HT4623 iPhone needs to be restored from sync. can I disconnect and finish later?

My iPhone needs to be restored from sync. can I disconnect and finish later? Apparently something didn't work and I haven't yet found the answer. Afraid my iPhone has been wiped.

Sadly, there isn't. Some of your phone's items may be stored in the backup file the phone makes during sync. Unfortunently, should those items not be in the back up file they are gone for good.
