HT4623 IPhone 4S 16GB - other space consumed 3.8 GB

How can I clear space marked as " other"  in my iphone4s. The other space is consuming 3.8gb of the 16GB space. Deleted apps, cleared applications and messages , but no luck. Will it go away if I upgrade to IOS 7 ?

Just follow this article: iPhone other space. I took my space down by about 2GB. Hope it helps.

  • TS1503 I am now in the tortuous process of trying to resync my hundreds of songs back onto my iPhone; however, my "other" space did not go down even one bit. Any other suggestions?

I tried suggestions one, which is unsync music then add music back. And it didn't drop the "other space" at all. Any other ideas what this nearly 5 GB of my 16 could be and how I can fix this without doing a whole restore?

You need the version of iPhoto that you wan tot use installed and then follow the IPLM directions
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/downgrading%20a%20library%20to%20an%20ea rlier%20version%20of%20iphoto.html
Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto
If you have a library from a newer version of iPhoto that you simply want "downgrade" to an older version of iPhoto, the easiest way to do that is with the "Rebuild Library" command. You will want to be running iPhoto Library Manager on the machine that has the older version of iPhoto you want to convert the library to. This will create a new library and import the entire contents of the original library into the new one using the older version of iPhoto. As with any rebuild, there are some items that will not be included (most notably, hidden photos, books, calendars, and slideshows), but if you have none of these items or don't mind losing them in the downgrading process, then this is a decent option for converting a library to an older version.

  • Rented Movies Other Space?

I have rented a few movies and transfered them to my iPhone, but today when I "deleted" one before it expired, it is still on my iPhone, not as "Video" but as "Other" space. Will this go away after I sync the phone when the movie has actually expired? Because 1.34 GB of space is quite large on an 8GB iPhone, so this "Other" space will be needed in the future for "Music" and "Video" space.
Any suggestions or comments on why this occurs?

That 8.1 GB for "other" should be nowhere near that big. You may have had a sync that was corrupted and that is what caused the bloated "other" storage.
"Other" includes anything that is not music, apps, books, photos or media content. So that leaves things like your app data and documents, app settings, email settings and messages, text messages, Notes, calendar entries, Safari bookmarks and history - things associated with your apps but not the apps themselves.
Usually restoring the device is recommended in order to solve the "bloated other" issues. But before you restore your iPad, sometimes these simple quick steps can work.
Sync your iPad again, Restart your iPad or Reboot your iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Try those first and if they do not work, you will probably have to restore your iPad. You can restore from a backup at the end of the process and you should not lose anything at all - except for the nasty, bloated "other". You will want to backup before you restore. It is all explained here.

Restart the computer and the iPhone might resolve a backup issue. Also, try resetting the iPhone by holding both the sleep/wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo reappears. Afterward, attempt to restore again.
Before you restore,  consider a few other things... One particular onging thread regarding "other" data has users finding that text messages with photos and/or videos taking up the "other" space. Deleting those text conversations helps regain space. (Before deleting, transfer any photos and videos you want to keep to your camera roll or computer.) In addition, check for any deleted phone voicemail messages and delete those to as well as voice memos.
If you decide to restore, the recommendation is to restore as new phone because the backup probably has the "other" data.

  • HT4623 Trying to update my iphone to the newest version and need more space, want to delete the other space and can't find where to do that or what is even in it? please let m eknow so i can install the new software. Thank you

Want to empty the "other space on my I-Phone any new ideas?

Is there a "New" button at the top right of the Playlists section of Music?
There is no Edit button to delete music, swipe sideways on the song to reveal the delete button. Tap and hold on the artwork in Artists and albums to reveal the (X) button to delete. Or connect the iPad back up to iTunes on the computer and check your sync settings for music to ensure you are syncing the right content.

    No.

  • Other space in iPhone

Ahh. I've scanned so many threads and I've only made my problem worse. I have always synced using iTunes on my Macbook Pro, and was running out of space, so I backed up my pictures and deleted them off my iPhone. Then I noticed I had lots of 'Other' space. I tried deleting my email account off my phone, no difference, so I added it back. I deleted all my text conversations, nope. I restored my phone and the space went UP. From 3. something GB to 4.22GB. I tried someone's idea of Settings> General> Usage> Music and deleting it, it wouldn't let my songs play so I deleted my music and then re-synced it. I have a 16GB iPhone and while I know some software space is needed, 4GB is ridiculous. How can I get this off!!

Yes hun if you restore as new the phone will be wiped, but thats why i suggested transfering purchases and importing photos and syncing with the computer first. you will be able to get your things back.

  • IPhone "other" space taking up massive amounts of space even after restore?

I recently bought a 16GB iPhone 5 to replace my brick of an iPhone 4, and I put my most recent backup of my 4 onto my new 5. I didn't take storage into consideration with it being a brand new phone and all, but recently (a month later) I have been running into storage issues when I go to take a picture in the Camera app. It began to say that there was not enough storage to take a picture, so after a few attempts at making space on my phone I plugged it into the computer. I found out that the "other" category in the color-coded storage bar had a whopping 6GB of space, hogging all of my phone's memory. After reading a few forums/articles, I backed up the phone and restored it in hopes of reducing (or even eliminating) the "other" space that was plaguing my memory. After a restore from the backup, my storage bar read this:
    Capacity - 13.47GB
Audio - 0.01GB (voice memos from the previous backup)
Photos - 2.3GB (from the previous backup)
    Apps - 0.03GB
Other - 7.1GB (it seems that a restore from backup only made the "other" space worse)
    Free - 4GB
If I go to the Usage section on my phone's interface, the storage information reads:
    Storage
    3.9GB Available
    9.5GB Used
    Photos & Camera: 2.3GB
    Instagram: 23.2MB
What is up with the "other" space and why is it taking so much space on my phone?

This indicates corrupt files.  You will need to restore as new.

    thanks guy.
i' m Chinese. in china there has a UNICOM IPHONE 3GS.
my two friends buy the unicom 3gs, and when they connect to the itunes it haven't 'other' space or only 50MB. their 3gs are also 3.1.3 system.
for this reason. i am a little worried.
yeasterday i call the apple 800, they told me: maybe the version is different so the hardware maybe different.

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

I want to know how to get rid of the "other" space on an iPhone 4 that doesn't require you restoring your phone back to factory settings. I currently have the iOS 6.1.3 software update, I have 0.99 GB of Audio, 1.65 GB of Photos, 1 GB of Apps, 0.02 GB of Books, 2.8 GB of Other, and 0.02 GB of Free. Please help!

Should only be about 1GB and larger than this may indicate corrupt data

  • HUGE amount of yellow "Other" space being taken up on iPhone 4S. Please help!

I looked around the forum for a solution of the huge amount of yellow "other" space that is being eaten up on my iPhone 4S. Even after a restore, the yellow "other" space is taking up 7.1 GB of space on my phone, up from 6.5 which is what it was before the restore. What is going on? Usually I just erase some texts (I send a lot of pics to my hubby and mom,) erase some voicemails and it drops down to around 1 GB. But I've noticed since iOS 6, that hasn't worked. 7.1 GB is ridiculous. Is there ANY way at all to get rid of it without having to erase absolutely everything about my phone and start over from scratch, including downloading 40 apps all over again?
This seems to be a problem a lot of people have been having over the past few years, why has it never been addressed? There needs to be some sort of utility or something that cleans things up if they have problems with junk not getting deleted or corrupted files sticking around.

Ok, so I appreciate the suggestion that it may be a corrupted file. But have you noticed that I am not the only person having this problem? Actually look. It is a valid problem, and I'm not the only one having it. So asking for Apple to fix it really isn't wrong.

Obviously the problem is not new. And it isn't huge, but it is inconvenient and annoying. How are files getting corrupt so frequently that they are taking up 8 GB of space? There has to be a cause. And the fact that before iOS 6 happened, all I had to do was delete text messages and that would immediately fix it. Why has that changed?
Also, it's a crime to say the word Google? Sorry it offends you, that's what I used to search.

  • IPhone 3G 16gb Backing Up forever, takes over 2.5 hours, free space is 92%

I have an iPhone 3G 16GB. It is on OS 3.0.1. I have been trying to back up that phone for a while now on both iTunes 8.1 and iTunes 8.2. It gets stuck around 60% and never moves for a long long while - over an hour and half. Today, I won the battle of wits and found out that it takes over 2.5 hours to backup. The clincher is my iPhone is about 92% empty!!!
Any idea why it is taking such a long time? I have my iPhone password-protected, so the backup must be getting encrypted, I can understand. But even then, 2.5 hours for backing up about a GB is just not happening to a phone on this side of the millennium.

    some things to try:
if you are using a pc, try disabling any antivirus or anti malware software and try another sync... if it doesn't speed up disable the firewall and try a sync. remember to re-enable any of the above after you are done syncing.
if you are using a mac and have little snitch running disable it then close and reopen itunes and try again... don't forget to turn little snitch back on when done
if neither of those things work some have had luck removing the backup files from their machines (itunes -> Edit, Preferences -> Devices tab , select your backup and click "delete backup") close and restart itunes then force a backup manually (under devices in itune's main screen right click your iphone and choose "Back up")
    be well
