HT4623 Is it possible for my iPod touch to be too old to update?
I have an iPod touch, it is pretty old. I want to update it so I can get the benefits of it.

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. Is it possible for a iPod touch to get a virus when downloading free games off the internet? If yes, is there an antivirus program to protect the ipod. and can some of the current apps be saved from the virus damage?
I had one game permanently just stop working, it usually does crash, but that last time it just went bad, I don't know the reason, I tried powering off iPod, relaunching game, but the game never worked again. I think it corrupted its own save file or some of its own data.
Have you tried another game or app, do those work? If they do, then I guess you know where the problem lies, but if they all stop working, then what about apps, can apps launch?
Lastly, apps from the app store are checked by Apple, so they are clean. -
IPod touch 4 has gotten stuck while updating/restoring.
Today I got a message that there was a new iTunes, so I updated it.
Then I got a message that there was a new update for my iPod Touch 4th Gen. So I updated it. ...or tried to. During the "restore" phase the process stops at about 25% (as seen on the progress indicator on the iPod) and won't progress further.
I've tried:
switching users
changing USB ports
restarting computer
forcing restore with power and home buttons
I am at my wit's end...it's my kid's iPod and he's crying (it's ok, he's 7) and I'm frantic and nothing I'm doing is helping.
any ideas?Hang during restore process: Following Troubleshooting security software will frequently resolve this error. This error can be caused by the default packet size being set incorrectly. There may be third-party software installed that modifies the default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize or MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entry into the Registry. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance in adjusting this TcpWindowSize values. Typically the default packet size is modified by 3G cellular network card software, ISP communication software, or Internet speed download optimization software. There are legitimate reasons to change the TCP/IP packet size and not use the Windows default settings (for example, network traffic optimization, home/broadband optimization, enterprise app optimization such as database apps, Exchange, and more). Deleting the "TcpWindowSize" or "GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize" entries in Windows Registry could affect the system's performance with other apps or on their network connections. Deleting the customized TCP/IP settings may require the reinstallation of any third-party applications that had modified the TCP/IP settings from the Windows default settings.
There are two ways to resolve this:
You can follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , or follow the steps below to manually find and remove TcpWindowSize and MaxGlobalTcpWindowSize entries from the Registry.
For Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7: Go to the C:\\Windows folder and launch regedit.
Go to Edit > Find.
Search for "TcpWindowSize" entries. There are typically multiple entries of TcpWindowSize/GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize spread throughout the entire Registry. If "TcpWindowSize" exists, one or more third-party applications have changed the user's default Windows settings for TCP/IP.
Go to File and select Export. This step will export a copy of the Registry that can be used as a backup of the original settings.
Delete the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
Search for the next "TcpWindowSize" entry and delete each one until the Registry no longer has any "TcpWindowSize" entries.
Close Regedit, restart the PC, and test.
If you are uncertain as to why these registry entries exist and the PC is a business computer, contact your network administrator and determine what values TCP/IP can be set in their Windows Registry setting so that the PC can update or restore an iOS device rather than deleting the "TcpWindowSize" entry.
If editing the registry does not resolve the issue, restoring on a different computer that did not install the communication software is the step most likely to resolve this issue.

mida614Only if you have an iPod 5. iOS 7 requires 512MB of RAM, and sadly only the iPod 5 has 512MB of RAM. If you have a iPod 4 or earlier iOS 7 is not an option. If you check your iPod and it states your iPod iOS is current then you are at your max. Hope this helps, Good luck.

thanksIt looks like you have a 1G iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3, which is the latest version of iOS that is compatible with that model. If if it's actually a 2G iPod Touch, you should be able to update it to iOS 4.2.1 at most.
Either way though, if the App requires a high version of iOS than what is possible on your iPod Touch, then I'm afraid you are out of luck.

Well, it isn't even possible to have a data plan for the iPod Touch. You can just use wifi to use FaceTime.

You normally need to provide some sort of payment method (in part as proof of residence in the country) before you can get even the free apps. It is possible to set up a new iTunes Store account just for free apps, but you have to create a new Apple ID; you cannot use an existing one. If you want to do that, take a look here:

Read the steps carefully as the order in which you follow them is critical. Note again that you can do this only when creating a new Apple ID. You cannot use an existing ID.
You will of course not be able to get anything other than the free content without entering in some sort of payment method (credit card, prepaid iTunes card, gift certificate, etc.)

Manual download for purchased ipod touch firmware update?
I'm in the Army National Guard, and I deployed a couple of months ago. My internet connection is extremely slow, and typically cuts out for at least a few minutes every hour. I purchased a firmware update for my ipod touch, but the update times out every single time I attempt to download it within iTunes.
Is there any way to get a link to manually download the update? I have a download manager on my computer that can handle the slow link and frequent loss of internet.Thanks for the response. I now have a slightly more serious problem, though, which I doubt can be helped, but I figure I may as well ask anyway. Here goes:
I was looking for a program to extract my music off the ipod to make a backup as you suggest. (Back before I had an iPod touch, I used yamipod, but that doesn't have touch / iPhone support.)
One that looked promising was called Sharepod, so I downloaded it, and launched it. It told me that I shouldn't run both iTunes and sharepod simultaneously, so I closed iTunes. Then it told me that it didn't detect any iPod, so I should re-open iTunes with the iPod connected, then restart Sharepod.
When I opened iTunes back up, it told me that it couldn't read the data on the iPod, and that I should do a factory reset to fix the problem. (This of course will erase the data.)
So now I'm pretty much stuck. I can't get iTunes to read my iPod, and as long as it can't, neither can sharepod. The only way I can get iTunes to see the iPod is to wipe the data, which is what I downloaded sharepod to prevent in the first place. In the meantime, the iPod works just fine, I just can't sync/update it until I wipe it, which I would like to avoid. Do you know of any way I could possibly fix this error without losing my data? I've rebooted both the iPod and the computer, and even re-installed iTunes, but no luck.

These instructions are for changing the language for the Ipod Touch, but they don't change the language for the App store and the Reminders Application.
I think these two might be driven by the IP address of your location. In my case, I am in Spain and have my Ipod Touch set to English, but for the App store and Reminders, it appears in Spanish.
I would like to be able to change them to English if possible. I don't see any options within those applications to make this change.
Does anyone know how to make these changes?

I am trying to get minecraft for my iPod touch. When I put in my apple ID it says that I have to verify that I can buy it. I click ok I pulls up a site ask me for my apple ID and then I put in my security questions. After that it ask me some weird question like Who Is your favorite teacher and another question like what is your least favorite car model. I did not set those as my secure questions. I can not dowload the new updated software for my Ipod touch 4G. When i do I get an error message that says Network connection has timed out. I have done the trouble shooting steps. Downloaded the latest version of Itunes, and checked network connection
