HT4623 i don't have the "software update" button in the general settings bit on my unlocked iphone 3GS? how do i update my iphone 3gs?

i have an unlocked iphone 3gs, and i want to update it. it doesnt have a software update button in the settings section under general. how do i do it? would i have to plug the iphone into the computer of the person who used it before i did? please help!

Plug it into itunes with the USB cable.  The over the air update feature is a new feature, not part of iOS4, so you do not have it to use until you update.

I don't have a software update under my General settings on my IPad or IPhone 4 and I want to update to 5 IOS

If you update, an iPad 1 will update to iOS 5.1.1. Other iPads will update to iOS 6.0.1.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT4623 I don't have a software update option on my iPad 2. How do I install IOS 6?

How do I install? Also how do I get the software update button to appear in my settings option?

If you are running an iOS version under 5.0 you will not have the update software option show up in settings>general. You will need to download the newest version of iTunes from iTunes.com and install it on your computer if running Windows, if using a Mac you need at lest OS X 10.6.8 to install the newest iTunes from the software update. Once you have iTunes installed on your system just plug in the iPad and it was let you know that an update is available for download and install to the iPad. Make sure you do backup/sync your iPad before updating to the newer iOS.

  • HT4623 I don't have a software update option and my IPod is not wanting to connect to a secure device. I have it hooked to my wifi in the house and currently to the computer.

My IPod (model and type below) will not use the WiFi connection that I have looged on to it continues to tell me that it can't use anything without a secure connection. Also it will not allow me to update to see if maybe that is the issue. I do not even have an option to click update,.
    Thank you for your help.

Your model MB528LL ipod is a 2G and can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1. many apps now require 4.3 or later.
You said "will not use the WiFi connection that I have looged on to it continues to tell me that it can't use anything without a secure connection."
Just what are you doing when you get that message and what is the exact wording of the error message?

  • HT4623 i don't have a "software updates" button between "about" and "usage"

cannot update apps, need ios 5 or better.  now have 4.3.5  iPad 2

There are some steps half-way down this page : Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Before starting the update copy any purchases over to your computer's iTunes library via the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option. And preferably take your own copy of any important documents and/or photos that you have on the iPad - they should be included in the backup but it's best to have your own copy just in case.
    Copying photos : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
To copy documents you might be able to use file sharing on your computer's iTunes : iOS: About File Sharing
or you might be able to copy them off via your wifi network or by emailing them to yourself - different apps supports different ways of copying content to/from them.

Updating from the ipod itself is a feature of ios 5 or later.
You would need to update as always.  Turn on computer, open itunes, connect ipod.
The first gen ipod will only go to 3.1.3

How to Upgrade to iOS 7
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
        1.    If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
        2.    Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
        3.    After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
        4.    If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
        5.    After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
        6.    From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
        7.    After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
        8.    After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

I don't have the "software update" in general setting .. How can I update my iPad ?

Software updates to iOS can only be done from the iPad when you have iOS 5. You will need to update through iTunes to get the latest version, after which you will be able to update directly from the iPad if you wish.

I don't have the software update option in my settings. How can I update my phone so I can download apps?

Are you referring to updating the iOS? Software update for the phone has nothing to do with downloading apps. The only time the OTA software update for the phone iOS was after iOS 5. If you are looking to update applications, then go to the App store and select updates.
