If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
iPad Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

I want to be able to update latest iOS but I don't have the software update section under the setting, what do I need to do?
The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Also read the instructions from the section entitled "Update your device using iTunes" at the link below.

I don't have the "software update" in general setting .. How can I update my iPad ?
Software updates to iOS can only be done from the iPad when you have iOS 5. You will need to update through iTunes to get the latest version, after which you will be able to update directly from the iPad if you wish.

I don't have the software update option in my settings. How can I update my phone so I can download apps?
Are you referring to updating the iOS? Software update for the phone has nothing to do with downloading apps. The only time the OTA software update for the phone iOS was after iOS 5. If you are looking to update applications, then go to the App store and select updates.

HT4623 I don't have the option to do software updates on my Settings/General menu.
I don't have the option to do software updates on my Settings/General menu. How do I get updates?
GMThis option was added to the iOS with version 5. If you have an earlier version of the iOS on your phone you need to start iTunes on the computer you normally sync with and connect your phone to the computer. Select your phone in iTunes and select Summary in the row of tabs presented. Scroll down under Summary to find Check for Updates.

Which iPod Touch you got!?
If you are on iOS 5 you should be able to find it in Settings -> General -> Software Update
If not, first, make sure you've got the latest version of iTunes.
After you got the latest version, connect the iPod and hit the update button. iTunes will download the latest iOS for your iPod depending on it's generation.
3rd, 4th Generation - iOS 5.1.1
2nd Generation - iOS 4.2.1
1st Generation - 3.1.3
This should solve your issue -
Hi. I have an iphone4 and can't update my iOS. I don't have "software update" as a option under general settings. How do I update my phone?
If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPhone to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).
