IM TRYING TO UPDATE MY IPHONE 4 I DONT KNOW HOW TO?
Plug it in to iTunes on your computer (at least iTunes version 10.7; preferably 11.0.1).
Sync your iPhone, then do "Check for Updates" on the right side of the iTunes display.

The picture is suggesting you plug your iPhone into iTunes on your computer using the USB cord.

my mum got given a iphone 3gs 16gb for christmas and it needed updating to 6.1.0 so we updated it but it just freezers when installing it all the screen is just the apple sign with a loading bar and stops half way thru can you help??
If you did a backup of the device prior to updating, you should not have a problem. What was the error?

I just got home from the Genius Bar; that graphic you see means you need to restore your settings. My 3GS seems to have bitten the dust though; would not restore but the guy said to try one more time from home computer -- now I can't get my PC to recognize my phone and can't get to a prompt to restore to factory settings. 8-(.

I had the same problem. My phone wasn't finding it so I tried plugging it into my laptop and it said I needed the latest iTunes which I already had.... I unplugged my phone from my laptop and did a soft reset to my phone (hold down the lock button and home button at the same time until your phone turns off) once it turns back on you should find the update... Click general... Software update. Worked for me!

Unless you set the device up for Wifi Sync, you will have to upgrade using iTunes. On the Summary page in iTunes, click the button Software Update.

Can anyone help. I tried to update my iPhone 4 this morning and it just got half way through the update and froze. I managed to turn it off eventually, but now all it will do is show the apple sign fading in and out and is un usable. It's not even being recognised as plugged into the laptop!!!!!!!

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

To update it all you need to do is connect the phone to iTunes and you can then update it.
If you are using anything less than iOS 5, then you can't update directly on your phone as this is not available and iOS 5 is the first OS where this option was available.
