HT4623 I am trying to restore my phone and itunes is sitting on Preparing device 2 hours now
My phone got stuck during an update and now I have to restore it. it is now sitting on preparing Iphone for update.

If it is done and just froze, then Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart. Usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons.
If still a problem. Then Restore again. I would reboot computer. Then open iTunes on computer. Then connect iPhone to computer. Then hold both Home and Power buttons until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. Usually takes about 20 seconds time of holding both buttons. Then Restore the Firmware. -

You could order the Full Retail Version of OS X (Black DVD with a silver X on it). Regarding always starting up in Open Firmware, in this thread a bloke had the same problem until he disconnected his peripherals before restarting. See if the entire thread helps:

im trying to restore my iphone and itunes doesnt allow it to restore without updating. problem is that i have the latest update on my iphone so why is it forcing me to wait for a 7hr update download when i already have the update and only need to restore?
Sadly, the iPhone 3G can not be upgraded beyond iOS 4.2.1.

I've been trying to restore my phone the whole day and every time that's about to finish the extration this message comes up " The iphone cannot be restored at this time because the iphone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable"
Do anyone know if there's a way to fix this? It's in DFU mode so I can't do anything with it anymore, i have no phone.

Maybe you should check your HOSTS file to make sure nothing is stopping you from contacting Apple's servers - though if you're not looking to update you might still be out of luck. Also, maybe disable IP blacklist apps like PeerBlock just in case they're interfering with your connection to Apple.

I had to wipe my phone clean because of storage issues. It kept saying I didn't have enough storage for pics or apps, but I only had about 75 pics and 1 extra app. So, I backed up my iPhone on icloud and itunes, then cleared off my iphone using the steps in the settings. Then, when I am going back to restore my iPhone using iTunes back up and iCloud backup, it fails in both locations. It says it failed to be completed.

I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive. so i felt sort of ok. but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted. it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it. my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this. i have 10 years of photos and videos. so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup. i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups. i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all! do you know why that is? all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful. thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash. especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed. any answers you have would be great. thank you.

If the backup you're trying to restore from is encrypted, you will not be able to use that backup if you can't remember the encrypted backup passcode.
If on a Mac, & you elected to save the passcode to your Keychain, you can recover the passcode from your Keychain. Otherwise, your backup data is unrecoverable.
While you can continue to sync/backup, if you can't remember it & want to remove it, you'll have to delete your existing backups, & restore your phone as a new device. Your data will be unrecoverable.
You delete your existing backups here: iTunes>Preferences>Devices. -
bought a second hand iphone that worked fine untill i tried to restore to factory settings and put a simcard in. now tring to restore the software, but everytime it comes up with an error message half way through with the code 1015 on the end. anyone knows what this means??

Has the firmware been modified before you updated the iOS? If yes, this error could be a result of a jailbreak. -
I have been trying to use my Apple ID password but it is not valid for the request.
You were prompted for a password the first time you backed up after checking "Encrypt backup". It has been using the same password ever since. If you have a corporate MS Exchange account on the phone and the administrator required the phone to be encrypted then that also resulted in the backup being encrypted, but again you would have been prompted for a password the first time you backed up after installing the Exchange account. So think back and start trying passwords that you might have used in response to a password prompt at that time, especially if you didn't read the request carefully.

It's hard to tell what password you are referring to. But my guess is you are being asked for the password to the iPhone's backup you created in iTunes. It sounds like you chose to encrypt the backup.
If that is the case, the following applies:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

Is there a way to retrieve your password for a backup? I got a failure message while updating to iOS 7 and my phone has none of my info and apps on it and I need the password to use an older backup file to restore it.
If you are referring to the password used for an encrypted backup, and if you don't recall the password, then you can't restore the backup. There's no way around it.

My iPhone 4S was stolen, so until I could get or buy another, I am using my husband's old 3GS. When I connect to iTunes, the left column recognizes the phone. Then I see the Setup page. It asks whether you have a new phone to add, or restore from a previous backup of my original 4S. I click restore from back up and click continue. It restores the 3GS, but the page doesnt move on to the next step. I have restored multiple times. The page/screen stays the same. What should I do? Am I doing something wrong?
You could follow the instructions in the support document that you linked from. There is a section regarding the passcode and the inability to use it or enter it. However, you may encounter more issues since you cannot use the screen.
