HT4623 iphone 4 software update and not recognised

it has been ages since i last synced my iphone i have updated my itunes to 10.1. my pc is not recognising my iphone. I have tried to follow instructions to update software but there is no software update option in my general settings.
can someone give me a step by step of what i have to do pleaaase

READ the instructions in the link from which you posted.
It clearly states how to upgrade directly from the device (if running iOS5 or higher) or how to upgrade from iTunes on the computer if running iOS 4.
Also, update iTunes on your computer, iOS6 requires iTunes version 10.6 or higher.

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, if you want to activate it. Because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.

What IOS is running on your iPhone? Software upates on the phone are only there if you have IOS 5.0 or higher installed. To do updates with a lower IOS, you must hook it up to a computer and update through iTunes.

Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
Release the Buttons...

Are you connected to Wi-Fi...?

Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...

HT1758 Power failure in the middle of a software update and not the computer will not boot up. The computer just has a white screen with a grey apple and just loads non stop.

My iMac will not boot up after a software update. the screen is all whute will show a grey apple in the middle and will look like it is working but nothing happens; this can go on forever.

Do you have a backup in the form of a bootable clone or Time Machine? Restore that and then try the update again.

Another option might be to download the standalone from Apple Downloads on another Mac and try installing it in Firewire Target Disk Mode to the Mac that was interrupted during the update.

When I updated my iphone 4s several weeks ago, it caused my wifi button to gray out and become non-functional. Several apps also stopped working. Can this be fixed?

Not likely, But try, Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. See if better. If not, restore iPhone Firmware with iTunes 10.7 or 11 on computer. See if better. If not, and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

Old iPhone software updates and 3G

I heard that with the 3G release, there are some new updates (specifically around web browsing, email) that will benefit older iPhone users as well. This sounds surprising - I was under the impression that these enhancements were specifically tied to the 3G device.
Any info, pointers, or knowledge about this would be much appreciated!

Caching service only works for OS X updates and not for Apps

It seems that my OS X Server Caching service only works for Apple OS X Software Updates (in Mac App Store updates, when the icon of Mountain Lion appears). I see it in my logs in verbose mode when I download an Apple OS X Software Updates and not when I download an app in Mac Appstore.
So I'm sure my Caching service works but not for all downloads.
Why ? What's wrong with my server ?
I read in some blogs that Caching Server can work for iOS devices appstore too. I try to download some apps with my iphone but nothing happens in logs ...
Can somebody help me about the Caching Server ?

Have you jailbroken this device? This will make the iPhone not talk to the Software Update Server (that signs and accepts software updates) please refer to the following link? Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-11-07 17:52:33.
Still unable to detect the iPhone though.
