already has iOS you can go to Settings>gener>wifi update and update via wifi. Otherwise yu will have to connect to iTunes and update via iTunes.

You cannot update your operating system to anything other than the current one, which is iOS 6.0. The safest way to do that is to download it in iTunes on your computer. After the download is complete, you can connect your phone and update it. Allow a number of hours for each procedure.
