I'm 'upgrading' to iOS 5.1, and the download seems to have gone fine. But iTunes has been stuck on "Verifying Updated iPhone Software" for about 4 hours. How do I fix this?

I have the exact same issue on my iPhone 4S and I am now restoring, hopefully successfully and without losing everything. I sure hope iCloud actually works for all of my apps!!!

How many times did you try the reset? Sometimes, it can take more than one reset, especially with these kinds of issues. Try multiple times. Note that you need to hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen. This can sometimes take 15-30 seconds.
Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

You need to use Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off your device
2. Press the Home button and while holding it, connect your device to the computer
3. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the "Connect to iTunes screen"
4. Release the Home button and open iTunes on your computer
5. You will see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode". Use iTunes to recover your device.
You may need to repeat these steps several times.

I was prompted to update my iPhone 3G to i0s6 - so I tried - it has been installing for ages and stuck on the message "verifying update". How can I fix this?

iOS 6 is not compatible with an iPhone 3g.....just 3gs and higher. If you have a 3gs phone, I'd be patient. Using past experience as a guide, the update servers get hammered at times like this.

Stuck in Verifying update for over 30 minutes.

Did the system update and now it is stuck in the verifying update for over 30 minutes. Have done updates before and this has never happened.
What to do next. This is the only form of communication that I have in my home.

That error is usually a hardware error. Make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and have it checked.

8.3 Update is stuck at "Verifying update with apple

Yesterday I updated my ipad 2 too ISO 8.3, everything seemed to be going as normal with updates but for the past 24hrs the screen has been saying 'Verifying update' with the circular timer symbol going around.
Behind the Verifying Update logo i am still getting notifications but because it is still Verifying update you cannot do anything with ipad.
Any ideas as as the minute it is a very expensive paper weight!!

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again. Also, read this.

I have this same issue, and have had it before. When the last update was released my phone became a paperweight and discovered it was my PC. I have no issues syncing and backing up on this PC, it's only when I have to update the firmware or restore it. For some reason the USB port cuts out midway through the update and the phone gets stuck in the "connect to itunes" screen and will not restore. When I hook it up to my work PC, no problems. Except that the phone will not except any backup files I have on my work PC. So basically I have to start fresh, whick blows!!!!
Like an idiot, I forgot about my past experience and updated last night, same story. Came into work today and restored it. I synced the iphone with my work PC on Friday and of course it's showing no back up file, my last one is from September and it doesn't work.
Bottom line, try another PC/MAC and u should be good, but don't expect it to restore.
Does anyone know if I can copy my backup file from my home PC, put it on my work PC, and attempt to restore it??? HELP!!!!!!

I just attempted to update to 2.2.1 and everything was going well until it tried to verify the software. It sat there doing that for over an hour. I have deleted and reinstalled itunes and tried to restore the phone. It is still stock on trying to verify. HELP!!! What do I do now??

Remember where you saved it. Do not open it.
Hold the SHIFT key while clicking the "Update" or "Restore" button in the iPhone tab in iTunes
On Mac:
Hold the option key while clicking the "Update" or "Restore" button in the iPhone tab in iTunes
Subsequently, a dialog box will come up which will allow you to select the firmware file to use for your update. At this point, simply browse to and select the firmware file that you downloaded.

I have no update setting on my iphone3g. i received an ipad for Xmas. Need to update phone to ios5 to use icloud. Can and how do I do this? I'm a senior trying to figure this stuff out. I admit, I'm out of my realm. Any easy tutorials?

Iphone 3g can only go as high as 4.2.1, if you are on 3.0.1, then connect to itunes and click on check for updates, then update. To go any higher than ios 4.2.1 you will have to get a newer phone.
And if your wanting to use icloud on your phone to sync with your ipad, then again, you will have to buy at least an iphone 4 or above to get ios 5.0.

IPhone stuck during software update, in airplane mode

HINT:
Make sure you are not in airplane mode when performing an iPhone software update. If you do, then you will get an iTunes alert saying ...
"The iPhone "(name of iPhone)" cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your iPhone and that it is not PIN-locked."
To get out of airplane mode: slide the emergency call slide, punch in any number, hit CALL, an alert will pop up asking you to turn off airplane mode, .....
NOTE:
Apple could eliminate this problem by (1) blocking all incoming calls during syncs and updates and (2) checking to see if the phone is in airplane mode before allowing an update to occur.

Connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to respond. Usually takes about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. If still problems, try DFU Mode Restore. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power button, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time.

I tried to update my ipad 3 days ago, It is stuck on verify updates and will not let me get pass that message. Help!!!

Try a reset and see what happens.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Your iPad may go into recovery mode which means that you will have to restore the device, so take a look at this in case you find yourself in that situation.
