With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Why do I keep getting a Storage almost full warning?

I have more than 3G of data available in my cloud storage and more than 2G of space on my iphone 4.  Why do I keep getting a storage is almost full warning whenever I play my music?

If you are referring to a 16GB phone, then you do not have 16GB available. The device only has about 12.75GB available after iOS. You can see how much space you have available by going to Settings>General>About, or you can connect the device to the computer and iTunes and look at the report there.

  • Movies on ipad will not play - get the storage almost full message?

I have a number of movies on my ipad showing in Videos, most on stored on icloud (i think).  I can start playing the movies but within a few seconds they stop and I get a message say "Storage Almost Full".  I thought by storing the movies in the cloud I am saving space on my ipad and can access and play those movies any time.  What am I doing wrong?

  • Storage almost full warning since upgrading to 7.1.1 Help?

Hello, I have an 8GB iPhone 4 and I have been getting the "storage almost full" warning for the last couple of days. It only began after upgrading to 7.1.1. I've done a hard reset/restore twice and the message keeps coming back. I generally keep at least 1GB free and after attempting to only put 3GB of music back on the phone it happened again. Please help!

Sadly this is a bug that I have been able to relicate on 3 different devices, and that has NOT been fixed by 7.1.2
To replicate, you need an "oldish" device (iPhone 4 & 4S, iPad 2 & Mini), and an iTunes match subscription with quite a few songs.
    Start from a clean slate:
    - Switch off iTunes match (settings / apps store or music)
    - Kill all apps
    - Reboot
    - Reset (home +power until apple appears)
Check available space on settings / general / about
    Then:
    - Activate iTunes match
    - Play some non locally stored music
    - Wait
Yesterday, it took 1h for my iPad mini with 5.3GB available to show the "storage almost full" message and 0 bytes available
Note that I have tried with a full reset and it does not change anything.
    To solve the problem:
    - Switch off iTunes match
    - Reset
The memory is now back (but I cannot use iTunes match)

  • I have an iphone 3GS and suddenly am getting a "storage almost full message" even though I have 1.4 GB of free space. Now I cannot text.  How do I trouble shoot this?

I have an iphone 3GS and suddenly am getting a "storage almost full message" even though I have 1.4 GB of free space. Now I cannot text.  How do I trouble shoot this? I recently upgraded to version 6.1.3 if that helps.

When you sync using iTunes on your computer, do you see a lot of "Other" at the bottom of the iTunes Summary Page for your iPhone?  If you do, try a "Restore iPhone ...".  That should help.
Hopefully that would do it for you.  If not, the next (more drastic) step would be to restore again as above, but choose "Restore as New" and then manually sync.  Omit any apps that might be suspcious in their space use (primarily Game Center apps).

  • My phone keeps saying the storage is full so I deleted pictures, apps, and all my texts. Then after I do this my phone freezes and I have to restart it. When I restart my phone then everything I deleted comes back. What is going on?

    HI Shelby,
It sounds like your available free space is not reporting properly. I would start by quitting the Settings app:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Can't take photos and prompt keeps appearing saying STORAGE ALMOST FULL, YOU CAN MANAGE STORAGE IN SETTINGS but get stuck once I go to settings

Can't take photos on my iPad and the prompt keeps appearing, STORAGE ALMOST FULL YOU CAN MANAGE STORAGE IN SETTINGS. Which I do but don't get any further!

Do you have a computer around?  You could try plugging your iPad in and deleting uneeded apps, songs, movies, etc. using iTunes.

  • HT1688 I have an iPhone 5 16 GB.. It keeps popping up "storage almost full." I have a lot of music, but I've had to get rid of all my apps and pictures. I now cannot download new songs either, becuase I do not have enough storage. Do I have to buy a 32gb?

My iPhone 5 is a 16GB. The storage is almost full. Is there a way to add more storage, or do I have to buy a 32GB phone? I've had to delete my pictures and apps. I also cannot download any new music, update apps, or purchase new apps.

Upgrading phones is between you and the carrier if you are wanting them to subsidize the phone. Otherwise you would have to purchase the phone at full price.
Transferring purchases from the phone to iTunes is done with the device is connected to the computer, and in iTunes selecting transfer purchases. Yes, that will yield more storage on the phone when doing that.

  • Keeps on saying storage almost full or full

This problem has recently started happing and I haven't got much on my computer:
Glee seasons X3 (20 episodes each season)
The sims 3 and 2 expansions
    Minecraft
    Microsoft
    Some Music
    917 Photos
My Macbook pro has 256 GB on and is saying 9 GB left
I'm starting to get worried because I make a lot of videos on iMovie and haven't been able keep them.
Would an external hard dive work? If so how many GB's?
    Thank you
(Ps. I making Sims youtube videos which means I'm installing more expansions onto my computer. Is that going to effect my laptop significantly?)

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

i cannot activate my iphone im getting message server unavailable... when i try to activate with i tunes it says there is no sim

This is how I fixed it on my new iPhone 5S. Using the standard yahoo setting on my phone.
You will have to access  "managing your app passwords" on your account profile for yahoo. Generate password for your app. For example: "My iPhone 5S'
Go to your Iphone and set up your yahoo mail account on your phone the normal way and you have to use the generated password.  instead of the yahoo account password.

One of the http "strings" includes chrome which I have never, to my knowledge, loaded. There are several others, none of which include any Foxfire or Mozilla extensions.

    Every time Firefox opened

  • Storage Almost Full Alert

OK; I get a Storage almost full alert; and so I remove 25 songs; 15 apps, 50 photos, to free up space; but I KEEP getting the Storage almost full alert; even after rebooting.
Whats going on; do I need to change some itunes settings?

You may need to remove more apps/music/photos or the message refers to the space for backups/memory in your iCloud account. You get 5Gb free but you can pay for more.

Please do not recommend OmniDiskSweeper without the appropriate caution.
OmniDiskSweeper is a useful utiity, but it needs to be handled with care. You will see many large files and directories which you will not understand the purpose of and the deletion of which will totally wreck your system.
Use ODS by all means, but do not delete ANYTHING that is not a file you have personally created and only if you are sure you know what it is. Also backup your disk before going off to delete things which in the heat of the moment to free up space you think are not worth keeping, but which you may later regret not having.
The precautions are noted on the download site, which are there for people to read. Otherwise I do not see my post as mentioning deleting a single file, only (as per the instructions provided by the Developer's) to check where the large files were residing on the drive. Please do not add information to a post that was not included in the first place.
    Thanks
    Pete
