I am using an I phone 4 , my phone is running  iOS 5 I want update and install but it's telling me that an error occurred whilst trying to update but it does not give me any other option except diismiss.

I suggest you turn off virus software on your computer and the firewall

    Make sure your iPad has at least 50% ( which I think is how much battery it says) or it can't update.
    I don't think that is you problem but just to be sure.

    It might be that the servers are overloaded with everyone trying to upload the update today.  Wait a little bit and try again later.  You might also try restarting your device if you don't see the option.

    I've just sync'ed my Iphone 4 and it said that newer versions of Itunes / QuickTime were available.  I updated these.
    When my phone was connected it the itunes told me a newer version of iOS 6.0.1 was available for my phone did i want to download and install.
    I ok'd it and itunes backed up my phone and then downloaded the iOS.  My phone was then in recovery mode - itunes wanted me to restore my phone so it would work with itunes.  When I look at the progress of update and restore it completes but my phone is left in recovery mode and I can not get it out of this state which means I can not reinstall my backed up data and essentially I'm left with a VERY EXPENSIVE paperweight!
    The phone was purchased originally from Apple factory setting unlocked.
    Any assistance gratefully recieved

    A Restore first downloads a new copy of iOS to your computer. On a slow Internet connection this can take a long time. How fast is your connection? How long would you expect it to take to download 900 MB?
    That's assuming nothing is interfering with the download. Some firewalls and antivirus programs will block the download or slow it down. So you should temporarily disable your security software. Security software can also block the update after the iOS download is complete.

    I can't get past the FIND MY IPHONE Screen after IOS update...it's like the continue button and or arrow aren't highlighted and don't allow me to select them so I can't move on.

    If it's showing the connect to iTunes screen then it sounds like it's gone into recovery mode and will need to be connected to a computer's iTunes in order to be reset. Does neither she nor you have a computer, and if she hasn't has she been backing up to the cloud instead ?
    Depending upon what country that you are in, and whether content is still in the store, she might be able to re-download some/all of her downloads via the Purchased tabs in the App Store and iTunes store apps

    I have updated my Iphone 5 to IOS 6 latest version (6.1.3) last week. Since then, Apple Maps doesn't display maps anymore on screen. GPS position and directions appear but on a blank screen. 3G and LTE aren't teh problem, iut works well with other apps and Google Maps. Is there anyone having the same issue ?

    You need to backup all and then restore your contents after you have reinstalled IOS6.
