I don't have the "software update" in general setting .. How can I update my iPad ?
Software updates to iOS can only be done from the iPad when you have iOS 5. You will need to update through iTunes to get the latest version, after which you will be able to update directly from the iPad if you wish.

I don't have the software update option in my settings. How can I update my phone so I can download apps?
Are you referring to updating the iOS? Software update for the phone has nothing to do with downloading apps. The only time the OTA software update for the phone iOS was after iOS 5. If you are looking to update applications, then go to the App store and select updates.

i have an unlocked iphone 3gs, and i want to update it. it doesnt have a software update button in the settings section under general. how do i do it? would i have to plug the iphone into the computer of the person who used it before i did? please help!
Plug it into itunes with the USB cable. The over the air update feature is a new feature, not part of iOS4, so you do not have it to use until you update.

I am trying to update my Iphone4 to IOS6 but when I go to Settings>General> I don't see "Software Update" option. How can I update my phone?
You do not have that option with iOS 4. You must update using iTunes.

HT4623 I don't have the software update as a choice. where can i get it?
I would like to update my software but the option is not showing as available on my phone under settings. What should I do?
The iPhone will tell you when there is an update ready to be installed. Or it will do it by itself.
Thanks:)

I want to update my ipad216GB to iOS.5 but i don't have the software update option in it so how do I update it to iOS.5
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

I don't have the software updates in my general settings so how do I get the updates to use instagram, Facebook etc? Any help appreciated
The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
