I'm trying to update my iphone 3gs from version 4.2 but under settings-general there is no update link. This is probably a frequently asked question, so I'm sorry but I'm new to this.

Hi, I upgraded my Iphone 3gs from version 4.1 to 6.0.1 but upon restarting, the sim card is no longer recognized, i cant restore with itune nothing at all!! i'm so confused and ****** off... please provide any help
Is the SIM from the carrier the device is locked to?
Has the device ever been hacked or jailbroken?
Have you tried simply removing and re-installing the SIM? What about replacing the SIM? -
My father in law has a brand new iPhone 5s using iOS 8.1.1 - under settings, general, keyboard, all keyboards... There is no option for 'predictive'. Has anyone else had this? And if so, how can we make it appear? Many thanks!

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

I have a iphone which has not been connected to the internet for a year and is on version 4 software but i cant seem to update it to a better version as most of my apps dont work on version 4
ThanksThis is the "ordernumber" it means it is a 3G indeed, not the 3Gs, and the 3G max iOS is 4.2.1.
It can only updated via the computer iTunes. -

That option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you are on iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off it via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Yes.
Updating from the iphone itself is ONLY available with ios 5 and above..
You update as always by opening itunes and connect the iphone. If there is an update available it will prompt you to update.
Your can ONLY updtae to the latest available software which is ios 6 -
