If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Since I can't upgrade my iPad 1 to iOS 6, is it now vulnerable to security threats?

Since I can't upgrade my iPad 1 to iOS 6, is it now vulnerable to security threats?

According to my brief search on the support site, there is some discussion on this very topic.  No operating system is completely secure!!  Read http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5503  for iOS 6 security content.  Since Apple does not want to provide support for the iPad 1, I have now stopped doing anything online that requires a password or other sensitive data.  No more new apps or upgrades to my present apps.  It has gone from a fantastic piece of technology to a toy in two years.

How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • How many times can you upgrade your ipad mini?

i have the ipad mini, and i would like to know, how many times you can upgrade? reason being the 3rd gerantion ipodtouch only upgrades once. for an ipad mini can i upgrade more than once, because it would be fair

There is no limit to the number of times an iPad can get an iOS update. Eventually though the iOS will evolve beyond the capabilities of the specific iPad. Tis is already the case for the original iPad. That iPad can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1 and no further. So far all iPads after that continue to receive updates when Apple releases them.

  • I can not upgrade my ipad 2 4.33 to ios 5.0.1 or 5.1

I have ipad 2 and iphone 4 devices but from 2 days can not update my Ipad 2 to ios 5.1  the first error was 3194  after fix this error, it's show preparing ipad to update... and after several minutes error 1604.. And can't fix this. Why must to be so difficult every process with apple devices. I am using apple devices from 2004 and its going to harder every day to use them.

Thanks, I had a outdated version of iTunes, I update it and now it lets me upgrade to ios 6,I feel like such a dummy.
    Thanks

  • I can't upgrade my iPad 2 software from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.1

Hi I wonder if anyone of you could help. I have an iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 and can't upgrade to iOS 5.1. The problem I am having is when I check for an update on my iPad it takes ages and then I get a message saying that it was unable to check for an update. Then when I tried to update it via my Mac its cant get passed the "contacting the iPad software update server..." had this message for half an hour now. I am assuming that apples servers are really full with everybody trying to update their iOS device. Is this the logical expenation and is anyone else having simular issues?
    Thank You,
    Richard Bray

After a few tries on Thursday, March 8, I was able to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1 using iTunes on my PC. However, when I next tried to update my iPad, I had the same error response about not being able to contact the update server.
After disconnecting all my USB devices and rebooting the PC several times, I gave up. Tried again on Saturday, March 10, and was finally able connect after several more unsuccessful attempts. Don't know if it was really necessary, but after I turned off both my Norton Smart Firewall and Anti-Virus Autoprotect, I finally got a connection.
I remember having similar hassles downloading iCloud and getting it working with the Apple mail servers.
I wish Apple could communicate better when the servers are jammed. The web page I was sent to when I clicked "More Information" in the window notifying me that the server connection failed, doesn't mention the possibility that the servers are jammed and we should just wait a few days and try again.

  • Can we upgrade a ipad with ios6 to ios7?

    i have a ipad 3 with ios6.
is it possible to upgrade the ipad device to ios7?
if it is not possible to upgrade can we re-install the device with ios7?
    br,

Anything you may see out there now about updating to IOS7, don't.
All that's approved is for those with developer accounts to install and experiment with the new OS, basially looking for bugs. But if a person who's not a developer finds a copy and installs it, they run the risk of bricking their device and can void their warranty by installing unapproved software. (iOS7 will onlybe approved when you can update it via iTunes or the software update option on your iPad)
When it's officially released 'this fall' you'll know.

  • Can I upgrade my iPad 2 16gb to IOS 8

I want to upgrade my iPad 2 to IOS8 I can't afford to upgrade to a new iPad at the moment. But I have upgraded my iPhone to the iPhone 6.
I've tried manually deleting apps etc to free up enough space but I can't seem to free up enough space. If I was to perform a factory reset on my iPad would this free up enough space so that I could upgrade the IOS
Be grateful for any advice. help, thoughts on this one
    Cheers

If you erase all your data from the device, it should; alternatively, you can update it from iTunes on a computer.
