iPhone 3G is up to date with iOS 4.2.1, that is the highest this iPhone will go. If it is lower than 4.2.1 update to 4.2.1 is performed with iTunes on computer.

iOS version prior to ios 5 do not include a way to update the iOS over the air on the device itself. You must use iTunes on the computer you normally sync with to complete the update.
Start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for updates. If an update to iTunes is available download and install it.
Then start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone. Select your iPhone in the left column of iTunes and select General in the right column. Scroll down to find Check for Updates. -

There is an updated version number 10.7.0.21 that is available if you go to the iTunes link here on Apple.com. It won't show up under Apple Software Update and if you check for updates via iTunes it likely won't show either.

I have an iPhone 4. I recently updated. It loaded all my iTunes music purchases but not the music I had on my computer. This music was on my iPhone before I updated. I have tried re-sycing but not getting anywhere. Says it cannot locate my music files but I see it on my lap top but cannot play it or get it on my iPhone. Can anyone walk me through this?

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data. Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

Thank you. I did try this, but the Apple Server would not connect, indicating that the network would not allow connection. I checked the set-up, there did not seem to be anything wrong. The network is Wi-Fi, high speed, and the interactions to iTunes work except when trying to do the iOS update. So, I think it is time for a trip to the nearest Apple store. Thanks again for the help.

4.2.1 is the end of the line for the 3G. It was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. You will need to buy a new phone if you want to use that app (and many others) if you don't already have an older version saved in your iTunes library.

Thanks for the question. If you haven't already done so, you may want to update iTunes to v11.1 (released on Sept 18th). After updating iTunes, you can then update your iPhone 5 to iOS 7.
